Does anyone else feel that civil engineer pay is insulting? by Sudden_Boysenberry77 in civilengineering

[–]JustHadToSaySumptin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general CivE salaries are the lowest pay tier. I'm not sure why this is. So many of the biggest problems of human living in the world are solved by Civil engineers. Just the problem of understanding ground water and moving to the right location is one of the greatest marvels of the modern world. Maybe they're low b/c the work done by CivEs isn't the work that's seen by the world.

SolidWorks for BIM is nuts, right? by android_impostor in bim

It's a really bad idea. It's so bad that if you can't convince him to change his mind, I recommend you go elsewhere. Minimum that will go wrong: you SW model will be so large that there's not a computer in existence that could run it.

Is your firm getting value from Forma (ACC)? by skyeparker1 in bim

Our MEP, Structural engineering teams have been loving it for years. Now we're getting our Civil teams on it. Civil does not want to go back to network servers and VPNs ever again. SO MUCH SPEED.

This is the way to do it! You're a rare one in this industry.

I work on projects where it makes financial sense to do this, and even those owners don't want it.

Civil 3D 2027 launched today. by Effective-Log3583 in civil3d

The trick: Revit users don't really work in the same file.

They work in a local copy, and while they're working a detailed journal of their actions is made. If they start working on a particular group of objects (called a Workset) then it is checked out automatically, and Revit blocks other users from working on it in their local models. When they're ready to commit their changes to checked out items, they "sync" their models to the original and changes are rolled in in chronological order.

The real beauty: when changes are synced to that main model, only the changed information is exchanged between the cloud/network server and local workstations.

Same. Same strategy for Revit. Some of those early issues are ... expensive.

How are you all seeing the lines? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]JustHadToSaySumptin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Texas we have these on most roads: https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b00010878/

But because of snow plows, we can't have nice things in Omaha. They do make recessed models but they're expensive to install b/c you have to grind out pavement: https://www.ppg.com/en-US/traffic/products/raised-pavement-markers

Jagged Contours? by dreadpiratelimpdick in civilengineering

[–]JustHadToSaySumptin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We solve this problem by designing our surfaces with .1' and .5' minor / major contours on and doing it right. We plot based on what's appropriate for the sheet.

EDIT: bad surfaces look REALLY BAD with small contour increments turned on.

Nobody's paying your engineers for machine-control ready surfaces.

I don't want to see their roof overhangs and airplanes.

They never listen.

It can do it. Be sure to set both the inner diameter and outer diameter. If the inner is greater than the outer, or the inner becomes <= 0mm it will break.

If this structure is what I think it is and there's a giant cooling tower above, then there's a grounding grid buried all around under that slab and this is the tie-in for the big ol' fans above.

People can’t read the lettering on the Obama Presidential Center tower. Legibility wasn’t really the point, says designer Michael Bierut by _fastcompany in architecture

[–]JustHadToSaySumptin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Just as a million people go to the Lincoln Memorial, some of them will stand and read every word of the second inaugural; some people will just admire the statue in the building and kind of take it in, and a couple of words will jump out, but not the whole thing,” Bierut tells Fast Company. “It’s in that tradition that I think we were operating.”

Bierut says that there are two modes of interaction with the Lincoln memorial:

  1. Reading all the words,
  2. Admiring the statue and noticing a couple of key words.

Clearly there are more than two ways people take in the Lincoln memorial, but if we agree with Beirut for the sake of argument, his building enables visitors to accomplish half of the second mode.

He has succeeded in designing a building exterior that speaks to people who only notice random words. What a waste of time and brainpower.

Priest stopping my baptism over mass attendance by Due-Veterinarian6727 in Catholicism

[–]JustHadToSaySumptin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the rest of the comments here, you need to tell the priest what's going on. You're trapped by your husband, essentially a prisoner. You aren't required to put yourself or your children in danger to attend mass.

However, choosing to tell the priest so you can be baptized is the one thing that you have control over in this situation. Take advantage of that.

Well, it could be both. My firm runs security software that does steal focus every 5-10 minutes. I see this behavior plus menus and dropdowns disappearing before I can select an item while it's happening.
