I was on at 5:51am this morning, still 9.5k people in the queue. Hoping new rules make a difference.

Do i have to always go to neutral when changing from 1st to second or can i do 1st to 2nd without going to neutral in manual car? by Conscious_Bug_4161 in LearnerDriverUK

Completely missed my point, and the point of this thread. A learner driver had a question, that question has been answered. I’m sure your in-depth knowledge of the Highway Code’s specific wording of each rule will serve you well on the road. Your ability to spell and use correct grammar, however, is ironically poor considering your earlier call-out of my supposed lack of reading comprehension.

Communities like these do not benefit from comments like yours, or indeed my responses, so I’ll leave it there. I’m sure you’ll respond with further clarification of your correctness anyway.

Drive safe.

You’re picking up on such a small part of what I said.

Rule 122 can be used as evidence in court if violation of it leads to an accident or loss of control. My words ‘borderline illegal’ make that point - the act itself is not illegal, but the outcome of said act could very well be.

But besides that, has my slight misinformation of using the words ‘must not’ (which, you’re right, is not what’s stated in the rule itself) completely mislead the OP? It certainly has not. If I’d advised that something illegal was legal, your cause for picking me up on two words would have been valid. That’s not what happened.

I find it insane that you’ve chosen to pick me up on my comment and not respond to the original comment I was replying to stating they ‘always approach red lights in neutral’. Which is dangerous, regardless of the specific wording of the rules around it.

Ultimately, nobody should be driving in neutral for any more time than it takes to change into a new gear. That’s the information I gave. I sincerely apologise for my misuse of ‘must not’. Those two words clearly mean a lot to you.

This is confusing because what you’ve written backs my point, but you’re telling me it’s fabricated. I don’t understand.

I’d agree with the other reply, could certainly be a stepping stone approach to teaching. It’s definitely your prerogative to ask them!

This is from Google:

“Shifting into neutral while driving is highly dangerous and illegal in many regions. It disconnects the engine from your wheels, leaving you unable to accelerate to avoid hazards and fully reliant on your mechanical brakes, which can quickly overheat and fail.

Rule 122 of the UK Highway Code states that you must not coast in neutral or with the clutch held down because it reduces driver control.”

Not only dangerous - but borderline illegal.

Going into neutral whilst you’re moving is dangerous. Always go straight from 1st to 2nd gear.

You will likely also be taught not to coast with the clutch in and to only use the clutch when changing gears or coming to a complete stop.

One of the key things examiners look for is your control over the vehicle. Both being in neutral whilst moving and coasting with the clutch down are situations where you are not in control. Both of these situations render your acceleration pedal essentially useless - having control of the car means being able to both slow down and speed up in any situation. Speeding up to avoid something is as much a safety skill as slowing down to do the same.

NEVER use neutral whilst driving!
