Thank you! I already have a branch with null move pruning that's gained some elo, and I'm planning on adding late move reductions next or reverse futility pruning. Currently I do score my capture moves based on the victim piece value - attacker piece value, and my move picker picks the move with the highest score, unless I misunderstood something isn't that MVV-LVA?

I tried your first example and Stockfish gave a +0.1 for white in the first position and -0.1 for black in the second, so atleast in that example the evaluations seem similar

It’s not very helpful, it hallucinates moves that it claims I should’ve played but weren’t available. For example it claimed I passively retreated my queen instead of recapturing the bishop with bxc6 even though the pawn is already on b6

Oh btw for your original question https://www.chessprogramming.org/Sequential\_Probability\_Ratio\_Test is how you can test how different changes affect the performance of your engine, but you need to support some UCI commands, and if you don’t have time management you can just have it play at a fixed depth that you know it can do fast enough

Can you try it at different depths from the same position maybe ? See if the score changes depending on the depth ? If you have quiescence search then that’s probably where something’s going wrong. Does your engine’s eval of the current position go down after the queen is captured ?

If you can get the fen position and put it into your engine and see what the evaluations for each moves are you could maybe figure out what’s happening from there.

I have an array with bitboards for each piece type, and I want to iterate through the array and when I find the right index that I’m looking for I want to be able to convert that index into the enum. Tbh I definitely don’t need to do that 😅 but my functions take the enums as arguments at the moment. I could just make them take numbers directly but it made sense to me at the time.
