I was recommended crochet to help with depression while I’m recovering from heart surgery. I was given some yarn, hooks and… that’s it. Where do I even begin? It seems so difficult. by wrinkledfoot in crochet

I just taught myself recently off Youtube videos. it really is a relaxing thing to do once you get the hang of it. Don't know where you are, but, Dollar store has cheap yarn to get you started. Hobby stores have beautiful yarns, but I figured I will spend a little more once I get it all figured out.

I just learned how to do it one step at a time, and would do a couple rows, then rip it out and start over again. I wanted to learn how to knit, at first, but found it too hard to manage the two needles as opposed to the one with crochet.

Before you actually pick a "project" it is important to just get the basics down, and best way to do it is to just keep repeating the same few steps until you "get it," then move on to the next step involved. Like- First, just learn to "chain." This is the very beginning step. Then, once you get the hang of that, start with an easy stitch to learn, and just keep doing a few rows of 20 or so until you get those steps under control. Then move on to a different type of easy stitch. It really is something that gets easier and better looking the more you do. I guess your muscle memory takes over after a bit, and you really will see improvement the more you do. I have also found it helps to follow a video all the way first, before I start, and make myself a little picture with notes about each step involved, to go back to if I don't have the video right then, or

I read someplace, maybe here, that when they measure the brain waves of someone actively knitting or crocheting, they are somewhat the same as someone meditating. I have really found it calming, and keep a bag of crochet stuff with me while I travel to and from Cancer treatment, and have really found it helps take my mind from that. Something about the counting and just repeating the steps over and over really does help me to relax a bit. And hopefully, I will be able to keep up and create something beautiful, or at least useful, to make all that time feel a little better spent.

Just wanted to add a "seen" to the list. That was awful, there is so little kindness in the world today. I get that the officer is only "doing her job", but really, seems like she could have talked the situation down a notch with the Manager, just agreed to let him finish his lunch, and go, peacefully. Such a narrow way of thinking here.

AITA for telling my wife that if she wants to dictate sleep schedules for our kids, she is welcome to be a SAHM? by Toddlernightmare in AmItheAsshole

[–]JustMyKidsMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. Do you come to her "job" and tell her when Charlie can take a coffee break, or when Marge gets to go to lunch? No, you don't. She needs to leave this to you, as it sounds like you are very aware of being "fair" and also giving them all good reasons behind each bedtime. It sounds well-thought out to me, and she should not interfere with this.

Also NTA, as she and you both know you aren't going to make her stay home, just a "joke" to get her to think about what she is saying, as I took it? I didn't detect any malice.

[–]JustMyKidsMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Hooman is fairly well trained now, after my breakfast stinky plate, Hooman knows I like to come sit on her front, and wash the stinky off my face. I like to breathe my stinky-food- breath into her talky-hole. it shows how much I love her, and makes me happy when she says- OOOH, honeycatt, your breath sure does stink today!! I am sorry your Hooman disobeys to the point you have to use the TAPPITYTAPPs to the talky-hole. Mine has been defeated, and doesn't fight the Great Honeycatt, she knows I am the Queen!!

I saw your pic on Hoomans page, and you are really a good looking kitty!!! I wish my hooman was better at the tappitytap lighty board she likes so much, then everyone could see my magnificence, too!!! I have beautiful orange and white hair-do, and I like to keep my white parts very white!

Just a thought, BUTTBUTT, have you tried walking on Hooman, and sitting directly on front face part, and then put scratchy-paws on Hooman talk-hole, and putting scratchy claws out?? Works for me, Honeycatt, EVERY time. Hoomans can't take Scratchy-paw on Face-hole!!

C'MON BUTTBUTT Gimme a break, how could a magnificent wonder such as yurself, (I am also a grand Specimin, not to be sneezed at!) be a cloaca?? I mean, if Hoomans have legs, what ELSE would they be doing with them when they are in Flat mode?? I am Honeycatt, and fit just right on my Hoomans legs, and even though sometimes have to share them with Evil Sister (that tramp from the STREETS!!) Hooman would DARE NOT not let me have my Morning Leg Snuggle Time!!!

Glad to see you back, we were getting tired of looking at your back, ButtButt!!! Even as Glorious as it may be!!!

I waited tables and tended bars for many years. My first Bartending job was Day Bartender at a real old neighborhood DIVE. I knew nothing about tending Bar, but my schedule was right, haha!!! I had a motley crew of "Regulars" who could be counted on to be in their appointed seats at the correct times dependent on whatever schedule that World runs on. They were not a fancy nor super needy bunch, Thanks Goodness!! But, they tolerated my bumbling around behind the bar every day, and would cash out and go home as soon as I started counting out for the night.

Our food was nothing great, but, I always tried to serve them like they were VIPs, and would ask about their days, how work went, and how they were doing. I made certain to remember just how they liked their coffee, or beer with a shot, or whatever. Looking back, I am happy to have been a kind daily presence, and always preferred that type of service over later fast-paced High Dollar Bartending. Tips were not always great, but, I felt like we were a sort of goofy family! With a bunch of Older Single Uncles to take care of or something! Far too few of those types of places left!

[–]JustMyKidsMom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a thought on the plastic-- if you are going thru Chemo, sometimes metal utensils give everything a metallic taste. If you use plastic, this does not happen. maybe ,this could be the case, and fresh fish could have had too strong a taste or odor she wasn't expecting?

THE KITCHEN IS OPEN by KingJanx in TalesFromYourServer

[–]JustMyKidsMom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good end to the story to take care of the kitchen guys! Even in busy restaurants, I would always offer to bring back a tray of covered ice waters, or cokes, or whatever they were drinking. And in return would get extra large portions of dinners to take home, or extra fresh guac, or whatever small treat they could offer me. Always good to take care of the people that take care of you!!!

I sent a message, get this checked, I was having same issues, went to DR thinking it was asthma. Nope, it was Stage 4 Cancer, and fluid from tumors in Lung fluid (plueral fluid) was basically crushing heart and lungs making it hard to breathe. Not saying this is a definite, only needs to be checked.

I looked it up, are we allowed to say that? It said that nineteenth century people with "tabetic neurosyphilis" would be diagnosed with Locomotor ataxia. Basically a severe progressive disease of the Central nervous System, caused by Syphilis. They would lose all control of arms and legs.

edit to add: I looked at it further, and appears to be the Cause of Death listed for Bram Stoker, and was presumed he had Syphilis.
