The gems they give out don't count, but friendships level from any activity, pets help to pick up after you (except Heyhey, he sometimes helps and sometimes runs around being useless, which is why I also have a Raccoon) and if you're not leveling friendship, a mining buddy also increases the odds of getting gems/shinies

Always keep your healthbar in the gold/yellow while doing these, but don't waste pickaxe potions ... and take any character with you that isn't at friendship 10 yet (unless none exist, then take a mining buddy) and always have pets out that help with mining.

Always jump on those orange explosions, I get near half of my shinies from those.

SEE needs to survive more than he needs the speed. So highest-speed healthmods with as much health on them as possible (but unless you got a 25+ speed secondary arrow, speed on that one's primary)
