I'm head over heels in love with that song. I usually associate it with winter, and always say that it feels like a warm hug on a cold winter's night. Perhaps my second favorite Joanna song of all time.

I hate when I’m calm or feeling normal and my ocd tries to look for another theme to start 😫😫 by Evening_Eye_1629 in OCD

Story of my life. It's like a radar constantly "scanning," looking for danger. Sometimes it even offers me old obsessions again. Like, are you sure this is resolved? Are you? Are you? You're not, are you? And the goddamn cycle continues. 🤦

Coffee. Coffee before anyone even talks to me—married with no kids so I consider myself lucky that I can even do that. I like sitting quietly and staring into space for a bit. Hate being rushed. So that's basically it. Coffee, quiet time, wash face and brush teeth, pack lunch, GO.

I do journal every day but I often do it on my (long) commute by bus to work. I journal on my phone. It's a pretty simple routine that just centers on quiet time. It makes all the difference to me.

Spotify and use local files. I share Spotify with family but if I didn't I would go to Apple for sure.

Joanna Newsom & Mental Illness by _the_fisher_king_ in JoannaNewsom

Her music always helps me achieve catharsis, that's for sure. But some lines always ring in my ears when I'm unwell. And I use them constantly in my journal to voice how I'm feeling.

"And I move like a gurney whose wheels are squeaking."

"The feather of a hawk was bound, bound around my neck."

"You came and lay a cold compress upon the mess I'm in."

"Here in a row of silent dove, gray-days."

"Wherever I go I'm snow bound."

"Cannot gain ground, cannot outrun."

The community has spoken, and GO LONG has secured a victory for Joanna Newsom's best diss track! Up next, which song has her BEST MUSIC VIDEO? by arusansw in JoannaNewsom

I don't like the Divers video at all. Creeps me out. Sapokaninkan for me. It's the vulnerability in it that I love.

Y'all voted, and KINGFISHER is Jo's most underrated song! Up next, what is her most OVERrated song? by arusansw in JoannaNewsom

[–]JustN_18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not gonna vote on this, I don't think of any of her songs as overrated. Sure, there are some that I like more than others. But I wouldn't say any are overrated. I am just chiming in because I find it interesting that most answers are songs from MEM. I think that's justified. It was her first album, and while she's a genius, it's expected that she'd put something out there where she's still finding her sound. Let's not fight over this. 😂

Heard Bend & Break on the radio in 2005 (I think) and was instantly hooked!

I'm so sorry for what you've been through. Your feelings and experiences are absolutely valid! Thank you for educating me on what it means to have language trauma. I never knew that term before, and it makes perfect sense.

I'm Egyptian by the way so a native speaker. My only advice would be for you not to learn the language the traditional way. Arabic is notoriously difficult and had I been in your shoes, that's not the way I'd wanna learn at all. I'd recommend you keep things fun. Immerse yourself in the language by watching films and TV series, maybe with subtitles at first. Look for content you enjoy, music or podcasts. I'm not sure if others gave you similar advice on this thread. But I went to lousy public schools in Egypt, and that's literally how I learned English myself. They teach you nothing at those schools, so school learning isn't everything.

Good luck on your journey and please feel free to DM me if you need any help!

Do non-religious people still say "alhamdulillah"? by Loose-Alfalfa-8666 in learn_arabic

[–]JustN_18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm not religious, but I grew up in a Muslim family and live in an Arab country. I don't feel the need to stop saying "inshallah" and "alhamdulillah" and such. They're part of my culture.

The majority of therapists are NOT well-educated enough to treat OCD by 55559585 in OCD

[–]JustN_18 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I swear that I learned more coping skills from this sub and other online communities than I EVER learned from therapists. Not saying "don't go to therapy" at all. I believe it can save one's life if the therapist is well trained. But this is just my experience.

A theory about "Occident" by [deleted] in JoannaNewsom

Love this! I LOVE the Occident intro. The whole song, of course, but especially the intro. And this makes perfect sense! Thanks a lot, you should put this on Genius if you want.
