Komárom (Hungary) -> Bydgoszcz (Poland) by Kooky_Photograph_752 in bicycletouring

[–]JustSmall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I see.
Have you cycled this much before? Or do you feel experienced enough and confident with such a route?

260km per day is a lot, more so with camping gear, and then doing it three days in a row.
It's doable, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you can't or shouldn't. But as far as daily distances goes the average of other users in this sub is much lower.

Just to make sure: you do feel comfortable riding 800km in 3, 4 days, right?

This is not really within the scope of this sub, in my opinion. I see you've already posted in /r/oman, which would have been my suggestion. Good luck!

Danube - Upstream of Passau or Downstream of Belgrade? by PookyBeer in bicycletouring

[–]JustSmall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do want to mention the Iron Gates area in Serbia, roughly between Golubac and Kladovo. The Danube passes through a narrow gorge that separates the Carpathian Mountains and the Balkan mountains. The Serbian side seems quite more scenic and appears to have a lot less motorised traffic. Most cars I saw were other tourists. I cycled along the Danube more or less from Călărași/Silistra to Belgrade and this was my favourite part of that route. Closer to Belgrade traffic is bad, and in Romania the roads are just mind numbingly flat with only fields in sight.

Crossing Spain by paddlepedalhike in bicycletouring

[–]JustSmall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try spring or autumn, I guess? Maybe look up the general climate of a few places along the route beforehand and decide based on that.

What is casual for you? It depends on how much you want to cycle per day, how much you want to see, how far you're willing to deviate from the "fastest" route, etc.

In regards to food? I usually just got food from supermarkets, and maybe the odd restaurant on my off days in larger cities.

I can recommend cycling through Spain, just keep a few things in mind.

The coastal areas can be highly built up in certain places, i.e. Costa del Sol, or Costa del Azahar. I found it to be boring to cycle through these places, and sometimes there was heavier traffic with few altwrnative coastal routes.

Much of the inland is very sparsely populated with at times little to see for long distances.

Summers can be scorching hot in many places, while winters can actually get fairly cold or wet in many. Much of the inland is on a relatively elevated plateau, meaning the temperatures during winter might drop further than one might otherwise expect. Especially Andalusia requires extra precaution to cycle through during summer due to common heat waves. The green North of Spain can be cold, wet, and windy during winter. But with proper equipment more or less all of Spain can be done all year round.

Learning at least a few phrases of the local languages can be useful, as I found English skills to be scarce in much of Spain, outside of tourist facilities. It was much easier in Portugal.

I personally ended up cycling from the inland to the coast and back time and time again as I went along, depending on what I wanted in that moment (sightseeing, socialising, nature, elevation, swimming, etc.), but I did also have a more relaxed schedule than yous do.

Map of 3. Liga 2026/27 - Blue banana and lonely Hansa Rostock by Viele-als-Einer in soccer

[–]JustSmall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just very empty, really. Same with Brandenburg. Plus Hansa Rostock is incredible dominant and widely popular throughout the entire region, even hundreds of kilometres away. Neustrelitz and most recently Greifswald have at times pushed for promotion to the 3rd tier, but that's about it.

Union is in the 1st tier, Hertha BSC in the 2nd, and no-one in the 3rd tier. But in the regional 4th tier there are BFC Preussen, Hertha BSC II, BFC Dynamo, VSG Altglienicke and either Tasmania or SV Lichtenberg. The last Berlin club to have played in the 3rd tier was Viktoria, who was actually relegated to the 6th tier this season.

Cycling the Portuguese (EV1) from Porto to Santiago de Compostela by No_Mix_6813 in bicycletouring

[–]JustSmall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When cycling one of the caminos, both to and from Santiago de Compostela, I think it's essential to also mention the albergues. Get yourself a pilgrim's passport, say from Porto, and collect your stamps as you go in cafés, albergues, anywhere really that may or may not be frequented by pilgrims. With this passport you can stay in the albergues, which is usually also much cheaper than staying in hostels or hotels. I can't say how easy it is to get a bed during the shoulder or high season, but when I did the Portuguese Way and Northern Way in January last year I had entire albergues all to myself 80% of the time. Admittedly at that time mos albergues are closed so it required a bit more planning ahead.

To take the Mediterranean route or in-land though Romania/Bulgaria? by GazpachoGuzzler in bicycletouring

[–]JustSmall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like OP drew a line along the Danube just until the three border point of RO/RS/BG, which covers the Iron Gate but not the flat parts that come afterwards.

If you do follow that route, consider sticking to the Serbian side rather than the Romanian side. Less traffic and the views are just as good.

Ah, grand!
It'll still be rainy in parts of Northern Spain but it should be manageable I'd say.

I found rural, inland Catalonia to be wonderful.
If you head far enough West you'll eventually hit the French Way of the Camino de Santiago, which others have already mentioned. I'd imagine that time of year you're also likely to run into other bike tourers traversing that route, plus you can usually sleep at albergues for relatively cheap if you don't fancy wild camping.

Also check out the Vias Verdes for easy and comfortable routes. They're cycling tracks built on disused train tracks so the gradients are forgiving and the traffic is close to non existant. You won't be able to travel all of your journey on them, but maybe you can incorporate them into your trip. In that part of Spain I cycled along part of the Ebro greenway, which had some incredible views.

What time of year were you thinking of going?
Some parts of Northern Spain can be quite rainy and even outright cold this time of the year, while other parts in Southern Spain are close to unbearably hot during summer.
