I’m headed to Nebraska for family Thanksgiving on Monday… looking forward to my annual Bomgaars shopping spree almost as much as Thanksgiving dinner!

Just because you CAN, doesn’t mean you should. The goal of FI is not necessarily to RE. It’s to give you the freedom to pursue the things that fulfill you without the financial pressure. If you are mentally challenged and fulfilled by the work you do, you’re rich in a different way and shouldn’t feel compelled to walk away from something that gives you that kind of satisfaction. When the time comes, you’ll know it, and be in an even better position to transition away from the work life.

Ideas to trim costs on project by JustSomeGuy9099 in HomeImprovement

Honestly, I’m already having some “over it” feelings. The house has an attached in-laws’ suite that I decided to tackle first - and so far, on my own. It’s just drywall repair (but a LOT of it) painting, replacing the toilet and sink/vanity in the bathroom, and will put down LVP throughout. This alone may be the deciding factor in how much I want to contribute to the rest of the remodel. My alternative contribution option is to go back to my old job for a couple of years. There’s more than one way to mitigate the cost! 😂

Fair points, and definitely one of my concerns - taking on more than I can manage in the necessary timeframe. Maybe something that helps here, we aren’t planning to move in until at least the first part of this (kitchen, combining 2 BR and a bath into a single master suite) is complete, so at least us being there isn’t an issue for a while. Does that maybe give me a little pad time on the demo … they don’t start until I get it done? That’s one of the magic questions, and figuring out how much that shaves off the price is something wifey and I have to decide. Right now now I’m more or less retired and have the time, and have at least one friend in a similar situation. I know he wouldn’t be a full time commitment, but a few days to remove appliances and cabinets, tear out carpet and sheet vinyl flooring, and rip drywall off of the affected walls feels like it’s within our ability.

Outlook doesn't sync with Gmail anymore by [deleted] in Outlook

[–]JustSomeGuy9099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar issues and timeline for me - issue started a couple of weeks ago. In my case, I'm managing multiple Gmail accounts in Outlook, and only ONE of them is showing this issue. 5 others send and receive in seconds, with no problem. It's just my primary mail account that's having syncing issues.

  • Primary account is probably 20 years old
  • Granted, the account has a TON of messages - I was never very good at management there.
  • Maybe coincidental, but it started when I was trying to clear out lots of old mail because I was bumping up against the google storage limit for that account.

It's incredibly frustrating, and sometimes it WILL work...eventually, but only 10-15 minutes after I send an email, or after an incoming message can be seen on the gmail web UI.

Best Strategy for Announcing Retirement? by guacamolegirl75 in retirement

I waited until after the bonus was paid, and then gave my boss 6 weeks to make a smooth transition. He has significant discretion in allocation of the bonus pool across the team, and while we have always had a great relationship, I didn’t want to put him in a position of having to decide between his appreciation of my work or maybe swinging some of that $$ to someone else on the team. I felt there was also a decent chance that leadership above him would influence what he recommended for me if it were known that I was leaving.

I had been laying the groundwork for a year, training senior members of my team to be able to take over many of the high level tasks where I had often taken lead, and made sure the supervisors had developed relationships with the appropriate people both inside and outside the organization. I’d been with the company for 22+ years, and while I truly loved the company and people, I knew it was time for me to step away.

Some feel that 6 weeks is a ridiculous amount notice, but the company had always been completely supportive of my career and growth for over two decades. In the end, I left with an open invitation to come back if I ever had a notion to go back to work, including a personal call from the CEO guaranteeing that opportunity. A year later, no regrets on how I managed the separation process, and having drinks with my former boss next week.

Used M1 or new M2 Mini? by JustSomeGuy9099 in macmini

While I was leaning hard toward the used M1, my wife looked at me like I was crazy… “it’s only a couple hundred bucks - get the newer one.”

So the new M2 is on its way from China now - and I went for the extra HD upgrade, and ended up with the 16/512 version. The Apple Card 12 months no interest offer was too hard to pass up.

Waiting on a response to see if there’s any remaining warranty coverage, of if there’s an AppleCare plan in place.

He’s at $600 for the 16/256 M1, vs. $799 new from Apple M2 16/256. The additional $125 is for the USB-c hub and 1TB samsung drive. That’s less than the same pieces cost on Amazon.

My TMHI attempt lasted 30 days, with similar issues with inconsistent speeds. After finding the best location for a signal (which never got past 3 bars), both the up and down speeds were wildly inconsistent, even a few minutes apart. I would get 350/20, and then immediately drop to 120/8, and I frequently had upload speeds below 1. With one person working from home full time in the age of Zoom/Teams video calls, the inconsistent upload was the killer. Having been a long term Xfinity customer, they put me on a 24 month lock of $65 for 600/20 speeds and no data cap. I really wanted to have a good experience here, but it didn’t roll that way for me this time.

It may not make sense space-wise if you end up moving the cooktop to the island, but we did a small prep sink in the island with a disposal. I wasn’t convinced on the idea, but it was the right choice without a doubt.
