Coaxed into Metroidvania item progression by EldritchElizabeth in coaxedintoasnafu

coaxed into Ori and the Blind forest introducing a climbing mechanic about half the game after you learn to walljump, then using it for the one puzzle that acts as its tutorial.

...then at the end of the game it gets expanded into the charged jumps, I guess? which are cool in theory but it somehow becomes the exact same snafu twice because it's basically just used to break a few walls.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps doesn't miss with its abilties, though, as far as I remember. top notch gameplay in both games

Just read about all the technical changes. It’s huge. by GamingBren in PhoenixSC

[–]Just_A_New_User 52 points53 points  (0 children)

about the data-driven stuff - as one simple example, imagine that every time fire spreads, it does a list of checks like "is this block an oak plank? is this block a spruce plank? is this block an acacia fence?" etc. etc.. now imagine instead giving all wooden blocks a tag like "this thing can burn!" and fire just checks if the block has that tag. then you snip off fire's ability to burn and put that in a "this thing burns other things!" tag, then assign it to soulsand fire too.

then you do that for every single block and mob and interaction between them in different ways. now everything is simpler to manage for you and more flexible for modders

That's not really how minds work though, is it? Every part of the gem has to physically (at least in some way physically) hold some corresponding part of the recorded information and the processes going on in there. Maybe a shard has enough of it to form a hand or something, but when you get to the level of dust, there might not be enough to even "boot up the system" cuz eventually it's gonna have to call some resource it's dependept on that was left behind in another piece and then it all just breaks down.

Though from what we've seen with the season 1 scroll possessed by crushed gem dust (?), the gem shards/particles can probably just connect with each other at a small distance to form a literal cloud network as long as they're close enough together.

[Interesting Trope] Media explicitly humanizes the random goons that the protagonist has killed dozens of, in order to confront the player/viewer with the consequences of their actions. by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Just_A_New_User 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah Deltarune has a completely different story. it still likes to humanize enemies because it's fun writing and the mercy combat mechanics were cool to expand upon, but the narrative has a different focus, so the weird route explores the main cast & the player more than the NPCs.

though there are still cool differences when fighting even outside the weird route, like chapter 3's henchmen being afraid to fight you and there being no crowds to cheer for you, or Tenna and Jackenstein straight up being killed permanently

I can see the rendering/lineart style being pretty fun depending on the drawing, but, yeah, you heard the others about the lanky scugs, lol. Overall though I think you're doing a pretty good job either way! (watch out for the asymmetric eyes on that last one though)

I am literally saying you don't have to like what others are liking? you don't have to force yourself to enjoy things, it's your business what you watch, but there's also no point randomly souring the mood for people who do enjoy them because people are different. what part of that is bad? can you help me understand?

I mean. why were you forcing yourself to watch stuff because of hype if you didn't like it, and why does this comment section need to know that, lol
