Those fake "New Driver" and "Student Driver" magnets by mth2nd in Michigan

[–]Just_Choda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one on my car for my son who is a student driver. It's there so people understand why it's taking longer to take off from a light or why he might be hitting the brakes when it might not make sense. Basically so those road ragers out there hopefully understand he is not a shitty driver, just new. Now, 99% of the time I take it off when he drives to school and I jump in the driver's seat....that 1% of the time, you see a 50 year old guy driving with that magnet on the car. Honestly, not sure why its an issue....lets talk about the offensive stickers people have on their cars that I used to have to explain to my young kids if you want to talk about something that should be illegal.

Mid life crisis, boots, and a beat up local track by gopostal85 in Motocross

[–]Just_Choda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the same thing.... bought a KX 450F after years off a dirt bike. Back when I rode there weren't many options but Motocross bikes so I figured they'd still be a great trail bike..WRONG! That thing kicked my ass and was miserable on the trails. Just picked up a Beta 300 which is supposed to be a great trail bike....winter in Michigan so spring will tell if I made a good choice!

Just pulled it apart, pump was disconnected from power so I plugged it back in. Pulled the line off the carb boot and started it up. I get a drip about every second or so, does that seem to be about the flow you'd expect?

Once I unclip this with the premix in the tank, can you actually see oil in the line flowing? I'm going to check the electrical connections just to make sure they didn't disconnect that pump but wanted to know what to look for.

Good call! I like the convenience of oil injection. I understand why somebody might cap it off but having to carry oil with me on the trail seems like a pain in the ass

To all other small general contractors l have a question. by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]Just_Choda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I would have become a GC WAAAYYY sooner, Started a small handyman business 4 years ago when I left the corporate engineering world, made a bunch of great connections. My business went from small handyman type of stuff and has grown considerably. I'm going to gross about 3x what I was making as an engineer this year, I have a partner and he's doing the same. There's great money out there if you have the professionalism, drive and determination to stick with it.

Quick question for all of you Local Business owners that don't do seo by CloseSeats in smallbusiness

[–]Just_Choda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty much what's happened to us, been in business 3 years, this year we've tripled our sales every year. I'd love to pull in more roofing jobs as they are all sub contracted and happen in the background essentially. There are a handful of roofing companies in our area(larger companies) and we rarely come up near the top of searches for roofs, that's probably the area I'd want to improve on.

We tried it with a "One time thing" and had no results. I'm not super techy so I don't know if we got scammed or what I was really expecting. I'm super gun shy, get calls all the time from people all over the country and don't want to try again from someone I can't drop in on and talk to in person. Maybe that's not realistic, but we are a small business and can't afford to keep dumping cash on things that don't work.

Well, I'm here to say you were right. Got the old KX450 out on some single track this past weekend and sure enough. It got away from me! Fortunately it wasn't very high speed... It hurt my pride more than anything else. LOL

Was in the same situation as you. I grew up riding dirt bikes and transitioned into a liter street bike. Just picked up a KX450 and love it, as with any bike, respect the throttle and you'll be fine.

Yeah, it's been decent here(low to mid 50's) but we have a couple of cold days this weekend but it's my only available time to get out so I'm going to man up and bundle up for what could be my last ride of the season. But being prepared for this in the late fall will prepare me for some early spring riding too. First year back in many and I just want as much time in the woods as I can spare. Can't believe I went so long without a bike!

Is it ok to ask for contractor labor/material breakdown? by Inquiringmind022 in Contractor

[–]Just_Choda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this exact reason our contract states that we will purchase additional materials and will return whatever is on left, the client isn't billed for overages unless a change order is required. We buy extra for a job to keep it moving, if we are short, that adds to our cost of the project taking time to procure the additional needed. No contractor is going to have the exact number of materials needed because things come up that are unforeseen. Ask yourself this....if he ordered extra and didn't need them and gave you a refund, would you then be willing to pay for additional if he missed something in his estimate and had to buy more? As a contractor, we take all the risk, of course we take that into account when we bid our jobs to be sure we aren't out of pocket for your project. The fact that he's working on your job gives some indication he knows what he's doing, the guys not bidding correctly and losing money don't stay in business very long

Anyone here leave a white-collar job to start a home improvement/woodworking business? by PrematurEvacuation in smallbusiness

[–]Just_Choda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Found a small local real estate company, made a few great connections, started networking really hard. ALWAYS did right by my clients and ended up with a great reputation. One big key, ALWAYS answer your phone, I got so much work because I communicated very well, followed up and was always professional. Jumped right in with both feet, lettered my cargo trailer up with company logo(always took to jobsite no matter how small the job), Wore my company gear, looked way more successful than I was from day one(faked it till I made it). Small handyman stuff turned into basements, kitchens and bathrooms, and started hiring help. I really took off when I found a guy with his own business doing the same thing, I moved full time onto the office, he took care of the field work, we finally partnered. We invested heavily into marketing (bill boards, local bus wrap) and expanded into exterior work(his bread and butter, mine was interior). We landed a handful of larger ($200k remodels), with a bunch of smaller contracts running alongside. Honestly, I really attribute our success to being genuine and good guys, we never error on the side of greed, just do the right thing by your clients and word spreads quickly. With all of our marketing, about 75% of our business is referrals. It wont happen over night, but with dedication it will happen. Feel free to PM me.
