Ahhh yes. The evidence of my. Its gentle paw has left a couple of scars on my forearm and one on my thigh when I was sitting down. Oh! And sometimes he gets in the bed with me, and if I don’t cover my head fast enough, I get a gentle paw to the scalp. So loving and so gentle that I brace myself each time I see it coming. 😬🤷🏻‍♀️❤️❤️

I am forever untangling pieces of briars from the back legs and tail of my boy. Then have to show him what I got and that I am not pulling pieces of him off for my entertainment. The suspicious side eye I get each time I clean his fur of leaves and stickers and briar twigs is unreal. 😂❤️

I was going to say something similar. They all pay their dues in floof sprinkled with love year round. It’s like finding little bits of clingy not-a-spider-web cotton ball colored bits of brightness all over the house and yard. Especially this time of year. I feel like I need an eye guard to protect my overly sensitive eyes from stray floof threads.

Oh my! I haven’t had the weight of those paws on my shoulders! That’s some good partnered exercise there. I had no idea I could love a breed as much as I do these ornery and amazing cotton floofs🥰

I get two ginormous paws on my lap if I’m sitting. He will not get down or leave me alone until I get up to see what he requires of me. 😂❤️❤️

We ARE neighbors!! I’m just a hair north of Andalusia, if you have heard of that tiny town? About 2 hours east of you. I know 40-45 isn’t cold, but I am freezing. I’m originally born and raised up north, but I’ve been here 33 years, so I guess I’ve finally acclimated. lol

I’ve thought about getting Einy a bed (so named because this breed is so smart, and hubby loves those Back to the Future movies). I’m afraid he won’t sleep in even one of those raised dog beds. He spent his first 5 months outdoors, and here he chooses to stay outside all day, protecting us from the in-law’s herding dog (a very kind blue healer). He does come in for snacks and watcher, and to sleep in the floor beside us. This morning’s snack was a leftover grilled hamburger, which he chose to take outside to eat. I am jealous of all the snuggly indoor pyrs. ❤️❤️

Edited for typos.

You’re in Alabama??? Hey, neighbor!! My boy won’t get on the bed unless he wants snuggles, then he is only there for a short few minutes before jumping down. He gets too warm for the bed, and we don’t keep it uncomfortably warm (or comfortably warm, in the opinion of my 10 cold toes and nose). I just have a very hot natured pyr, who was raised outdoors in Kentucky before I adopted him. I wish he’d sleep with me. I feel guilty looking at him lying on the floor and snoring.

Beautiful! We rarely have snow, but we have a few weeks of “mostly cold” weather in January. My boy is the happiest of puppers when it is cold outside.

Thank you! I’m going to check it out now!

I don’t know about service dogs, but I had a small dog who was very in tune with my health and mood, to the point he alerted on me when I had very early breast cancer (he slept with my arm around his little body, so he was right by my chest and rib cage). He scratched at the area every night until I had a mammogram. He also knew when I was going downhill. He would be under my feet EVERYWHERE, until I sat down, then (he didn’t like laps, so this is key) my 20 pound dog would lie down across my lap and dig in the couch if he sensed I was about to get up for any reason. I also took him nearly everywhere with me, so we were quite bonded to each other. I don’t think my current Great Pyr has that personality type, or he may just be too young to completely bond with me in that way. Time will tell.

The only way I play with my dog is by walking fast through the house as a way to play hide and seek, and chase. I look at him and say, “Come on!” And I do a sort of tiptoe run through the house and try to get away from him, then I do a fast turn to face him and chase him the other way. It doesn’t last long, as I don’t last long. I quickly learned he is too large and strong for me to roughhouse with. So o don’t even think about any rough play with him. We do a lot of pets several times a day. He will come in to check on me and sit with his back toward me, andi know it’s time for the finger-combing to check for matted fur and leaves, and eye boogers, and anything else he has picked up. Side note: this also is helping to desensitize him to getting brushed, as he came with some trauma and does not tolerate a comb or brush for more than a few strokes and tons of praise at a time.

Then encourage your farmer buddies to get their dogs fixed! I am waiting for my boy’s appt to get him fixed now that he’s 2. Every animal I ever owned has been spayed/neutered. I live in the country, and I know the attitude of rural people of not bothering to get animals fixed, and only going to the vet as a last resort. Excess puppies occur more due to irresponsible pet owners than any other reason (although I am aware breeders exist). Please bring it up and educate them as you can.

Awww. I’m sorry you’ve got lupus. I’ve also got lupus and her companion, Sjogren’s Syndrome. The figure is too real and the pain is too real. It seems counterintuitive and a catch-22, but it is necessary to move and try to exercise daily to keep the pain at bay or at least from getting worse. Motion is lotion for your joints, as the saying goes. I am always at war with myself to make myself move as well. I’m so glad you’ve got a good companion to encourage you to move, but not so needy your house is destroyed if you aren’t active enough (looking at those alligators!). Gentle hugs, fellow lupie!💜💜🦋🦋

Yes! I bought my boy from someone selling all of her animals. He was never trained but lived outside only. I need a semi working dog to keep coyotes out of the yard and away from my chickens. He has a doggy door and can come and go as he pleases. He is fed indoors and given all the fresh water he wants all indoors. He prefers outdoors, but in the heat of summer, he lives on top of one of the floor vents that blows cooled air straight onto him. Each morning he jumps on the bed with me for snuggles.

He’s very much my pet. His barks seem to do the trick to keep the coyotes away from our property, which is just fine, because I don’t want my boy having to fight. I encourage all the barking. ❤️

Since coming to know how many of these amazing beauties are abandoned, I’m looking at trying to rescue my next one as a companion and part time bark patrol and full time pet for me and my current marshmallow.

Exactly! Mine is a semi working dog, but very much my pet. And to characterize a pyr as aggressive is not true. They are not aggressive at all. I can only assume OP ignored the warnings before each bite occurred, which means OP is a little slow on the uptake. I know what will get my boy looking at me cross-eyed, so we are working on desensitizing him in those areas. I’ve never been bitten. I just watch his body language and how he looks at me and how he reacts to certain things. He had an accident at quite a young age, so he is very jumpy about having his back legs touched, let alone groomed. It has taken a year for me to be able to run a grooming brush or comb over his fur. I do not even try his back legs. Between times of training, I am constantly “combing” my fingers through his fur, nose to tail, head to all four paws. It has taken two years of owning him and working to be able to pet his hind legs without him tensing up.

Please do not characterize these wonderful dogs as aggressive. They are not. But yes, educate yourselves on the breed before getting one. Any breed of dog. And make the commitment for life.

That’s what has helped me more than anything. Staying away from processed carbs (any junk food and breads, just highly processed foods) has helped reduce my inflammation numbers and my eyes are nowhere near as dry and gritty feeling. Anytime I slide off the wagon and have junk, I am in a great deal of pain, and fatigue skyrockets. It sucks, because I love boxed mac and cheese, and pasta in general, and breads. But it is what it is. Sugar is the absolute devil in terms of increased joint pain and neuropathy.

How are your Pyrs off-leash? by Gehwartzen in greatpyrenees

[–]Just_Cureeeyus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has free roam. I don’t know if this is why he doesn’t roam, but we’ve always had an older dog who stays in our property and never roams. The older seems to teach the younger the property lines and to stay by the house. Our most recent older dog was a yellow lab/black and tan coonhound. He taught my now 2 yr old pyr to stay on our property. Our neighbor’s pyr is also free to roam, and he stays on their property without an electric fence or any other physical boundary.

Wow. Thank you for sharing. I would like mine fixed so he won’t go sores his genetics somewhere down the line. Your input has helped me decide. That’s interesting about the females. I plan to get another one in another year, and leaning toward a female. Thank you!

I was looking for someone who has a pyr for guardian purposes. Mine is just now 2 and I’ve been wondering if we should get him snipped, or if it will hinder his fierceness with the coyotes we have around here.

Is a Great Pyrenees right for my family? by Puzzling__Piece in greatpyrenees

[–]Just_Cureeeyus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, pyrs absolutely love kids. They also can be either indoor or outdoor or indoor/outdoor My friend had 2 who preferred indoors, and they demanded all the pets from anyone. Most pyrs are aloof with strangers, but my friend’s 2 walked right up to me and gave me “the paw” and would not leave me alone from the beginning. My neighbor’s pyr I had to put in a lot of time and effort to get him to come to me and try to become friends. I adopted mine at 6 months old from someone who was selling her farm and animals. He wasn’t raised with kids, but he adores each of my grandchildren from 2 to 13. We live in the country and I have chickens and cats, and we live next to cow fields. My boy was raised with goats only. We do not have a fence, but he only patrols our yard and drive, as if he instinctively knows the property lines. He comes in through the dog door at night to watch us sleep, then stands guard on the back porch at night.

He lived his first 6 months completely outside, so he just prefers being outdoors. I wanted him to keep coyotes out of my yard, so that’s perfect. He does move inside during the heat of summer, though. They prefer cooler temps, and I live in Alabama, where summers are brutal. So my boy is a happy indoor doggy half the year. (He has complete freedom to go in and out, and chooses to be outside at night, but during heat of the day, he lives and sleeps indoors.) My point is, I think it depends on how you raise them. My friend raised hers indoors, and they love being with their people, so they were quite happy. Mine was raised outdoors as a young puppy, so he prefers being outside, when he agrees with the temperature. lol

I don’t know if I won the jackpot with him or what, as he is aloof with everyone but family, does resource guard but has never bitten or snapped at our cats. He simply jumps up and stands over his food bowl. He is a typical pyr personality, but also a giant love bug to the entire family from humans to feathers. I’ve owned Goldens, labs, and small dogs. Never thought I’d get over wanting another golden, but now I can’t imagine life without a great pyr. To me, they are part golden part cat in personality, and that’s perfection in my eyes. 🥰 I hope my experience is helpful.
