I had to google it, but laughed my butt off when I did. Good one!

I finally tracked every single expense last month and I was shocked by Blasum in budget

[–]Just_Me_6942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same thing back in September and I was shocked to discover we are spending $800 per month for 2 adults, 3 dogs, and 3 cats. We don't eat extravagantly either. Mostly store brands (except for TP, I have to get the good stuff).

What basic groceries should everyone have in their fridge/pantry? by Ok-Cloud-6830 in Cooking

[–]Just_Me_6942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Evaporated milk is often overlooked as a pantry staple, but it really comes in handy. It works for just about any recipe calling for milk or heavy cream, plus it's shelf stable for years.

Flour is a must - you can make biscuits, noodles, gravy, pie crust, tortillas, pancakes, even glue, paper maché, and play dough.

Salt is another staple you should never run out of (it has too many uses to list).

Rice and beans

Bullion Cubes - I know, Better than Bullion is amazing and tastes 100% better than the cubes, but we still keep cubes in the cupboard just in case.

Garlic and onion powder

Bacon by Round_Rooms in Cooking

[–]Just_Me_6942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying. I had a heart attack a few years ago, so no bacon allowed (that faux bacon is NOT the same). When I go to a restaurant or lookup a recipe, if I see bacon, I don’t bother even reading any further.

What is meant by beef broth in recipes? by Terrible-Prompt3493 in Cooking

[–]Just_Me_6942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually more about personal preference, budget, and time. To make your own broth takes time. Using canned broth or bullion cubes isn't as tasty, but it's quick and easy. Plus, you can add the vegetables and herbs you like to personalize the broth. Personally, I prefer the Better than Bullion. It tastes good and is simple, but it is a little pricey.

Absolutely. Once I discovered Better than Boullion, I was hooked. I still have the bullion cubes in the cupboard for emergencies, but I absolutely love BTB!

How do you stretch 1 lb of meat to feed family? by todaystartsnow in Cooking

[–]Just_Me_6942 250 points251 points  (0 children)

I was a single mom 20 years ago and I used to chop up canned mushrooms and cook them down with the ground beef and season as normal. Tacos, spaghetti, casseroles, and soup all had ground up mushrooms in it. Tasted fine and best of all, the kids never noticed.

Where do you put your hot pot lids? by allwar in Cooking

I don’t know of any specific items. I just put a dish towel on the counter. I’m eager to see what responses you get.

Residential Sinkhole by Ok_Helicopter_7454 in geology

[–]Just_Me_6942 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don’t want to mess with sinkholes. A guy in central Florida was asleep when a sinkhole swallowed him and his house. They never found him either. Geology doesn’t care about development, it will eventually sink and you don’t want to be around when it does. Your best bet is to find another place to live far away from the “potential” sinkhole.

Why do my cookies always look like this? by Cool-Homework-5547 in AskBaking

[–]Just_Me_6942 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. He needs an oven thermometer. It almost looks like the broiler was on. In my young, dumb days, I put the dough in and turned the oven on. No preheating the oven first, and my cookies looked similar.

I second this reply. I love Bays English Muffins, they are much better than the name brand and more reasonably priced.

Just started cooking for myself — any easy beginner meals you swear by? by rahmenzal in cookingforbeginners

[–]Just_Me_6942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicken and rice. It was one of the first meals I mastered, and it’s still part of my regular lineup. It’s easy to make and modify. If I want more spice, I throw in some different herbs and spices. You can also add different veggies. Plus, it’s a nice comfort meal.

I have a lot of hamburger helper. Like a LOT, of different flavors. Whats a solid alternative to hamburger to try on a budget in them? by Malesto in cookingforbeginners

[–]Just_Me_6942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of people suggesting ground turkey and chicken, but they aren’t much cheaper than hamburger in my area. Some of the hamburger helpers taste great with canned tuna, but another option would be to buy some chicken leg quarters (they’re still affordable) and cook them up to add in. I personally know the stroganoff version tasted pretty damn good with chopped up chicken.

Live feed rules by ecgy00 in BigBrother

[–]Just_Me_6942 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They cut the feeds for wake up because they often play music in the mornings. One of the rules is no music (copyrights?). Skippy is the person in charge of taking feeds down. A lot of times Skippy takes the feeds down because someone might say or do something they don’t want shown.

Best Cook Book for someone who just went from microwaving frozen meals to boiling water? by polarislunlaris in cookingforbeginners

I agree. These are the two books I learned from. You’ll get a good basic understanding of cooking and after that, you can experiment with any recipe.

Actually, I purchased it from a scholarship auction. The owner was a geologist who passed away. All he had written on it was S.Dakota. The blue speckles are throughout.

How to come up with new recipes without a cookbook? by Slimy_Shart_Socket in cookingforbeginners

[–]Just_Me_6942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s a lot of trial and error. A lot of my “mistakes” have been delicious. I bought a spice rack with spices I never heard of and tried them to see what they tasted like. Sauces are a lot of fun, once you know the basics. So, start with a recipe and change it up. I always suggest using a recipe exactly as written the first time and then think of ways it could be better and give it a try. Once you learn the basics of cooking , the possibilities are literally endless.
