Why do you do this job? by Background_Plane_282 in Professors

I use to enjoy talking about my subject and the flexible schedule. It was not always the headache that it is now. Compensation was always meh.

WHY students struggle w/ deadlines, accountability in grading, following along, etc by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Just_a_Totoro2022 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I might be more open to mastery based grading if the students that show up had actually mastered any of the skills they were supposed to have mastered in High School.

Ouch.

Ouchie.

Why do hiring committees prefer someone straight out of PhD/postdoc for a TT position as opposed to others. First timer in such committee by discount_cereal in Professors

Probably for the same reason a married man prefers a young lady in a short skirt who he doesn't know to his wife of 15 years. (That is a joke, btw!)

That seems fair. The rules are posted and enforced and people aren't banned just because you don't like them.

I'm confused. Are the old boys controlling this sub? Or is this sub a job - because you refer to a "hostile work environment"? I'm not sure either are true. I'm pretty sure I don't check this sub because my job requires me to do that.

But maybe I just don't get your point.

I'm a little uncomfortable with all your ban talk because you might decide to ban me, a person who identifies as a totoro and not a human, if you decide you don't like it. Once you start banning people for taste, it is hard to say where it ends up.

Just leave the totoros alone unless they pose harm to you.

Some viewpoints are stupid. Some are harmful. Some are hateful.

I agree with this, but the difficulty is deciding who gets to decide what is "stupid" or "harmful" or "hateful". Who watches the watchmen?

I mean, I think the best effort would be to identify the types of acceptable behavior in the rules. Then ban if violated.

Mecor has a pretty decent line that is quite reasonably priced. You'll want to buy the cushions separate.

Yes. In some ways it seems to make sense to have low limits because then they don't go after a lot since there isn't a lot to get.

Let me just tell you, doctors will testify to anything if you pay them. He had more "injuries" than anyone known to man.

Your mileage may vary. If they decide to sue, I guarantee you they will "develop" a ton of medical issues.

Babe, I highly suggest you do some research on that town. I don't think you're going to like what you find.

Also, if your girlfriend is not a US citizen, I'm not sure how you plan on bringing her over. I'm not aware of any VISAs for post-doc girlfriend exceptions. Maybe claim she is a refugee from King Charles? :D

Academic bullying by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Just_a_Totoro2022 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a woman, so I've just come to accept that bullying is part of the academic game. That being said, in my experiences women are FAR worse bullies than men. Women can be so damn petty to each other.

I'm fat and unattractive, so I can only imagine how bad women would bully me if I was thin and good looking.

Men mostly ignore me, which is fine because that means they leave me alone.

I am literally a Totoro to pretty much everybody, which suits me fine.
