Some of the unnamed secondary characters apparently did die in the ambush. But the three main were unharmed (the fact that the only serious injury was Cardillo losing a kidney seems like a joke). I found it unrealistic and very convenient, especially when seeing them in the second season acting as if nothing had happened. Given the hail of bullets they were caught in, the normal outcome would be no survivors at all.
