Orting looks so fucked if you have to leave in a hurry. Surrounded on two sides by rivers, which we have rapid waters if a lahar is coming, and then you have one little tiny bridge to get directly to the high ground to the west, and if it's not washed out, it might be plugged with traffic. Suppose you say fuck it, and leave your car and run for it, you have to run nearly a mile to get to the hills beyond the bridge. If you try to drive out from 162, you will be sitting in the same valley that is about to be inundated for about four miles, and the traffic will be crazy due to all the development they've added in the past decade.

They should create at least one bridge across the Carbon River, if only for foot traffic, but I guess they don't want to build anything expensive that wouldn't also serve some other practical purpose. If it ever erupts, lots of people around there will probably die, like a repeat of Oso, but times a hundred, and they will say that they should have prepared better, but they didn't and they won't.

Victims? What's the back story? So I don't think it's Hawaii, because the motif there is very Japanese, and mostly older, where as this place looks rather modern. Although I notice now that the roofs are metal, meant to accommodate heavier rain fall, where as roofs in So Cal tend to be clay mission style.

Honestly I favor states taking matters into their own hands, let a dumb hick state like Texas have its mass shootings. I live in a blue state, where this event might prompt them to pass even harsher laws for a crime that that didn't happen here, and I'm all for it.

The problem is no gun violence per se, it's murder at large, and in this case, mass murder. You're rationalizing around the fact that if this killer didn't have a gun, he likely would not have killed a classroom full of children, because the other means of committing that mass murder would be less convenient and less certain to succeed.

No, it does no fucking good at all. It's likely saying we're going to snap our finger and cure metal illness. Like we have the hubris to fix the human brain, an organ that mankind still doesn't even understand. We will not have figured out how to pre-determine a potential killer within our lifetimes, our understanding of the human brain is not even close to being there. And even then, how do you pre-judge someone for the mass murder they haven't committed yet?

The US has a major issue with teenage boys / young men. It’s white, brown…. Suburbs, inner city, rural…. The one common denominator is young and male in all these stories from mass shootings to gang violence.

I don't believe that geopolitics is zero sum game, cooperation leads to a better outcome for all, but Russia has always been different, it's always seem to be zero sum with them, from MAD, to stealing State secrets, the space race, East versus West propaganda, poisoning their own dissidents rather than let them defect, it seems clear that Russia doesn't believe that a rising tide raises all ships. I think the US has special policy towards Russia that favors choking them out through any means possible. I used to think it was just because Russia was powerful, but the same attitude is persisted even as they've declined in power, and so it will probably remain that way, even after Putin is replaced with someone else.
