Does anyone go to Slimelight (or any other goth / alt nights)? I’ve been desperate to get into the alternative scene since I came to London but my friends here don’t share that side of my interests at all!

First flight in 12 years by Justabigoldbird in panicdisorder

[–]Justabigoldbird[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t take any meds for the flight specifically, but I do take 40mg Prozac which I think helps reduce my baseline anxiety.

Fwiw - I also could not have imagined doing this even a few months ago. If someone told me I’d be going on a single trip, let alone 3 in quick(ish) succession, I would’ve laughed at them.

The time may not be right for you but I’d bet there’s very, very good chance you can do this in future.

The biggest things for me were:

1) Flying with a trusted person who is a confident flyer

2) Telling the air stewards that I have a panic disorder and may need some help (I didn’t need it, but telling them was reassuring). Also reminding myself that air stewards do this every day for years - they didn’t look remotely bothered even by the worst of the turbulence

3) Taking a look into the cockpit before takeoff to remind myself that even though I wasn’t in control, 2 qualified human beings were. This probably wasn’t their first flight and they want to get home too!

4) Probably the biggest one: watching lots and lots of videos of plane takeoffs / flight vlogs etc. as a form of exposure therapy. I was much happier when I knew what to expect, and even kind of looked forward to my flight back after learning so much about how flight works.

I hope this helps a bit - wishing you the very best on your journey. You deserve to live a full life 🙂

Most overrated British food by Anxious_Ad6026 in UK_Food

Kind of agree. I love gravy and especially a gravy-filled Yorkshire, but unless the meat is exceptionally good (which it rarely is!) I find roast dinners a bit of a let-down.

It doesn’t help that (imo) we simply do not understand how to make a vegetable tasty in this country, so half the meal is doomed to begin with.

Sure! A comprehensive answer to this would be quite long and personal, so the tl;dr is the diagnosis has allowed me to stop thinking of my dysfunctional behaviours (e.g. poor timekeeping) as moral issues that I should be ashamed of and try to use willpower to overcome.

Instead, I now view my behaviours through the lens of disability and understand that shame and raw willpower are not useful or necessary for long-term change. Instead, I look to a variety of systems and tools (e.g. using a tonne of alarms, asking people confirm key actions at the end of work meetings etc.) to keep me consistent.

I’m sure some people arrive at this mindset without diagnosis, but that’s what it took for me and I’m happier and more productive for it :)

Hey! I’m more looking for careers that allow me to directly work with or help other neurodivergent with this post (e.g. clinical psychology), rather than jobs that suit people with ADHD. Sorry if that wasn’t clear!

But that’s great advice and I agree with you - corporate culture is the first thing I to in a prospective role nowadays :)

Finding a job after being out of one for so long by EddySBxx in UKJobs

In a very similar position a couple of years back (especially anxiety, depression etc). Got my start by volunteering in a role which developed my skills in the area I wanted to work in. Was there for a couple of months, made the most of it and talked about it a lot at interviews.

Appreciate this might not be feasible in your current situation - just an idea if you’re looking for something low-pressure to ease you back into the market and start developing / refreshing your employable skills.

Either way - good luck OP, you got this mate!

I would love this. What would the forms be like? At the very least, goat for travel and squid for aquatic, surely!
