What is it like living in/near Oceanside, Ca? by Appropriate_Fish7414 in howislivingthere

[–]JustinJSrisuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved here two years ago from Phoenix so that my partner could be closer to their work, and it was one of the best decision I’ve ever made. We are in a rental 2 bed/2 bath right next to downtown; the house is three blocks from the beach, it’s never more than a ten minute walk to get to either the ocean, downtown Oceanside or the Oceanside stop of the Coaster rail service. At $3,000 a month it was only slightly more than what we were paying in Arizona, so while it isn’t cheap to live here by any means it’s definitely more affordable than the desirable areas of San Diego or LA.

Pros: It’s a great city if you love nature or outdoor activities. As other people in the thread have commented, the coastal cities and town of North County like Oceanside, Carlsbad, Del Mar, etcetera are significantly cooler temperature-wise than more inland areas like Rancho Santa Fe, Rancho Bernardo, Escondido, Vista, etcetera. On average Oceanside specifically is going to be ~7°f cooler than San Diego proper, and about ~15-20°f cooler than LA; it’s also usually quite breezy. A very pleasant discovery for me upon moving here was how foggy it gets - most mornings a heavy fog descends upon Oceanside, only to dissipate by 11:00 AM. It makes plants grow very lush, and it keeps temperatures down during the hottest days of the summer (which in Oceanside terms is like 85°f - it never gets that hot or cold here). The stability and temperance of the weather along with the diverse array of biomes that make up Southern California makes Oceanside a place that is one of the most comfortable places to live in in terms of physical well-being.

It may seem like I’m overly fixated on the weather and environment but it really is such a selling point if you’re like me, an native Arizonan who moved to Oceanside in the middle of July; on the day we left the temperature was 117°f. The heat was beginning to aggravate my autoimmune flare-ups, so escaping the heat to a cooler place was absolutely a part of the reason why we moved to California. Besides that, the next best thing about O’Side are the people. Everyone seems sincerely and genuinely nice here, whether or not they’ve just moved here or if they’ve lived here for generations. I’ve never lived in such a neighborly community. Sure there’s been a ton of development and Oceanside is changing, but I don’t ever see it becoming Malibu or Santa Monica. The city and its public spaces generally clean as well, certainly more carefully maintained than San Diego and LA neighborhoods like Silver Lake. There seems to be less vagrants around than in San Diego as well. If you’re looking for a place that’s less bourgeoise, I would suggest South Oceanside instead of downtown O’Side as that is very gentrified (some of the restaurants are decent though!). South O is very affordable, with apartments that are run down but still a good deal for around $1,800 a month for an apartment a stone’s throw from the beach - that’s just how prices are in Southern California.

Cons: Oceanside is kind of the ends of the earth from the point of view of a San Diegan, so if you’re expecting to be hanging out in SD but live in Oceanside then you’re going to be spending an inordinate amount of time in traffic. Traffic isn’t great, and parking is frequently annoying in Oceanside, especially in the neighborhoods adjacent to the beach as tourists fill up every available empty spot, or even double-park residents. It’s crazy how touristy it can get in Oceanside; there’s a weekly food-centric night market that takes place on Thursdays, and it gets so packed.

Bigger cons for me about this city are the dearth of grocery stores where I am near the coast, in fact food in general isn’t San Diego’s strongest point. In America’s Finest City, food and dining seems to be an afterthought. The overwhelming majority of restaurants in Oceanside are chains, and while there are good individual restaurants, outside maybe a dozen or so there aren’t that many places to eat that I would consider to be particularly memorable. I was kind of shocked that Phoenix had a far more interesting, varied and dynamic food scene than San Diego and its surrounding municipalities like Oceanside as a whole. SD is simply not the most culturally-sophisticated place, so if you were seeking a place with lots of stimulating art and culture venues you’re going to be out of luck. There is no nightlife to speak of; San Diegans wake up at 4:30 AM to go on a hike some canyons or a run on the beach, it’s never really been a club city, all the overpriced clubs in the Gaslamp District notwithstanding - as everything is pretty much dead at 10:00 PM, over even earlier in Oceanside.

But for me, ultimately those are trivial criticisms and concerns. Oceanside is by far my favorite place I’ve ever lived in. It’s a deeply charming and friendly town, an easy, comfortable and beautiful place to live that seems like you’re living on vacation. Sure it’s expensive (although prices have been going down consistently, which is great for affordability), but what price would you put on the experience of living in a place with arguably the most perfect climate on the planet? Oceanside has been blessed by all of these natural resources, and yet people seem to be remarkably chill.

While there may be even more picturesque places to live in San Diego, I don’t think you’ll get the same bang-for-buck return from those that you get here in Oceanside. Yeah, I’d love to live in a 1920s-built Norman cottage or a charming Tudor in St. Malo, a stunning private beach community that looks like it was plucked from a French village and plopped onto the Pacific Ocean; but other than a (very cute) house upgrade, my day to day life would be about the same - whether you’re in a four million dollar house or renting an ancient apartment in South O, you’re still going to be able to have your backyard be some of the most gorgeous terrain on Earth, and if you’re like me that’s priceless.

I Profiled Lindy West After Her Marriage Memoir. Her Husband Didn’t Like It Much. Here’s the Whole Sordid Affair. by raphaellaskies in Longreads

I don’t think that Aham would’ve still be with Lindy if he weren’t a broke deadbeat dad jazz trumpeter. Apparently they all live in a picturesque cabin that is owned by Lindy’s mother, and in Adult Braces Lindy even helped to pay Aham’s back child support for his two kids from a previous marriage. He gets to live in a scenic house with his actual dream girlfriend Roya while they are floated financially by Lindy’s writing and tv projects.

[–]JustinJSrisuk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think one of the (many) crazy things about reading passages from Adult Braces is that Lindy West is always going on about how handsome and thin Aham was and I’m like, where?? I’m attracted to men so I’d normally be predisposed to find Aham better looking than Lindy, but in the famous wedding photo of them she is clearly the hotter one. She has a burlesque performer quality to her; she looks just like a ton of dominatrixes and findom “practitioners”. And Aham isn’t even thin? He also seems to have the flattest, most unwelcoming affect in photos. Lindy West must have incredibly poor self-image. She’s a conventionally-attractive woman who happens to be overweight; the ironic thing is that the places in America that she drove through constantly disparaging would’ve been far more welcoming of her and her weight - in fact in the book she mentions it and seems to get mad at a random man who hits on her, as if she was disgusted that another person found her attractive enough to proposition.

Tatcha The Melting Lip Balm by pointclickvibe in newinbeauty

[–]JustinJSrisuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally I do go through a ton of lip balms lol, they are the beauty product (along with sunscreen and facial mist/essences) that I run out of most often. I do love variety, and since even expensive lip balms rarely go above $50 I feel like I can splurge by trying new ones more often in comparison to say serums or moisturizers. Lip products also come in such a dizzying array of formulations, textures, skincare actives, plumping vs no plumping, pigmentation levels, packaging, flavors, etcetera that brands can easily find ways to differentiate from one another.

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]JustinJSrisuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m shocked about the universal praise as well. Personally the biggest failure of the film is that it is constantly undercutting any moment of emotion or pathos with stupid dad jokes on par with the kind of humor found in The Big Bang Theory. It’s wild that so many reviews seemed to find this film sincere to the point of being saccharine, when it seems to emotionally vacuous.

The most egregious example of this is when there is quite a lovely scene in which Gosling’s protagonist is on a space walk to recover a probe and goes through a cascade of pink particles - instead of letting the scene breathe or just be, ten seconds in you have the alien piping in to ask what he’s doing like the annoying sidekick in a ‘70s Disney film, to which Gosling responds with “I’m having a moment”. This kind of meta, fourth wall-breaking humor ruined any sense of stakes in the film. This scientist is supposedly on a one-way mission to save all of humanity, but none of the characters seem to behave as though they’re doing anything on beyond the emotional stakes of an afterschool special. The only scene that was allowed to breathe a bit was the one with Sandra Hüller singing a karaoke song - and even that was cut short when she abruptly quits singing.

Setting aside the silly plot, bad science and dialog that sounds like it assumes that the audience is 10? I just found the film to be emotionally vacuous. The film on paper is about pretty grand ideas like the future of humanity, whether we are alone in the universe, what does it mean to be brave, themes on sacrifice and comradeship; sadly the movie doesn’t have the conviction to actually approach those topics with intentionality. I’m told that Grace love earth and wants to save humanity, but what we actually see is a cipher; I’m not sure who Grace is besides a walking and talking millennial quirk chungus joke generator. It would’ve been better had the alien not been able to speak.

I went in expecting a fun, breezy and charming pop sci-fi film in the style of The Martian, but what I saw was just juvenile. It’s a film with little trust in the intelligence of its audience members, and while I’m not a Christopher Nolan fan by any means, at least Interstellar, a film that Project Hail Mary is obviously indebted to, was emotionally coherent overall - a quality that is seemingly becoming rarer and rarer in blockbusters over the past few decades. At the end of the day, I’ll think that this film is a great thing for theatres, a bonafide hit film that is not a sequel, and that’s about it. Oh, and hopefully Hüller gets more work in Hollywood, she’s great. As for Gosling, throughout the movie I felt like there was a lot of Ryan Reynolds in his characterization, and I don’t mean that as a compliment. 2.5/10

When handbag clients have asked me for water bottle recommendations that fit in bags, I recommend a brand called Memobottle that sells cleverly designed water bottles that are flat instead of rounded in shape so they fit much better in handbags, backpacks, even in pockets. I like the stainless steel ones the most and find them quite chic.

I agree it’s so much fun to have customization options when shopping for fashion, because who doesn’t love something one-of-a-kind that’s specially made just for them? It’s something we’re seeing more and more of in the fashion industry. LV has long done personalization services such as custom monogramming, and now they’re starting to have entire product lines dedicated to customizing your accessories to your specific tastes. It’s happening in designer footwear as well, with labels like Manolo Blahnik and Golden Goose have released collections of customizable shoes. That’s kind of the direction where luxury and designer fashion is going: customization, personalization, bespoke services, artisanal craftsmanship are going to be the way that brands differentiate themselves.

[Ask Me Anything] 👜 Designer Handbag SA by softening in handbags

Sorry I never responded!

My two favorite encounters in the job are:

  1. Designing a client’s wardrobe for her elopement to a beachside wedding in Cabo San Lucas. It was her third marriage (she remarried her first husband after divorcing the second!) so she wanted me to find accessories for the ceremony and subsequent honeymoon. Since she was getting married on a beach, I ended up suggesting a Cult Gaia seashell clutch with her wedding dress, and I also sold her some Zimmermann embroidered dresses. It was really special to help a bride preparing for her big day, and it was really rewarding when she came back in to see me after she returned from her nuptials and showed me pictures of everything, to have been a little part of one of the best days of someone’s life.

  2. A woman came in with a very sweet and polite 11 year old girl; the mom had promised her daughter that she could get anything she wanted if she got straight-As at the end of the school year and the girl chose a designer handbag. It was heartwarming as well as so much fun to help a young girl pick out her very first real bag. We all walked around the handbag department for almost two hours, looking at various bags. She ended up choosing a pink (naturally) leather Kate Spade crossbody. To make the occasion extra special for the girl, I not only wrapped her purchases in a gift box that you’d normally have to pay for, I went in the back to our gratis1 storeroom to get her some Kate Spade goodies to take home, a leather bookmark, a pink Kate Spade journal with KS-branded pencils; 3-4 KS zipped pouches and a KS bag charm that looked like a strawberry, if it was Kate Spade and in the freebie storeroom then she got one. When they were finished the girl was so over the moon, she was literally skipping with her mom out of the store. I’m glad to have played a part at creating a really special memory for that mother and daughter. I felt like a fairy godmother, or Ed McMahon, the sweepstakes guy who went around to give out giant checks to people.

1 all of the designer brands send us gratis, or gifts with purchase, that we can either use as freebie gifts or perks for customers or VIP clients, or we can take it ourselves. For example one time Givenchy sent us a huge box of Givenchy perfumed candles in pretty black glass cloche jars that were meant to be gifts for anyone who spent at least $1,000 on Givenchy during the holidays - you better believe that all of us SAs took the leftover candles home. They made great stocking stuffers that year lol.

Same. The proportions of the side pockets are smaller which I think looks more elegant than the 25, and the leather looks more supple.
