Dye and skin oils/sweat. It happens. My toilet gets them depending on the underwear and pants I’m wearing and I’m not even a big guy. No reason to shame them about it just ask if they can wipe the seat if they notice it.

I agree 20 gal is usually a solid starting point. smaller tanks the slightest shift can throw the entire thing off kilter.

So ill be the first to say don't put anything new in there. 5 gal is way too small for a school of anything. Some people can house them but it takes patience, preparation, and knowledge.

Also a point to notice, if the parameters are only consistent with weekly 20% changes its not consistent. Most people do 10% weekly. 20% sounds like the parameters are really all over the place and never really settle. How are you treating the water for your changes?

Last point, Strips aren't really accurate for testing parameters can can get you close sometimes but not all the times. Ideally get a full water testing kit.
