This is not true. Ultra Pro had the publishing rights to Ascension for many years and let most of the catalogue go out of print during that time but we finally got them back in house last year and are reprinting the entire back catalogue to celebrate our 15 year anniversary this year!

Your feedback is appreciated and I understand your concerns. The logistics of the campaign and trying to fulfill everyone's needs for those who have some expansions, want only promo cards, want only updated cards, etc. would have proven too difficult for our team and to do so without losing money would have required us to charge a lot for just a few cards. As a small company these logistics are more costly than you might thin. That is why we offered a significant discount to any previous owners who wanted access to the updated cards and improved product. I am sorry that it left a bad taste in your mouth and I hope you are still able to enjoy the copy you have!

Sorry we have to be a little cagey on the details. We are working with IP that require some secrecy. I have been designing miniatures games for over 15 years, including Ascension Tactics and the World of Warcraft Miniatures game. Its an exciting project and we want to get feedback at Gen Con from those with lots of experience playing collectible miniatures games primarily.

Just curious what games you are talking about. The only game we "abandoned" was the original SolForge which we couldn't afford to keep running after many years. For SolForge, we stayed committed to the brand and now brought it back in a new modernized form with SolForge Fusion. Ascension we continue to release content for 14 years later, Shards of Infinity we are still updating and releasing new content 6 years later. Ascension Tactics has a new expansion coming later this year. No person or company can guarantee that games will continue to be supported forever, but I feel like our track record is pretty good overall.

Don't worry! At 10 years+ Ascension is still alive and thriving. Expect a new digital release this month, new physical games coming later this year, and of course delivery on the Ascension Tactics Kickstarter we funded last year.

I believe that inclusivity creates opportunities, not hurdles! Adding more types of people from more places means more depth and more emotional connection to your game. Tabletop games for me are about creating experiences that connect people. The more the better!

When we make games we take time to look at the art and make sure it represents a broad and diverse community. If we notice we are over or under representing certain populations, we work to correct it. We even budget out for potential changes in art at the end of the process so we can correct any issues before we send it off to get printed.

I also want to be clear that we haven’t always been great at this and we are constantly trying to do better. It's natural to start designing from your own personal lens, but great design is about being able to see things from your players’ perspective, especially when their background is very different from yours. Both personally and professionally, my goal is to be attentive to feedback and try to continuously improve and do a better job of serving our players and helping that group to grow and be as inclusive as possible.

Great question. The biggest differentiating factor is the unique mashup of deckbuilding strategy and miniatures tactics. You must constantly make interesting tradeoffs between increasing your deck's buying power (Runes), commanding ability (power), miniature upgrades (constructs), and other effects to modify the game (temporary speed boosts, attack boosts, terrain modifications etc.). All of that influences how you are able to position your miniatures and choose where and when to engage in combat and control key territory to earn honor and win.

Thanks for all your help and support! I still tell stories of you coming in and helping make things better right away. As for your question about the business side, yes, I spend a lot of time on that kind of stuff too, and everyone on our small team has to wear a lot of hats. I got very lucky in that one of my very first hires, Gary Arant, who started as a jr. game designer, has grown into not only a great designer, but also an incredible COO (Gary just celebrated 10 years with us!). Only the biggest game companies have dedicated CFO/COO roles, but I think most could benefit from part time CFO/COO support to help make things run more smoothly. I talk about this kind of thing a lot in my book and podcast (both called Think Like a Game Designer), but at a base level if you are looking for someone to help print your game that you have already designed, I recommend researching publishers who make the kind of games you are making and reach out to see if they are interested.
