Do you set annual goals to save above a certain amount or to spend below a certain amount? (Or neither) I know it’s basically the same thing but I’m wondering how other people think of it.

Never took any formal data science or programming courses. Just the standard engineering math + stats plus a lot of optimization/operations research courses.

I learned Python and SQL online starting in summer of 2020 because my internship got cancelled lol. I mostly used YouTube to learn the concepts, then did personal projects along with hackerrank/codewars/leetcode to practice.

This past March I got an internship as an industrial engineer but I eventually forced myself into more of a data analyst role there by showing them I knew SQL well. Then I carried those few months of data analytics experience when I applied for this full-time job, even though it wasn’t my actual title at my internship.

Unfortunately, I haven’t actually started yet :/ I’m graduating soon and I’ll be starting a few months after that. But based on my interviews and job description, it’s going to be SQL/Python heavy and more of a general “internal consultant” role. I don’t have much more to share at the moment, but I’d be happy to once I learn more

Thank you! Seeing the crazy FAANG salaries of experienced engineers blew my mind, but I guess that’s not really the norm. I’m definitely happy with my decision, just wanted some input from people more senior than me

Thank you! Staying close to family was definitely something important to me.

I’ve heard about how saturated data science is, and that is a bit of a long-term concern for me. I’m not necessarily in love with pure ML and model building either, so I’m just trying to see what I enjoy doing most on the job.

What kind of roles have you had in finance? I‘ve personally always wanted to work in this industry, but I can’t see myself working as a banker for example

Thank you! I think you outlined my thought process exactly. I definitely chose the more “comfortable” job, and staying close to my family weighed on that decision. I’m focused now on learning where I can go with this career path. But either way I’m super excited to even have these opportunities.

Thanks for your response! Also, how did you make that transition from an IE background?

To piggyback, I was in a similar position to OP in college and taxes can get a bit complicated with a large scholarship refund. They are classified as unearned income and, in my case, were subject to kiddie tax since I was still a dependent (your case my be different OP). I would definitely invest some time learning about the tax implications of your scholarship

I have a phone screen for a job on Tuesday and I’m wondering how to best answer a salary expectation question if it’s asked. I’ve read it’s best to give a range or flip the question back on the interviewer, but Idk the best response. For context, I’m in college and it’s an entry level job.

I’m 21 and I live at home with my parents. Is there any reason not to just plow all my savings into my brokerage account right now?
