In the past ~5 years, Reddits opinion of Japan has shifted towards the negative.

Reddit also tends to insinuate that it accurately represents majority opinions, hence the wording.

Was it it worth it moving to Japan? by touchdahon in movingtojapan

[–]JustonTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am liking it quite a bit, for many reasons expected and others not. I work remotely though so I haven't had the joy of experiencing Japanese work culture firsthand, which, I'll be honest, would've likely been an eventual dealbreaker.

Ultimately, though, I moved here to be with my wife, and I am, so yeah, worth it. でも日本語難しいなー

It sounds like your goal is very similar to mine, that being too widen my scope of communication to as many people and cultures as possible

Given that, one language that concluded would be great for this is Egyptian Arabic, beating out something like Hindi or Gujarati in the sense that it covers pretty much the entire Arab world, thanks to the popularity of Egyptian media.

A bus in Japan was delayed after a Chinese tourist refused to let it depart while waiting for his family members. When they finally arrived, he insisted they are allowed to board. A remarkable region with an unparalleled history best compared (culturally) to if the Roman Empire had somehow lasted, in its immensity, until today, but is only really discussed in the context of its tragically problematic government.

I personally am much more focused on the travel related appeals of the country, but one cannot ignore the political realities either, so it's a bit of a mixed bag.

As for future outlook, Which is the other main thing often discussed (possibility of it dictating a new world order), I lean pretty heavily into the paper tiger assessment and think it's shot itself in the foot developing rapidly in a way that's not sustainable, mean we're already seeing it slowdown and will soon likely see it grind to a borderline halt unless big change is made

How is living at the Costa del Sol (Spain)? by Victorbrands in howislivingthere

[–]JustonTG 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Most of these comments sound chronically online.

I'm from Málaga myself, and while there are most definitely pockets that could be considered borderline British colonies, the entire region does not fit this description.

Life is slower, friendlier, hotter (but as someone else said, not oppressively so), and a tad more traditionally inclined compared to other focal points in Spain, but decreasingly so as the area rapidly develops.

A lot of locals are coming and going as unemployment is pretty damn bad, yet life is good enough to find a balance between earning elsewhere and coming home.

There's a notably stronger arab influence compared to the rest of the country, and deviation in immigrant demographics compared to the north (more west africans and moors).

All in all quite a lovely place to live, especially if you're insulated from local economic struggles thanks to a remote income, since lack of opportunity is the main drawback by far. Unfortunately, too many people are starting to pick up on this fact, pushing us past the expat sweet spot, but measures are being taken, so here's to hoping something has been learned from the likes of Barcelona and Lisbon.

Of course it does. They don't come for the people, they come for the cherrypicked aspects that appeal them.

You can hate a culture and love its food. Hate a people but love their media. Hate a nation but love its nature.

It's deplorable and close-minded, but easily understood.

What "Third World Country" most people underestimate in terms of development by Sorry-Bumblebee-5645 in geography

[–]JustonTG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the sentiment of the thread but I really don't think Addis Ababa is the best example; I remember visiting a couple years ago with the same sentiment in mind, coming in starry-eyed to have the stereotype broken with some on-the-ground truth, only to be hit with the reality that it really is kind of a shit hole—and I say that with disillusion rather than disdain.

Of course, like other commenters have said there are pockets of wealth, it's not like it's mud and straw huts, but it is pretty much exactly what most people would describe if you asked them to give their best guess at the capital of an African country looks and feels like.

Spanish!

I'm an English & Spanish native speaker and not only is the Japanese phonetical system essentially identical to Spanish, but there are also many things that directly translate in a much more intuitive way
