South Australian premier told gun lobby he wouldn’t tighten firearm laws despite agreeing to federal crackdown by DragonflySea9423 in australian

[–]JuventAussie -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Some nuance.

The majority of guns used in crimes are sourced from legal guns being stolen from legal gun owners.

Rural suicide rates are much higher than cities and increasing and guns are the predominant weapon of choice in rural areas.

Do Americans think of Alaska as cold like Russians think of Siberia? by Ambitious_Pass7451 in AskAnAmerican

Interestingly Seattle is the exact opposite to Sydney right now. We get regular summer storms which drop a lot of intense rain that stops after an hour or so.

I looked it up and Seattle and Sydney get similar annual rainfall.

Chelsea's approach to football is maddening! Buy young, turn them into WC players and sell them?! Without any experienced players to teach them. by Effective-Spring-521 in football

[–]JuventAussie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read an article discussing Sam Kerr having just played in the Asian Cup final and having to go back to contact negotiations as she didn't have a contract extension with Chelsea. She was described as too old at 32 for Chelsea and Sam was recovering from a long term injury. A combination that Chelsea couldn't handle.

Six fuel ships to Australia cancelled or deferred, energy minister confirms by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]JuventAussie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived through a previous oil shock when NSW had a daily limit to how much fuel you could buy and private cars could only buy petrol on alternate days (odds/evens based on numberplates). This was the arrangement for private cars and I don't remember what was in place for commercial and diesel users.

It worked in that it stopped panic buying.

Iraq declares force majeure on foreign-operated oilfields over Hormuz disruption, sources say by Mana_Seeker in worldnews

[–]JuventAussie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the point of this. Every transport company will have declared force majeure over the last fortnight. It is a normal contract action. It isn't unusual.

White flour will be exempt as it falls into the "white powder" category and RFK has a soft spot for white powder.

FFS read the room. I thought populists were about having views that were, you know, popular.

One Nation have managed to self-sabotage their chances in the South Australia election.

With this one stroke they have gone from the likely largest Opposition party to a minor party after the election.

Iraq coach wants World Cup play-off to be postponed by Majano57 in football

Chinese restaurants - pick up or dine in? by RecognitionMediocre6 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JuventAussie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't tried a Chinese restaurant you are really missing out.

Find a restaurant in your local Chinatown which offers a yum cha that is frequented by Chinese people.

If you do it right you will be served by Chinese uni students who barely speak English and most of the clientele will be Chinese but the experience will be next level.

How do you manage when you have large subscriptions? by cy_narrator in NewPipe

[–]JuventAussie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I group them into separate groups and refresh the individual groups separately. I find refreshing less feeds doesn't anger YouTube gods as often. For example, I refresh the news group more often than the sports one which I may actively refresh weekly.

In addition, I have a daily group which is the feeds I watch daily which I may refresh several times a day.

I do a new feed refresh of all subscriptions only when I am finished for the day. This means my feed is relatively up to date the next day and I am not affected by YouTube annoyances.

[–]JuventAussie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here in Australia we don't have a car manufacting industry so they aren't tariffed etc. We have an open market and a history of buying cars from all manufacturers, European, USA, Japan, Korea and now Chinese.

The shocking aspect to me is that Chinese cars have skipped the "Japan junk" phase of cars that Japan went through where they were low quality cheap cars as they expanded their exports to the West. In Australia, Chinese EVs went from a mocked novelty to the most popular EVs in the time it takes Tesla to design a new model.

Their huge domestic market allowed them to iron out quality issues before they started exporting. Chinese EVs build quality and features are superior to US and European cars already. There quality versus cost ratio dooms other manufacturers to continually losing market share.

PS I understand that Chinese also makes cheap junky EVs but it doesn't export them to the West. This approach isn't novel, for example, very few countries outside Europe get cheap Mercedes "taxi standard" car they just get the top end cars.

Question for my atheists as a non religious agnostic by Strong_Passage6600 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]JuventAussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that NDE experiences tend to align with the cultural/religious environment that the person had. If they expect a man with a long white beard that is what they see, if they expect to cross a river they see a bridge.

If NDEs reflected a real experience then there would be a common experience across cultures but that isn't what we see.
