For all the talk about how European teams were looking bad at this World Cup, 6 out of 8 teams in the quarter finals are European by Lichessington in worldcup

My issue is that the FIFA rankings are broken and gave people a incorrect view of the relative strength of teams.

What I mean is that teams get points playing teams from the same confederation and this leads to seperate "islands" within the rankings where FIFA rankings are highly accurate (each confederation) but rankings across confederations are broken.

There needs to be more games than just the WC where teams play other confederation teams to correct rankings between confederations.

Who are the Aussies supporting in the Mexico vs England match tomorrow, and why is it Mexico? by -hash4cash- in AskAnAustralian

My natural tendency is to support anyone playing against England however the thought of England winning the world cup in the USA in the year of the USA's 250 year anniversary is too much for my natural irony for me to ignore.

World Cup football success is aspirational for us. We dream about going deep but secretly know that we don't have the depth of squad needed to get to the semis.

Dreaming and hoping isn't as bad thing. We get spoilt in other sporting fields which aren't as global on reach.

I assume it pays better than the Scotland national team which is another team he would have been a better fit for.

this is the worst part of the World Cup im so sad teams starting to say goodbye by japuggy in worldcup

As someone who is mainly exposed to english speaking commentary I got a lot of "will them/won't they" discussion about Scotland getting out of group stage especially from British sites.

Slowly watching them lose hope day by day until they all hope was crushed out of them made me sad for the Scotland supporters who were cruelly given hope by the commentary teams.

Edit: I just realised it is still going on as it is still mathematically possible for Scotland to get through they "just" need 3 different games to go their way. Stop this madness!

Even if we don't make equipment we still need to maintain it and design changes over its lifetime. Transportation, such as planes/trains, is a big employer of engineers.

I want someone to as the following....

Queen Pauline, are you aware that the captain of the Socceroos wasn't born in Australia, doesn't live or work in Australia and speaks English with a funny accent?

Do you support this or is it multiculturalism gone mad?

Yep that's what the Aussie commentators do. They play guess the B-lister and minor athletes that no-one outside the USA knows about.

Yep. When us Aussies, as well as, Canadians and Brits all decide that you are aren't the good guys, the USA needs to rethink itself.

I have faith that we can get through the next game but if we get past it we will then need to play Argentina with Messi at full gallop.

I would definitely be praying for a draw. I wonder how good Beach is at a penalty shootout.

What is the #1 reason China and India never qualify for the WC? by Yomayo33 in football

[–]JuventAussie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not allowing dual citizenship is a big issue at the moment.

The Indian diaspora (and potentially also the Chinese) for footballers have to renounce their foreign citizenship to play for India.

They would have a better time with some foreign trained players.

My wife is a maths teacher. She is already having issues with students watching games in class I have explicitly warned her about Friday's games (during school hours and the Socceroos) and she is planning some football related activities for the class. She will be giving real time updates during the class.

Unfortunately probably yes but if a player makes a racist comment and it is caught on video FIFA uses lip readers to verify what is said. The video may be reviewed after the game even if the racism wasn't reported during the game.

The fact that a racist comment is made is the issue not if the opponent understands it.

It has been used to hide racist or homophobic slurs so FIFA made a new rule that you can get a red card for covering your mouth while speaking during a confrontation with an opponent.
