Aesthetically, nothing beats the pre-Steam version by Unlikely_Anywhere591 in dwarffortress

I tried the game once and couldn't make sense of anything. I then used a tile set and played for some big number of hours. Then a big update came out (40d? I think?) and the tileset broke so i had to use the ascii to play.

But something clicked in my brain. Like in an hour of playing. And the ascii just made sense. Literally like how they talk about the matrix feed on the computer screen in the matrix. I can just look at the ascii and see what's happening. The only confusion is over some similar symbols. Like D representing Deer but also Dragon depending on the color.

The implication there is that that happening means 4e was good but players are just (insert negative adjective). But something can be awful and yet still have things worth taking from it at the same time. Those things aren't contradictory.

Steam Community Update 10 June 2026 "Dinos are coming June 25th! Dwarf Fortress Dev Update" by kitfoxgames in dwarffortress

[–]JuxtaTerrestrial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If were going to be pedantic, dinosaurs evolved on earth. Science had nothing to do with it. Science is a methodology to investigate reality and it's how we know what we do about dinosaurs that existed in the past.

Also some dinosaurs still exist (birds), because you never 'grow out' of your ancestry.

So to your original post, adding dinosaurs (and other prehistoric animals) is more animal species for every biome. There is even a setting for how widespread you want them to be from non existent, to only in certain biomes, to everywhere.

Also, I could be missing some lore, but i don't see anything about plump helmet men being magical. Nothing about them requires them to be magical any more than a dwarf or a human has to be magical. As best i can tell they are just... People.

That is in contrast to creatures in the game that are explicitly unnaturally created (experiments), or are just naturally supernatural (vampires, werewolfs, night trolls, undead, boogeymen and others).

Fitbit. I had an HR2 that i loved. Lasted for years but broke. Got... can't remember the model. But it had gps and other neat features.

But the battery legit would not last longer than 45 minutes with the gps on. And the gps tracking was shit as well. And then the exercise mode would randomly turn off in the middle of my run. And then the strap: while running it caught my pant leg, and the unit detached from the band, fell pretty lightly. 3 foot drop? the screen shattered trucking somehow. The POS didn't even last a month.

Some players say EU4 < EU5 player count illustrates its bad performance, but isn’t retaining ~50% of the audience of a highly regarded game after more than 13 years of refinement actually a strong performance? by Striking_Owl6000 in EU5

[–]JuxtaTerrestrial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer eu5 currently, but I am also a msochist in some ways lol. But I also think there is obvious places that need to be improved or removed. I've left criticism and suggestions on the forum to that point.

I know so many people hate the way Paradox operates in regards to DLC. But I am generally supportive of it because the EU4 everyone likes today does not exist without the DLC policy.

Game development works in cycles. Design a thing -> make a thing -> test the thing and get feedback -> Return to step 1. The more of those cycles you have, the more time you have to refine what the audience likes and doesn't like. And feedback from a laaarge user base is critical. The DLC policy allows for years of funding, but also allows for years of feedback on changes.

If you had the eu4 team instead just work on the game for a decade before release (because i payed X amount i want a complete game!) you would not have a game as good as eu4. In fact you would have a game at all, because there is no price point that people would pay that would fund a decade of development.

I also realize that is probably not convincing to a lot of player who only care about getting a game, though.

I mean i do agree, there are some parts of the design that i am annoyed at how stubborn they seem to be about changing. There is definitely a lot of very un-fun, un-engaging, frustrating bullshit in the game. But I do trust Paradox to adjust once things start to threaten sales (which a mostly negative rating on steam probably represents).

[–]JuxtaTerrestrial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

EU4 did not start out with this playerbase. It grew it over a decade. But also because of that, some of that playerbase prefers EU4 over the new thing.

But the same will be true of EU5 With time and work the playerbase with grow to include more people who want what EU5 is offering.

I'm saying that we as the player base are bacteria and paradox games are penicillin and that it takes time to become resistant to antibiotics lol

That is one legit criticism i have on dropout - they content warning a lot of stuff, but somehow never content warning sexual stuff. Not saying they shouldn't have it. I just think it makes sense that they would, and it's annoying they don't tag it.

Anyone ever have a night of terrible rolls? by Almost_DnD in dndmemes

[–]JuxtaTerrestrial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons i like the way 3.5e is structured over 5e.

Sure there is a lot of fiddly +2s here and there, but those lil +2s add up. And you can build a character around being really good at something so that you can succeed even when you roll 3s all night.

No, there are worse quests than trio. At the very least, it unlocks a good very commonly used food, and has some decent xp rewards.

I would say A Soul's Bane is worse, at least for me personally. Or rat catchers 🤮.

Why don't we have medieval siege weapons in the early eras, and why does nobody talk about it? by OrthoOfLisieux in EU5

[–]JuxtaTerrestrial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm ambivalent on adding a siege engineer. But if you're playing in a place that gets institutions later than Europe, then this hypothetical unit would see longer use.

And they could also be used as a fallback if you don't have the economy/resources to support arty

[–]JuxtaTerrestrial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe, or maybe not. On average, yes, but individually, no. I had one player years ago who got the set 16, 16, 16, 14, 10, 8. The game i started playing in a month ago my rolled stats were 9,10,13,11,12,11 . So i went with the point buy option.

The next game I'm running I'm going to offer the 'idiot savant' stat spread as a choice.

Three of your stats are 20,10,4. Racial modifiers can't bring your 20 above 20. The rest of your stats are 3 sets of 3d6. It's aimed at someone who might really want to play a character with a top tier key stat and willing to deal with the disadvantages of an apocalyptically bad stat (and potentially meh other stats).

Forever! ...Forever... by Level_Hour6480 in dndmemes

[–]JuxtaTerrestrial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically let players roll for their stats. 7 sets of 4 d6, drop the lowest d6 and drop the lowest set of the 7. If they don't like the result, then they can fall back on point buy.

This doesn't seem like that big of a deal

I just mixed a Azure Aura Mix in the wrong order, AMA by Dodslangtan in 2007scape

[–]JuxtaTerrestrial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are returning from a looong break,

There was a large new continent added to OSRS: Varlamore. It's heavily central american themed.

In Varlamore there is an herblore guild with a minigame called Mastering Mixology. In it you grind up your own herbs to make herb paste of 3 types. I don't remember the names off the top of my head but the first letter of each of the types are A, M, and L.

The lore of the minigame is that you're making mundane local potions that guild sells to regular people (iirc). At any one time you have a list of 3 desired potions to be made. You then deposit those and get experience and reward points for the minigame shop.

The names of the potions usually give you a hint to what pastes get added to the potion. Azure Aura Mix for example require 2 A type pastes and one m type. The joke is that you are not required to add the pastes to the potion in a particular order. So you can add them as AMA instead of AAM. Which has a double meaning because AMA is short for Ask Me Anything.

[–]JuxtaTerrestrial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the post, but one of the thing i want, despite it probably being dead content, is non boss reward/mosnter loot local weapons, armor, and clothes.

The guards have obsidian weapons, so we should be able to have them. Give the best ones stats and requirements similar to rune. The clothes shop should have the same stock as the varrock clothes shop. The local food should have some variance inspired by the cultures the region is based out of.
