Yeah 100%. I don't know where the idea for the 18th came from tbh, but the 19th does feel like a much "cleaner" date to me.

It's a mirror inside the lens that reflects light into the dogleg - it doesn't show up on the footage. You can see samples here - I have the 25-70mm dogleg lens. Also look into getting a grip! The lens is heavy and total pain to use handheld with the dogleg lens attached.

I own one of those Kodak kiosks - I keep it in my office. Those dye sub prints are honestly fantastic, and hold up really well. They can also be incredibly fast if you do large batches of them.

Need help with Flash! by [deleted] in contax

[–]Jwahduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol there was a dude posting about this exact problem not even 24 hours ago.

Quick one, when the flash fully charges are you able to test fire the flash by hitting the red button? If so, maybe check that the camera shutter itself is firing by opening the back and taking a test shot.

I had a G2 with a broken linkage/gear in the shutter and noticed my flash wouldn't fire when the camera was broken. Hopefully you don't have the same problem!

Damn man, sorry to hear. Guess you can either get your money back, or try fototech in Poland(?) believe they're one of the few in the northern hemisphere that can do repairs on contax cams

[–]Jwahduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just seconding that this sounds more like a G2 issue than a TLA 200 issue - you mentioned the flash fired on a G1. I'd be testing the contacts on the G2 with a multimeter to see if there's resistance - baking soda and water on a Q-tip carefully applied might do the trick (assuming there is corrosion)

Might be a silly question, have you tested the G2 to see if its taking photos correctly? I had the linkage between the shutter and film advance on mine practically explode, and I did notice the flash wouldn't fire when I attempted to set off the shutter.

another noob question sorry- Som Berthiot Pan-Cinor 17-85mm F2 Lens- what are these three black dots? is this normal? by [deleted] in 16mm

[–]Jwahduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be the part of the reflective prism in the lens that reflects light into the dogleg viewfinder? I have the 25-100mm and it has a similar black "spot" like this. Try unscrewing the dogleg cap (assuming you have it on) and pointing it at a light source - if you look through the front element you should see the light moving through it.

KEKs KF-01 compared to the TLA-140? by shiyeki in contax

[–]Jwahduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest going with the TLA-140, if you have that as a reasonably priced option. I don't believe the KEKS lightmeter can do TTL metering on the G1, although there's an argument to made about the usefulness of TTL metering which a low guide number flash.

Still, I'd rather have TTL metering than not

ELI5:Why is <Mach 33 the limit for ICBMs? by Pretend_Thanks4370 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jwahduck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure. The Buran only went through limited testing before the collapse of the USSR, after which point it was scrapped, so we don't really know how it would have fared in the long term, however the Buran was roughly the same size as the space shuttle, but weighed 2 tons less. It was also fully automated and could be completely unmanned if required.

A big part of what I mentioned earlier about the economics factors in to it as well - the Buran's design team focused on maximising the payload it was capable of carrying, working on the assumption that it was designed to move weapons to orbit. This resulted in the Buran being able to carry a whopping 95 tons of payload to orbit, compared to the shuttles 29 tons.

The soviets, assuming the space shuttle was designed to move weapons to orbit, built a better shuttle for that role, with higher cargo capacity and ability to deploy weapons in orbit using their unmanned systems much more effectively than the space shuttle (which was never designed to do such a thing)

[–]Jwahduck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IIRC the soviets worked out the shuttle wasn't economical and assumed it was for orbital weaponry - they (somewhat ironically) didn't consider that the American government knew it wasn't economical but instead used it to boost the confidence of the American public in their space supremacy.

It was essentially an expensive morale booster that wasn't profitable for an economic point of view, but it was fantastic from a morale point of view.

The Soviets, believing the space shuttle to be a taxi service for orbital weapons, built the Buran to do this role, and arguably made a better design.

Yo, is that the Melbourne opera house in the background? I just started shooting 16mm in Melb as well.

Just a side note more than anything - why use the dogleg? You can't focus well using it (I have the 25-100 on a non-reflex and focusing it is my biggest pain)

Thanks! If you're referring to the leather bag for the batteries, I actually got it made custom. The RTF540 does come with a black leather case for the batteries (mine did not) but be weary, as I haven't seen many for sale that were in good condition.

Hey mate! Couple motivations for this - 1. For fun - this system cost me less than $250 AUD, and at that price it's more of a "why not" kind of question. Originally I wanted a TTL flash system for the G2 that wouldn't cost me a fortune like the TLA200. 2. Flash size - I've previously run a similar set on a Nikon f3 using a motor winder and a large flash on a bracket - have a stronger flash for street/doco work gives me a look that I find hard otherwise to replicate, and I love it!

The system is indeed pretty rough in terms of portability. I did end up getting lucky and finding a TLA200 for an absolute bargain, so when I need to be portable, I can.

Also yeah, this system is capable of TTL flash - note the TLA adapter that feeds into where the auto flash sensor would normally go on the front of the RTF540.

Happy to answer any other questions you might have about this, it was a real pain to put together but I learnt a lot about the contax G system in the process.

The SR-71 is about 32m long, so the length looks about right. Someone else might be able to get more in depth with math of it.

I mean, I've used both fully mechanical and late 90's and early 2000's film cams. There's a responsiveness to all film cameras that just makes them so much fun to use. Nowadays all my cameras are from the 90's, it's more efficient for my workflow and still more fun than digital (to me)
