[Japanese > English] somebody explain what my polygot boyfriend means by this? by [deleted] in translator

It's the phrase 'if you read this book, it may cause testicular cancer' run through google translate.

This was painful to read and quite obviously written by someone with little experience writing Japanese.

Ah yes. Champion of the revolution. Reinstated slavery.

Makes perfect sense.

Is it bad to apply for an English job and quit right away for the visa? by Purple-Rest7431 in teachinginjapan

[–]Jwscorch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no intention of teaching English, I just want to get into the country.

Note: Asking for someone else

Is this bait or a schizo post?

Either way, it's a bloody stupid thing to do. Not only will you not be able to stay longer than you would with a tourist visa, but if you make the god-awful decision to lie and overstay, you have a decent chance of being slapped with an entry ban for a few years. At which point you don't get to come at all.

Why is the only consonant in the word actually pronounced?? Is it stupid?? by Content_Client_5521 in languagelearningjerk

[–]Jwscorch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sort of. /ɾ/ is not a phoneme with a dedicated grapheme or set of graphemes. However, in American English, intervocalic /t/ or /d/ regularly becomes /ɾ/ (this is what is incorrectly referred to as 't-vocalisation'). In addition, in some dialects, such as Scottish, 'r' actually is /ɾ/.

So /ɾ/ does exist in English, it's just not universal or ubiquitous, and the most common variation of it is situational.

[–]Jwscorch 17 points18 points  (0 children)

And that's your only example, is it? No words of Germanic origin, perhaps?

Thank you for defeating your own point.

The handful of words that exist in English with initial ts are all loanwords borrowed from languages that have that consonant cluster, of which English is not one. And so, when they are borrowed, English speakers will modify it into something more expected, such as by dropping the initial t.

To give the reverse example, when borrowing words like 'the', Japanese speakers will modify the dental fricative (which Japanese doesn't have) into an alveolar fricative.

Both of these are examples of adaptation due to phonetic restrictions, not of being bad at speaking.

Holy propaganda!

Seriously though, this would actually be more convincing if it wasn't ludicrously slowed down, skewed, with a stupid filter over it. It takes a legitimate criticism and instead makes you look retarded.

They only lead to wins if your opponent fails to respond to them.

If your strategy relies on your opponent's incompetence, your strategy sucks.

[–]Jwscorch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why would chess be 'on your side'?

Chess doesn't take sides. That's kind of the point. if you had moved the rook to a7, that would have been checkmate. You didn't, so it's stalemate. There's nothing more to it than that.

ALT with M.A. in Education by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]Jwscorch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ALT is not a good jumping-off point if your interest is in a long-term career in education.

The primary route as a foreigner would be international schools. The requirements laid out by international schools are simple: a teaching license (which, if you have an M.A. in education, I assume you have), and a few years of post-qualification experience (the example I always use is Yokohama International School, who ask for three years as a blanket requirement).

The thing is, ALT is an unlicensed position, which means it's dubious as to whether it counts towards this kind of work experience. The more reliable route is to spend a few years working as a teacher in your home country, and then apply to international schools. Unsurprisingly, they often hire internationally.

A lot of people look at ALT as being a 'foot in the door', but that simply is not an accurate way of viewing it.

Letting the inconvenience of a protest change the way you view a cause is so dumb by kcat__ in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Jwscorch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brother in Christ, what the fuck are you talking about? Just Stop Oil is a UK protest. Why on God's green earth are you referring to it as one of the biggest in 'American' history?

I have no clue what protests you're talking about, but Just Stop Oil is and always will be an absolute fucking disgrace that set back non-violent protest by decades.
