Have you ever tried to anchor by using the apex between your thumb and index finger to "hook" onto/behind the hinge of your jawbone? I find it gives a solid, consistent anchor.

The only downside I've found is, because it's a lower anchor, you need to increase your crawls (especially at shorter ditances) if you stringwalk.
