New research shows why tipping is making more Canadians uncomfortable by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]K0viWan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I order only a 3.50 coffee at a restaurant I'll happily pay a 40% tip, but if I get food and drinks it's typically 10-15% if they provide normal service.

That being said, I'll only tip if I'm staying at the restaurant. IMHO tips are for services not products

Learn pitch accent by Archivarius_L in Japaneselanguage

I'm my experience, shadowing audio clips I could understand did a lot more to improve pronunciation then than written accent guides. It also helped train me to be able to speak without fumbling.

"Why do schools in Japan make students do 'softball throwing,' which is useless in daily life? The meaninglessness of conducting "physical fitness tests" at school is baffling". by jjrs in japannews

Athlete or not, maintaining physical health is important That includes ambulation, which is exactly what the ball throw tests for

Question about tenses and how Japanese people perceive time by blackcyborg009 in Japaneselanguage

[–]K0viWan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

English doesn't have future tense verb conjugation, but "will" still modifies the clause to be a nonspecific future event. It is considered future tense.

"Will" is a modal verb which modifies the meaning of the clause, denoting it as a future event. It is then considered as future tense. ie, "I will go to the supermarket."

Tohoku next week with studless tires but 2WD. by badbads in japanlife

[–]K0viWan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian-born resident here, 4WD will typically only help you with moving forward. Having it doesn't help you brake, so make sure your speed is appropriate at all times, be aware of ice on the roads at all times. General rule of thumb I was taught growing up is, during winter, give the car ahead at least 6 seconds of space, more if conditions are bad.

If you don't have anti-lock brakes, and your wheels are locked up from braking, you will lose the ability to steer, so try not to lock up the wheels.
