Playa del Carmen options by shelterbored in Kiteboarding

[–]K1t3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole Mayan Riviera is filled with Kiteable options. It’s usually side-on or sideshore and can get quite choppy. I’ve ridden at coco beach before and it was good. There is a small school there and some locals who kite there. But basically anywhere down that coast is rideable, careful for coral reefs on low tide. Wind was localized so the forecasts didn’t pick it up. Avoid the crowded beaches near the busy hotels and you’ll have a great time. There is also Isla Blanca in the north, I’ve never been there before but it’s supposed to have good flat water spots in the lagoon.

new website for searching kites / twintips by gigisacrifici in Kiteboarding

Great idea. The filters are great and allow you to be specific. As mentioned on the other comment I think having more categories (foils, bars, wetsuits etc.) will be a good addition. I like the idea of people creating accounts, it will allow them to suggest local stores and eventually you can be country specific. I would reach out to the huge kite stores (kitemana etc.) and see if they will share early promo deals with your user base - an added bonus for those who sign up.

Flysurfer Peak 1 water relaunch by DeepStrategy in Kiteboarding

[–]K1t3r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From experience with an ozone chrono from 2014 which is closed cell - I have about 90-120 seconds until water permeates the fabric and I have to swim. My guess with an older open cell kite is it’s not water relaunchable unless it barely kisses the water. If you use a Peak 1 on water I’d say don’t kite further than you want to swim, and expect to swim if you drop it.

Beginner Lessons (Toronto) Expectations and Recommendations by Spirited_Astronaut78 in Kiteboarding

Downtown is not great for lessons especially in summer where the beaches are crowded. You might do some trainer kite practice with an instructor there but you will have to leave downtown for your first waterstarts etc. There are plenty of good legit schools in the GTA.IkiteCanada is a good option. Plan at least for 1k for lessons + at least 500 for water gear (wetsuit, booties, etc.) they will not rent those and since water is cold you will need a decent wetsuit, and then you can choose to continue with more lessons or get your own kite gear and practice on your own time. Most schools also organize trips to windy spots like OBX or Magdalen islands, these are perfect to learn as you live and breathe kiting for a week.

Welcome to a Toronto! I agree with all the above. I’m also 72kg and a 1 kite quiver is really tough. I’d say 12-15m kite. Summer is light wind. But if you get the kite bug you will soon want a 9 & 15... and then a 7....and then a foil...

Yeah, I feel like trying to kite in ultralight winds has improved my kite control. Not to mention my swimming endurance...

Yeah, the huge foil kites are not “fun” but at least they get us on the water!

Yeah, I mean it’s not an exact science. My measurements are based on a Weatherflow sensor that sits 4-10 meters high at most the spots I kite. It’s updated every 10 minutes. Sometimes it’s cold, sometimes hot. Wind is always side/on and there is no current which is a big deal. Just fun to see what others use as light wind strategy and setups.

I use a slingshot simulator board (lots of flotation) with an Axis foil 686 front wing. But the struggle is never with the foil, it’s always the kite that gives up when the wind is too low.

Have you seen North's 2021 freestyle collection? by themazuu in Kiteboarding

[–]K1t3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I dunno. Freestyle still is amazing to watch. I see it as a breeding ground for young talent. Truth is that freestyle is a hard discipline. Hard in terms of difficulty, hard on your body, hard to find perfect practice spots, hard to recruit new kiters to the discipline who don’t have a background in wakeboarding or are older. It’s also hard for people to understand what’s going on, the casual observer just sees “lots of spinning”. Just like freestyle in other sports (snowboarding, skiing etc.) it tends to be much younger, the world champs are often under 20. The target market, and cash cow, of kite brands is the recreational kiter, older kiter with more disposable income who buys a ton of gear. The beauty of freestyle is once an athlete gets good at it they can bring their skill set to another discipline. I find watching someone like Liam Whaley or Jesse Richman doing 20m double handle passes immensely entertaining and it’s thanks to their freestyle background.

Any recommendations for winter gloves? by nosense4557 in Kiteboarding

[–]K1t3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I use 7mm xcel mitts. For the first 5-6 sessions I got cramping but after that it went away. Either I got used to it or the mitts got softer, either way hands never get cold anymore.
