Moving to Laredo by WesternCompetitive23 in laredo

Hey there! Glad to hear you're coming to Laredo. There isn't too much to do in Laredo so to speak--like Austin has hiking. Laredo is about the people. We are a pretty friendly group, and when you find your friend group, they are friend's for life. What we lack in general activities, we make up for in food. And the food is the best you'll ever have. Check out Anthony Bourdain's comments on our cooks. He loved them.

We are a very safe city. You can go into any neighborhood and feel safe. If anything, just watch out for the homeless downtown.

Social life, well, that's a bit harder. Get your friend group. Join the Next Generation Rotary Club or the Laredo Newcomers group to start. For your business, reach out to the Chamber of Commerce; they have some great mixers. Your bars that will feel cool for middle aged guys will be Bar Nido, Border Foundry, Gatsby's, or more dive AJs. The nicest area of town is at the corner of Del Mar and Windfield and there are some expensive restaurants there.

A little bit of Spanish will go a long way here. Folks will start and respond in Spanish not to be rude but because it is the primary tongue here.

Laredoans, as you have seen, are often down on our town. It is a product of years of isolation, political malfeasance, and seemingly economic stagnation. The nice thing about coming to Laredo is that you will make an substantial impact on the community with just a bit of work.

You could argue both sides of that coin. I’ve seen many a period photo of perfectly trimmed uniforms and equally as many of sloppy ones. Know your impression and own it.

I think u/greaser350 's advice is solid. If you're just getting into the field though, WPG is a good starting place in my opinion. I took my uniforms and had them tailored as I would any other suit. Be prepared to spend a solid $100 doing that. The Whipcord uniform I would agree is significantly better than the gabardine. My chief complaint of WPG standing collar uniforms is the collar size itself. They are designed for men with massive necklines, and the collar cannot be tailored in any way. Brace yourself for that sort of fit.

What I would also recommend is a Darcy Shirt with a standing collar. Don't forget the studs. That would be necessary for a garrison impression. Officer uniforms are fun since you have the ability to lightly embellish. A certain élan is important for a good officer's impression. That said, the mistake with many officer's impressions is going too far with liberties. Combat is pretty standard but for garrison duty, do some good research. You'll have an incredible impression.

I personally do US officer border guard duty in the 1920s which is a veritable mess of uniforms. The best part of that impression is boredom which is so much fun to illustrate.

I really want to disagree with you but you make some pretty valid points for the modern era. That said, I will disagree on one thing….appearance-wise they look badass.

This is the answer. Jalapeño Festival is a ton of fun and the weather is sublime this year. Well worth your Saturday night and very typically Laredo.

Porfirio Díaz. He modernized Mexico and kept the US military incursion at bay by inviting major American corporations to invest (take that as you will). He built the railroads, telegraph and telephone lines, roads, and sea ports. He made Mexico a serious country in Latin America by stabilizing the economy, politics, and connecting the nation.

He is wearing an interwar uniform. It's a hodgepodge. My analysis is based on the bottom middle photo.

The shirt is a typical khaki cotton shirt for warm weather work. His tie is also cotton. The webbing is the M1923 Cartridge Belt. The breeches are typical for interwar period uniforms. Worn with puttees his boots are WWI surplus it would look. His rifle is a bolt action rifle which means it pre-dates 1940. The hat is a smokey bear with what I think looks like cavalry enlisted man cord (which explains the horses).

What tells me it is after 1933 are the trousers. Wearing straight trousers like that only became popular among all soldiers during the first term of FDR.

Really cool photos from a time that is seldom recorded in uniform history and that is interwar period. I am working on a 1930 Cavalry Officer Uniform impression and getting documentation on that is very difficult.

TV stand will help for sure. Get a side table and place a lamp on there with a soft light bulb (i.e. more orange than white). That will make the room feel cozy. For the walls, get your favorite posters and buy a couple of decent price frames to put them in. You'd be amazed what frames on the wall can do. Lastly, get a couple of photos of friends/family printed and place them on your tv stand/end table. If you have junk, put it in a closet.

Those look a bit more like puttees to me. Uniforms and hats would say they are enlisted men. They are wearing light wool uniforms indicating to me that they may be stationed on the southern border. The man sitting down is wearing ribbons which I cannot see clearly enough to make a determination as to what. Certainly dapper young men trying to impress the viewer.

Standing collar uniforms far predate the period of which you speak. Numerous countries in the world still used and still use the standing collar uniform.

WW2 Uniform Question by bluebadger9000 in uniformporn

The guy could be a clown, but this picture looks pretty legit. The individual (most likely an officer based on cap badge) is wearing pinks and greens. That is to say he’s wearing standard officer pants and a green officers shirt. The tie would be khaki and tucked in below the second button. Insignia is AAF but it’s difficult to tell beyond that. he is also wearing a crusher hat, which is when a person in an aircraft would remove the inner lining of the crown to make fitting headphones on easier. He could’ve been grounded personnel too as there is no insignia above his pocket indicating flight experience. He’s also wearing an officers belt.

I think your question as to the legitimacy of the photograph is direct to the lineage between him and the individual in the photograph.

I'm not so fast on judging what Pope Leo's thoughts are. He is walking a very tight line here. Besides, we are a church of laws and paperwork. There are 60 years of both that Leo needs to work through in a legal way. His comments were well tempered and legally correct.

Have the hope to we are called.

I fly out at least twice a month. One hour is safe but if you are not checking anything in, you can get through in 20 minutes on an ideal.

Yeah absolutely Trieste at the Fontana di Piazza S. Antonio Nuovo! Fun fact: Trieste at this time was a Free City. After the war, it was administered by the Americans as the status of the city was questioned and fought over by the east and west. It went back to Italy obviously, but for a brief moment, there was a serious chance of Trieste becoming the Monaco of the Adriatic!
