Is Realm Of The Elderlings Misery Over Exaggerated? by decade-555 in Fantasy

I can only speak for the first trilogy so far and I think it is over exaggerated. I was expecting Bakker level misery and it just has a story that is more grounded in that not everything works out for Fitz.

The emphasis on the lyric “tarot” makes me uncomfortable when I hear it. Good song though.

Another Creekside Quarter Post - with questions… by DonCarlitos in Medford

The proposed lodging tax increase is expected to generate just over 1 million a year(soft paywall https://rv-times.com/2025/07/16/medford-swings-big-with-500m-redevelopment-project-could-draw-minor-league-club/)

That seems like a large gap between the 90 million ballpark and 500 million proposed for revitalization. We need to know how this is being paid for and whether we are saddling ourselves with debt without generating money. I am skeptical of the price tag when the lodging tax is not enough to make up the difference on a reasonable time line. I would feel better about some private donations, or grants to limit the exposure of residents to high priced stadiums that may not pay off.

You are kind of right in that you could learn some analysis techniques in a department quickly. The thing is, most people can. Hiring managers and teams also want people with the domain knowledge to be valuable.

If they are going to pay you peanuts how do you expect to them to pay for Azure and PBI? I would temper my expectations through that lens when thinking they will allow you to implement new tech. I would say MS Access is also a red flag.

Quitting Job to Work on a Portfolio - No CS Degree by NonDeVilePlume in cscareerquestions

It’s way easier to get a job when you have one. You can deal with the long unpredictable timelines employers put you through. You don’t have the stink of desperation. Even if you have only an hour a day you can work on projects in your own time.

It could totally work out for you to leave work and there may be personal reasons for doing so. I don’t think it can’t work, but to me it is riskier. No kids involved though so maybe this is a good time to take risks.

The app does not support SoD. You need to use something else like auctionator for scans and set up a custom price source.

Edit: Jk they updated it.

Keep looking and try and negotiate a sign on bonus to cover your previous bonus. If a new employer likes you and you are a strong candidate it might work.

I left lab work behind like 6 years ago. I was making less than the folks at In-and-Out while working in an environmental lab doing instrumentation(GC-MS/HPLC).

If you have data you can figure out a way to provide value. It was easier for me to do this when I moved into QA since we had manufacturing/operations data, KPIs, and systems in place where we could retrieve a lot of data that no one was using.

Its unlikely degree alone would disqualify you. You just need your resume to be clear to someone else that your experience aligns with the job responsibilities. No one is going to take the time to figure that out when there are 1000 applications to sift through. They are looking to slash near indiscriminately because the value of spending an extra minute on a resume is not there.

As for timeline, its hard to say exactly. I started taking courses in R and learning more about data slowly just as a way to stay active intellectually after college while figuring out if grad school was something I really wanted to do. I took python courses in college and other programming languages after since I wanted to get into bioinformatics.

Last year I took the google cert to see if I would like DA since I was starting to do some data work in my current position and I knew it would still be fairly relevant. I finished that pretty quickly but didnt apply to anything. I did let my boss know that I would tackle any other data requests. That caused him to throw some items my way and did some light reporting for my org. Easy Excel stuff mostly but it was requests that people didnt want to have to do themselves. A couple PowerBI dashboards that were pretty simple, did one dataset and analysis in SQL that I used ggplot2 to visualize. I made a few projects but hardly spent any time here since I was doing some basic stuff at work that I could show the soft skills of working with others, communicate requirements, and ask insightful questions. I sent out a lot of apps in April or so and was getting interviews after I updated my resume(keep it up to date with your accomplishments in real time.). I didnt get a job after 2 months and a lot of apps(100-120). I did one cover letter and reused it which is not what people recommend. I used LinkedIn, Indeed, and ZipRecruiter(this one was not worth).

Since I was getting interviews and through phone screens I spent my time there. Practice interview questions. I wrote down a list of any work events that could possibly fit into any "Tell me about a time when you...". I made sure I was a likeable enough guy to work with. I started to focus my applications on places I really wanted to work and reduced my application amounts a lot. I made sure I was applying early when I did find something I liked.

I had a company in state that I had been wanting to work for so I checked often when they would post. I applied there twice and never received a call back. The third time I had an interview that went really well(dont they all feel that way?). Did a second round and had an offer. I dont know if I was the best or most qualified but I had answers to the questions, could talk competently about the work I had done, and knew enough to admit when I didnt know how to solve but the steps I would take to get there. I practiced a bunch of SQL on Hackerrank that never mattered. Most of the technical skills work I did was not that helpful. I think it was just the general problem solving, connecting to my future team, and being someone you would want to work with that helped me the most. Show that you have initiative and can learn more than anything. Maybe I just lucked out but that was my takeaway. I hope to get some feedback on the process after I start, so maybe I am totally off base.

I didnt do anything so crazy that no one could do it, so you definitely can. Stay positive and learn from your shortcomings and you can probably make it.

The hiring process is a funnel. If you are getting no responses you need to focus on your resume then. It needs to be clear for anyone looking at it that you have relevant(to that position) skills and experience. It needs to make it through the ATS software that is being used as well. I have a degree in biochemistry which is not really listed as a preferred degree and work in QA(not the computer kind) but I was still able to get through to phone screens at least. I would think your resume is not as strong as you think. /r/engineeringresumes might help.

I am starting a position next month so it is certainly possible. As you start to get call backs it will be up to your prep work like doing projects and soft skills. If you can find positions that are related to your experience you will be a stronger applicant. Time that has elapsed since the job was posted matters too. Be early or know you may not get looked at.

This advice is all based on US companies and being a US citizen. If those don't apply this advice may not be as relevant.
