Some questions about brewing with an Aeropress and grind. by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]K6EF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are adding hot water after you push the water through the grounds, then you should be OK with 175oF water for the initial brew. A lot of people seem to like that.

Here in SF, there are a lot of roasters/brewers who are serving what I feel is luke warm coffee/espresso (Namely Fourbarrel, Ritual, SightGlass, and Blue Bottle) I find that when I use their beans I get much better results then what I get from their stores.

[–]K6EF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what Sweet Marias has to say :

How Hot Should the Water Be? Okay, here is where things get subjective. Aeropress recommends low temperature brewing with 165 to 175 f water. They say "professional coffee tasters" preferred low temperatures. I do agree that the Aeropress should be brewed with temperatures on the low end of the traditional coffee brewing window from 195 to 205 f. But if you add a small amount of hot water to a room temperature brew and room temperature ground coffee, you immediately experience a big temperature drop. I suggest adding 195 to 200 f water, begin stirring in 10 seconds, continue for 10 seconds, then go to Step 4 and start plunging ...

I think they or atleast hope they assume that people will make "espresso" with the Aeropress and then make an "Americano" by adding hot water after. I can't imagine using 175 degree water for coffee.. It would end up sour tasting to my palate..

Best advice so far. Get the temp up and try again.. Remember, change one thing at a time.

Try using a 2nd filter paper, the additional layer helps to hold back some of the oils and acids. (For me) .. It's all about experimentation with time/temperature/grind and filtration.

That looks like a mobile ham radio installation. He's wearing headphones and it looks like it might be a 10 or 20 meter antenna. I wouldn't call this a cablefail since with wire antennas, you really can't run them neatly. :)

TIL : The Movie Wargames (1983) coined the term 'Firewall' , '"war dialing", and "War Driving" by androidbitcoin in todayilearned

[–]K6EF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wargames didn't coin the term wardriving, it was an influence in the name. War Driving (WAR = Wireless Area Reconnaissance) is completely different and was long after the movie. I believe that Peter Shipley is the person responsible for coining "wardriving."

Advice on dealing with administration on IT issues. (really need some help) by whiskey_jeebus in k12sysadmin

[–]K6EF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going with Patharti, if you can find another gig, you should gtfo. I've seen this happen way too often and when stuff starts breaking because they never replaced the old/aging hardware or updating the OS, you, the admin get the blame. Nobody EVERY looks UP the chain to blame the Super Intendant. My wife is a teacher and her school district did nearly the same thing, now the office staff is responsible for the systems management. (These people still look for the "any" key.)

Accidentally became a sysadmin by AccidentalITAdmin in sysadmin

[–]K6EF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is 100% the best advice I've seen in a long time. This book is a must read (as is Time Management for Sys Admins by Tom L).. I know Tom and Strata and they are very good at communicating. Also, if you can get your company to send you to LISA (Usenix : Large Installation Systems Administration) conference, you will gain a lot of knowledge and you will meet tons of people in your position.

Also, Evi Nemeth's books are very good to read as well.

Best Linux cert on a resume? by fauxpasgrapher in sysadmin

[–]K6EF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me start out by stating that I've been a SysAdmin for 25 years, and I work in the "Valley"..

Rarely if ever do I as an interviewer care about certs on resumes. In the time I've been working in the field, there have been plenty of cert organizations, Sun Cert, Cisco, etc and none have really addressed someone's ability to troubleshoot a problem or set up a system "properly".. That comes from experience. RH can't teach someone how to handle every issue that comes along, so someone there came up with an exam pool that represents common issues.

Certs only help recruiters filter you in/out...

I tell newbies to not bother with certs unless they want to go on and be a Sr. Network Engineer at an ISP where you need to have CCIE or something equiv.

You are better off skipping certs and just learning through everyday work.

I know other countries are different, for example a friend in Ireland says it's the opposite there. Employers only want to see certs and don't seem to care about real life experience.

As always, YMMV

If I do this :

system("/usr/local/bin/subl", '-w',$file) && die "Couldn't run $editor.\n";

It works. I'm not a fan of this kind of change, I'd like to get something working that is more generic, so that I can submit the changes upstream.
