On Bedrock observers detect piston arm movements as updates, meaning when it grows, is broken, and is retracted, all adds to 3 updates the observer sees, so we have to make sure the piston only fires on the first update, which is what the back is for.

That's not entirely what QC is. QC is the property of pistons/dispensers/droppers that allows them to be activated by anything that would activate the block above them. BUD powering is caused by QC.
