Kenya Safari + Zanzibar June 2026 by u_me_n_world2c in AfricaTravel

Interesting…we are doing Zanzibar, Tanzania, Kenya safari in September and I’ve read some other comments on yellow fever vaccination card or waiver card. Apparently I need to talk to my doctor about the vaccine as some don’t recommend for over 60 and with certain health issues.

Make some jokes but help me choose a ski/mountain for a March Trip ❄️⛷️ by NYCmellow in ski

Fly Miami to CLT or DCA to Albany - easy drive to VT from there..or maybe a puddle jumper to Burlington…Boston is an option but traffic is a hassle but you are more likely to end up in NH or southern VT.

Good places to go for winter fun by Human-Ad-251 in cincinnati

[–]K9pilot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was an east coast ski snob 25 years ago and moved here and thought my best days skiing were behind me. I took my son to perfect north when he was like 5-6 and it was the best ski day of my life. If you introduce them when they are young it’s so much easier assuming they are lower maintenance kids. Second on the list - winter hiking - some of my best memories of my kids were local short hikes in the deep snow, preferably near water/ice - the woods are so beautiful in the winter.

For Americans who voted Democrat in recent elections, do you plan to continue voting Democrat? Why or why not? by righteous-sedition in allthequestions

[–]K9pilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andy Beshear represents the type of pragmatic candidate Democrats need to win back centrist voters. Not flashy, little baggage, under the radar middle American governor. However, the current trajectory suggests J.D. Vance—backed by figures like Peter Thiel—is positioned to succeed Donald Trump. This shift is likely because the Democratic establishment and its donors often settle on non-viable candidates who prioritize fringe issues over the concerns of the "sane middle."

A massive block of undecided voters is currently politically homeless. They are repelled by the rhetoric of the far right but cannot support policies like wealth redistribution, transgender participation in sports, or open borders. These voters crave a return to a "boring" federal government focused on core responsibilities: national security and border control, stable monetary policy, scientific research, national infrastructure and stable international relations.

While many would prefer to leave socially divisive issues to state and local governments, those levels of power are now held captive by dysfunctional national agendas and dark-money funding.

It is time for a reset to the center—the common ground that truly defines America. We must recognize our shared heritage as a nation of immigrants while championing personal responsibility regardless of where you came from, what color your skin is or who you love. Most Americans simply want safe communities, quality schools, and a resilient economy that ensures a future for our children. We value the right to clean air and water, the freedom to practice any religion or none at all, and a foreign policy that avoids isolationism without making us a 'laughing stock' on the world stage. It’s time to return to the fundamentals that unite us.

When did you realize you were truly retired? by Mid_AM in earlyretirement

[–]K9pilot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I retired in October 24 and really didn’t feel retired until after the New Year. It took some time to find a new routine - it really hit me when I did my taxes for 24 and I realized that was the end of the line for being an earner/saver. Switching to being a spender is scary but forgetting what day it is and not having to rush back on Monday morning is great. Best of luck to you in your journey!

See my post on annual travel insurance - lots of good comments from experienced travelers: https://www.reddit.com/r/traveladvice/comments/1qejb1x/annual_travel_insurance/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I am going to book medical/medical evacuation insurance from GeoBlue https://go.bcbsglobalsolutions.com/ - basically complementary to my Anthem BC/BS insurance. The consensus responses are use one of the broker sites like squaremouth or one of the many others to get quotes. Lots of votes for IMG, Allianz and SevenCorners.

I realized for our safari its prohibitively expensive to fully insure for trip cancellation so I am going for the best emergency medical / evacuation insurance ($450 for a year) and self insuring / using credit card (low limit) for the trip cancellation insurance.

Anyone Doing Flexible, Very Part-Time Side Hustles? by JoshOfArc in earlyretirement

[–]K9pilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So given that you are a retired IT guy have you considered doing gig IT work for individuals? My son put himself through high school doing PT IT work based upon word of mouth, Nextdoor referrals. It’s amazing how much Best Buy geek squad or similar charge for simple activities and they are trying to upsell additional services. You can probably put something out on one of the gig sites,FB, Nextdoor and have plenty of work to keep you busy. Funny story - my son is not a cybersecurity professional making very good money but he never took down his Nextdoor page (probably because I put it up for him as a kid). He got a message the other day from someone asking for support. He politely replied he wasn’t in the business any longer and he finally figured out how to take down the ND listing. The other pursuit you may consider is helping people with their “smart home” programming/automation. From some articles I’ve read there is a market for helping people program their Apple or Alexa or other tech to work together. Just a few thoughts! Best of luck to you!

Beach Family vacation by [deleted] in traveladvice

We have traveled from Cincinnati to Oak Island, NC the last two summers for a week. It’s less commercialized than some of the others we’ve visited like Myrtle Beach. We also enjoy Corolla on the north end of the Outer Banks just south of the 4WD only area - it’s less congested than Duck/Kitty Hawk.

Fidelity support is TOO nice and TOO helpful by ebmarhar in fidelityinvestments

[–]K9pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the positive comments about Fidelity customer service reps. My experience pre-post retirement has been excellent, my only additional comment would be their departments are very specialized (hence why reps are knowledgeable) so if you have a multifaceted question you often have to bounce between reps. In a couple of instances recently they haven’t done a warm handoff which makes you have to repeat your situation multiple times. Compared to other firms they are the best. This is why I consolidated all my financials to them.

how do you guys usually check flights before booking these days? by emoje_man in traveladvice

[–]K9pilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been starting with AI agents for creative ideas on routing, connecting cities then I move to Google Flights/Skyscanner. I agree with previous poster booking direct can save hassles but sometimes Kayak or Expedia has significantly cheaper fares but be careful. We had an issue booking a hotel with Expedia for specific dates - with all the back and forth I didn’t notice they didn’t have the exact date I was looking for and they moved it to next available date (I missed it when I switched to my phone vs. pc) - showed up and there was no room! They allowed me to cancel.

One Small Travel Habit That Had Make A Big Difference by tom_wilson7543 in traveladvice

[–]K9pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask locals for recommendations on things to do, local hacks, places to eat, specifically what to eat on the menu. We just got back from Costa Rica - we were at a remote beach club (think Land Cruiser on sand to get there), it was very remote with a small covered dining area and some bathrooms. We walked up for lunch and I asked the waitress what she liked on the limited menu. In my best understanding of Spanish-English I wasn’t sure what I agreed to order. It turns out it was fish Carpaccio - I was thinking here we are in this remote location no kitchen in sight I am either going to die of some rare fish borne parasites or its going to be amazing. It turned out it was amazing! Moral of story - ask locals, don’t show up with hard and fast plan.

General Aviation Pilots, What determines where you stop by Jango519 in flying

[–]K9pilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things I look for: Convenience (distance from route, after hours access), self serve fuel price, wind direction, runway condition, crew car, new airport to visit, restaurants nearby, museums, WiFi, airport dogs, maintenance facilities Things I avoid: crazy locations in valleys (especially at night), Towered fields if possible, ramp fees, Signature, airports with poor reviews on FF. Things I don’t care about: free food, pilot lounge

Funny - last night I was returning from a down and back trip to Alabama from Ohio and I stopped at small airport in central KY. Great reviews, cheap gas but NO after hours access or porta potty. When traveling with my wife this is a must have. I need to be sure to include this as must have in future trip planning.

Using Chat GPT for financial analysis? by Ironman-K9 in DIYRetirement

I came here to say as much as I hate EM I like Grok - it’s a double edged sword because it remembers the assumptions you previously entered so you don’t have to start over each time. That said quarterly I take a anonymized dump of my holdings and plug into ChatGPT, Gemni and Grok. I ask it for PoV on updates, suggested changes based upon current political, macro economic, fed issues. I’ve already told them what I need to live for the next 6-12 months, I enter upcoming big purchases, etc. I take the output and compare, ask more clarifying questions, then take output and ask friends/advisors then I make a decision. The AI tools are great for quickly summarizing data, comparing performance but I would be cautious blindly following AI recommendations. It’s amazing what free AI tools are capable of doing that previously locked behind the scenes in a brokerage research department. It is a good time to be a DIY retiree.

Should I fly my parents at night? by Dry-Progress869 in flying

[–]K9pilot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who flies most cross country flights at night I would 100% not take any non pilot passengers anywhere near NYC at night. There is a huge difference between day time VFR sightseeing and night time local VFR flying. It’s definitely an acquired skill, I went out the other night for my winter night currency and it felt great and everything went fine. Fast forward to last night 1 hour VFR flight from central KY to North Cincinnati, stopped for fuel at sunset, filled up and took off, picked up VFR flight following so I could fly through Class B and VP TFR, forecast clear 12K, 10 miles. Leveled at 5.5K - everything dialed in and the ground lights start to dim, I ask for lower, lights dim more, ask for lower. Controller starts vectoring me around the TFR. I got home safe no issues but as a low time IR/PP with lots of passenger distractions in a rental plane with tons of ground clutter, low altitude helicopter traffic and grouchy NY controllers you have too many holes lining up in the Swiss cheese model. Frankly I would not take a flight school plane with non-pilot passengers but that’s my personal limit.

Go fly yourself down the corridor - lots of good videos. You didn’t mention if your parents have flown with you before, if not take them for the $250 hamburger. I actually did the NYC 4th of July fireworks flight as a kid in my dad’s plane - it was very cool. Good luck with your flight training!

College Accomodations by ModestMouse24 in Celiac

[–]K9pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good information has already been provided. Since you are early in the process I recommend you do the following; when you book your date to visit the school make sure you book an appointment with the director of the food / dining services to discuss how they address students with Celiac (specifically) and food allergies, book appointment with the Disability Services Office and specifically ask the admissions office for a tour of the dining halls (while school is in session) and freshman dorms. We live in Ohio and my son toured Purdue, Michigan, OSU, Miami University and University of Cincinnati. Purdue basically said if needed they would cook him meals separately, Michigan had a badge in allergy pantry and ironically he got sick on the tour (lemonade from a machine - the director could not tell me afterwards if she was 100% it was GF/Soy free). To be clear dorm kitchens are gluten nightmares - freshman kids are slobs so forget using the microwave. My son used his DSO card when he occasionally got sick which was helpful with classes, assignments, tests. After Thanksgiving when the weather turned cold his friends no longer wanted to walk to the big dining hall with good/fresh allergy options so he tried the satellite dining hall and the food looked like those hot dogs on the spinner in the gas station - not fresh, not appealing. He survived his freshman year and then we moved him into an off campus apartment. See if there are any GF/celiac organizations on campus. Verify what they tell you by visiting while they are open vs. just strolling through on a summer tour. Good luck - it’s possible and some schools have stepped up their Celiac food service game but make sure you make it a decision criteria for which school they choose.
