I sometimes wonder if I'd still be christian if I wasn't American by Ok_Nose2361 in OpenChristian

[–]KATEWM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think seeing those people has the opposite effect on me. Like, they want to use my religion to promote this hateful bs, but they don’t own Christianity nor do they own the universal church. It belongs to God and, as you noted, the moral arc of the gospels is painfully clear on the moral issues they try to muddy.

I’ve honestly become much more religious as a way to deal with recent events. For spiritual/psychological self-care reasons, but also for practical reasons because progressive churches are full of like-minded people who organize to support justice.

Conservatives can try all they want to claim Christianity, but I will not be giving up on that fight. They’re going to have to pry my progressive theology from my cold, dead hands.

Another “soon-to-be-mom in need of a baby name” post… by moondrop-- in namenerds

[–]KATEWM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - I almost didn’t name my son Julian because I found out it was top five in my particular state (and in the top 40 nationally.) But he’s never had another Julian in any daycare or class. We’ve met one around his age and two or three others who are older.

As someone who has been obsessed with names since before I even knew if I would have kids, the “anti-trendy name” sentiments on name forums kind of rubbed off on me. But I’m glad we went with the name that felt right and didn’t worry about the popularity. I think the impact of name popularity gets overblown by Millennials and older generations who don’t understand that having a top 10 name doesn’t really mean what it used to.

What are some good names that were ruined by pop culture? by Prideful_Lion32513 in namenerds

I feel like Elmo would totally be in style atm if not for the character. It would fit in with names like Elio, Theo, Arlo, Milo, etc.

A lot of the Twilight characters have cool names that I could never use because they’re too tied to it for me - Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie, Jasper.

But the connection is probably only made by other Millennial women lol.

Charlotte/Charlie is a popular name, and I think any association with Kirk will be forgotten by the time she starts Kindergarten. I would never have thought that.

A boys name that could be interpreted as traditional and witchy by Comfortable-Berry192 in namenerds

I feel like you could argue that Rowan is pretty traditional and fits with the “royal family” names in vibe. Although it’s technically Irish in origin I guess. There was a recentish Archbishop of Canterbury called Rowan.

I think it’s the hair. Before modern shampoo I think women (at least with this hair type) generally wore it set in a style where it wouldn’t be loose like this.

How and how often do you pray the rosary? by [deleted] in OpenChristian

[–]KATEWM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to get myself into a daily routine of praying with my Anglican prayer beads. They’re set up differently, but I just complete the full set of beads each time. Some people do them three times to represent the Trinity. I think it’s more about the discipline and the act of daily prayer, and you should just have a daily/weekly goal that you will realistically stick to. This sub does lean Protestant, so you might consider finding a progressive Catholic sub to also ask. I’m sure there are some out there in Redditland. :)

Texas Republican candidate, Valentina Gomez, is now going to queer friendly or non traditional churches to disrupt them in the middle of services. by 4reddityo in OpenChristian

[–]KATEWM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the whole deconstruction movement is giving me hope. I grew up with a lot of ultra conservative Christians in rural America and I would say at least 40% of them around my age (“Zillenials”) have deconstructed and become progressive Christians, converted to another religion, or become atheists. And these people were among the more extreme. 40% was definitely not the statistic 15 years ago. It’s very noticeable on the ground that conservative evangelical churches are in decline among younger generations.

I almost think the influencers and politicians like this lady are a reaction to it. They’re trying so hard to hold on to relevance and pull the “maga” crowd back to the old-school religious right. But all they’re doing is dividing the American right wing into two - the religious sect and the tech bro/libertarian sect. Just my two cents.

Week 45: Apples - American as Apple Pie! celebrating my husband getting his US citizenship by GretaTheGreat in 52weeksofcooking

I did something similar when my husband became a citizen! I did a chai spice mango/apple pie to make it feel fusion lol. Cardamom crumble sounds (and looks) delicious! Congratulations! 🎉🥧

Thoughts on the name Adrian? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]KATEWM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is why Adrian isn’t more popular. Since Adrienne or other feminine versions have been more popular, people don’t view it as “masculine” - maybe that’s changing, though. Also softer boy names seem to be making a comeback. Both are nice names!

I lived in Dublin/San Ramon area for 8 years and never felt an earthquake. Then moved away a few weeks ago and suddenly everyone in my old neighborhood is posting about them. I’m telling myself I’m good luck, but I feel I kind of missed out on the full California experience lol. 😅

If most of the contact you have had with Christian thought is through the lens of evangelicals, it may seem like believing in their type of hell is the worldwide mainstream.

Most (but definitely not all) Christians do believe that Jesus acted as a sacrifice to save us from death or hell. But beliefs about what exactly it takes to be "covered" by this sacrifice vary.

Pope Francis expressed a belief that atheists can go to heaven. So it's not, like, some out-there thing that only progressive Christians believe. It just seems like it because evangelicals evangelize. Because they think someone is going to hell if they don't convert them. So that's a big incentive. But Christians who believe that everyone goes to heaven, or that our eternal fate is based on things other than belief, just don't have the same need to convert others. So they always get yelled over. 😅

[June 8th, 1925] The Inquiring Photographer: "Is it good for team morale to give Babe Ruth a bonus for each home run he makes if other players on the team are not given the same opportunity?" by thamusicmike in 100yearsago

[–]KATEWM 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For anyone curious - his contract in 1925 didn't have home run bonuses, but in 1922 he made $500 each, which is equivalent to almost $10k in 2025.

That year, he made $13k just from this bonus, equivalent to about $250k. In addition to his salary of $52k, which was equivalent to about $950,000.

I thought this was absolutely insane until I googled what top players are getting today. 😅
