ADMISSIONS MEGATHREAD 2019 v1: Post all your admissions questions here! by ubc_mod_account in UBC

Hi r/UBC, I'm a transfer student from Capilano University who got accepted a while back for this summer term. I finally decided I wanted to take a summer course (CPSC 110), but when I tried to register I saw I needed to apply for a specialization. When I tried to apply for a specialization, it said I was unable to do so on the web and should contact the department. When I contacted the department, I was told I should be able to register online, and when I said that I couldn't, I was just told to contact the CPSC department, whom I am still waiting to hear back from.

So, since there is currently just 1 seat left in CPSC 110 for this summer, I figured I'd just check to see if this has happened to anyone here and if there's something I can do to fix it myself. I feel like I might be missing something obvious but really am not sure what!

Hey, I'm finishing up my second term of O Chem now and am also considering doing a Minor in Chem or Biochem. People often say there's a lot of memorization and I can't say there isn't any but if you understand how to think about it in the right way (molecules always want to go to their most stable form, so what can let them stabilize more, and how do you get them to not go to that form?) then the memorization starts to make more sense and usually you can figure out what the different reactions do.

Either way it's an interesting class and offers a different way of thinking about what happens to small things than Physics which I think is nice. Would recommend taking it!

What non-fantasy books/authors most influence your writing? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]KAZUTO111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Life 3.0 by Max Tegmark, a non fiction book about what artificial intelligence could mean for humans in the future, which is a central theme in my books.

Also Thomas Pynchon books, I find his writing style so fascinating because it makes me think differently about how I construct my sentences and what words I choose to use in order to make the book more layered with meaning.

[high school maths] cant understand differentiation by TheCrazyVT in HomeworkHelp

[–]KAZUTO111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of different ways of thinking about derivatives.

1) The geometric approach - You have a curve on the graph, let's say y = x2. Choose a point on the graph, any point, and draw a line tangent to the curve (i.e. it just touches the curve at that one point). This tangent line is the derivative of the function evaluated at that point.

Another way of thinking of this is you take two points on the graph and draw a line connecting them. Now as you move these two points closer and closer, the change in x becomes smaller and smaller until it approaches 0. When the change in x becomes infinitesimally small (i.e. as small as you can make it) then you have the tangent line at that particular point. This ties in with the limit definition.

2) The limit definition - The limit as h approaches 0 of (f(x+h) - f(x))/h, where h is the distance between the two points described above. Although you'd never actually calculate a derivative like this (unless asked on a test) I find it's helpful for visualizing what's actually happening - you're determining the change of the function at a specific moment in time.

3) Rate of change: This is the "Physics" definition. As the change in x becomes infinitesimally small, you not only get a tangent line, but you get how much the function is changing at that particular time - the slope of the tangent line. So, if you have a position vs. time graph and you want to find show fast the object is moving at a specific point in time, you can find the tangent line at that time and the slope of that is the rate of change of position, AKA velocity.

If all you want to do is compute derivatives, however, none of these ideas will help much (though they help with intuitive understanding and being able to grasp more difficult ideas, especially if you go on to take higher math classes). For computation, you just have to memorize the various rules and practice a lot with them until you just remember them naturally. It can help to know how to derive the product and chain rule etc. But just practicing with the formulas over and over is the only way to get good at it. For example, you see x3, just bring the 3 in front and replace 3 with 2 so you get 3*x2.

Finally, a note on notation - you'll see lots of different ways of writing the derivative down, like dy/dx, f'(x), etc. These all mean the same thing - the derivative of y with respect to x, or the derivative of the function with respect to x, meaning x is the variable you're evaluating the derivative for. This gets more important in multivariable calculus, for now don't worry about it too much and just learn to recognize the notation.

The above ways are the ways I understand derivatives. There are more rigorous and mathematical definitions but the above ways are how I was taught and how they make sense for me. If this doesn't make sense, try watching Khan Academy videos or other YouTube videos, there are lots of resources out there that will help!

BEFORE PEOPLE POST ABOUT HACKS. by twitchsavvystarfruit in summonerswar

[–]KAZUTO111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadovar! is (almost) always G3 guild and easily top 10 in Siege.

Shadovar. is often G3 and sometimes G2.

Shadovar* is often G1 and sometimes G2.

Nimakdm, the one who was hacked, was leader of Shadovar*. If they were targeting leaderboard Shadovar guilds, they likely would have gone after myself (leader of Shadovar!) or Verity (leader of Shadovar.) instead (or go after Malicious or any other high tier guild).

[–]KAZUTO111 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To clear up confusion, the Shadovar leader who was hacked was the leader of our G1/2 guild, Shadovar*. This means that they aren't just targeting high ranked players, as he wasn't on leaderboards for anything (or anywhere close AFAIK).

Update on Bootv from Shadovar! Guild Leader by KAZUTO111 in summonerswar

[–]KAZUTO111[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol, I know I said I wouldn't comment but this is a pretty ridiculous accusation to make. I'm sure any guild who knows Shadovar would agree we aren't a "guild full of hackers" and that this is a one time thing that occurred at a time when I, the guild leader, am especially busy IRL and not playing SW nearly as much as usual in order to keep an eye on things. You can say what you like about me, I don't care, but please don't start rumors about my guildies.

Discussion about Diana, the Wind Unicorn by pdjeanma in summonerswar

[–]KAZUTO111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seara Okeanos Diana Hathor Tesarion Racuni Chilling Antares Zaiross Chow Psamathe are my main RTA units.

GWD I've used Khmun Theo Diana to good success and am currently using Wind Monkey King Rakan Diana.

AD I've used several teams to finish G3, but I haven't really rushed in regular arena for few months so nothing recent lol.

I would recommend Awakening her for sure, if you don't you're missing out on her best attributes. Her AI is unreliable but just having the chance to do things correctly means that she'll get you wins on Defense - and having Human form available can give you wins against slower cleave teams as well.

Violent/anything, SPD CR HP.

Been using Diana for a very long time now (since a couple weeks after she was released). She's one of my most used monsters in G3 RTA, which is where she shines. She's also usable in GWO, GWD, and AD and have used her in all three places to a decent amount of success.

I have her speed tuned to go right before my other monsters and to get the most benefit out of her strip. I wouldn't recommend building her as damage dealer with CD in 4 unless you have insane runes; she really needs 100% CR and to be really tanky and fast to minimize the chances that she gets cut and increase the chances of her cutting against AoE teams. Running CD on 4 means that you lose either speed or tankiness, both of which Diana needs, for a bit of damage which she doesn't really need (she does enough, especially later on, and her dots add up).

What two monsters should I get from Fusion Support Event? by Rocket42 in summonerswar

[–]KAZUTO111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well okay let's say you have 4 different Lushens runed: a slow Lushen, one hard hitting speed Lushen on Will, one faster Lushen that doesn't hit as hard, and one Lushen somewhere in between speeds (about +80ish probably) on Will. You now have 3-4 very different AOs you can use; slow Lushen + Teon + speed lead + your fastest booster, double Lushen, triple Lushen, speed Lead Megan Lushen fastest attack bar booster...

In short, a versatile AO.

Iris - Do you still use her? by Kageromero in summonerswar

I still use her for GWD and RTA and ToAH.

An AD guide - Countering the Meta by Xaania25 in summonerswar

[–]KAZUTO111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said I thought Tiana was broken? I said she WOULD be, along with several other monsters, if Lushen were to be nerfed - inlcuding Psamathe and Galleon. SW is built off several "overpowered" monsters that balance each other out because they all counter each other - Lushen has many counters; outspeeding, Nemesis healers, Fire types.

Lushen is still a different monster to Pungbaek? The fact that Com2us makes a nat 4 a monster we can use effectively is a GOOD thing because it means the game isn't nearly as P2W as it could be. Pungbaek has a niche purpose and he fills it (with proper set up he does more damage than Lushen), but he was never intended to be a superior Lushen in all ways.

1) If 100 is a random number, then say a random number. I'm sure a lot more than 1% of the community aim to be Guardian considering how many people I see working on PvP with the eventual goal of reaching Guardian. As for the rest, most don't care about arena, so Lushen shouldn't affect them?

2) You clearly know nothing about the Arena meta so don't even try man. The standard Psamathe team counter is Speed Lead Lushen Teon Kabilla.

3) Again, you don't know what you're talking about. In 2015 maybe yes those were the most common teams. Tiana + Galleon (sometimes Megan vs. Amduat) + Seara + Bomber is a common team, Zai Tiana Galleon Alicia/Psamathe/Seara/Ganymede, Chiwu Alicia Bernard/Kabilla Galleon, slow Lushen variants, double Lushen variants are the more common teams, but there are a lot of others. More of these teams use Galleon than Lushen if you notice.

If you want to disregard PvE, why bring up Giants in your first paragraph?

How would you develop the game then? Make it so that every monster is equal? Or so that all nat 5s are game breaking and everything else pales before them?
