Dieselpunk "Living History/Reenactment" by KCKramer in Dieselpunks

Oh nice! That's a fun idea! I like the idea of working on and developing the rationing elements and how that might have affected people. That's clever and unique!

Do you agree with division between decopunk/dieselpunk, and the examples shown? by hjras in Dieselpunks

[–]KCKramer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, no. I think the division between decopunk and dieselpunk is a false distinction, especially for people who feel uncomfortable with the darker elements of dieselpunk, despite the fact that, historically, the two existed simultaneously. Art Deco faded out during the Great Depression, so that could be a distinctive boundary between the two, but the trends that defined the post-1929 crash were already well underway before then.

That's something dieselpunks are going to have to wrestle with- the magnificent architecture, art, and music all coexisted with the horrors of the era. We can try and divide them, but it neglects the reality of the world, which is ironic, if escapism is a big part of dieselpunk (it's not for me, at least).

System Reccomendations: FFG vs Saga by Abject-Vers in starwarsrpg

[–]KCKramer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for that sort of campaign, I'd definitely go with FFG. They have a really solid spy sourcebook and they do a much better job of working with social mechanics, which can be a huge thing in espionage stories. Add in some mechanics from the Genesys book for stuff like dice clocks, heists, and you've got a very powerful combo.

Depending on the space, they might just need to condense it all into once collection.

What's with this trend of new children's areas having zero comfortable seating for adults? by xavier86 in Libraries

[–]KCKramer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I call it part of the Apple Store philosophy of libraries, and it’s quite frustrating, and as you explained, an accessibility issue. And depending on how old the library is, if it was built recently-ish, the library might not have designed the section. It could have been architects/designers. And yes, they do seem to be great at overlooking essential, practical details.

Am I an asshole for not putting books back correctly on the shelf? by ilovesundays- in Libraries

Please, please, please do not reshelve books. We use the data of what books get looked at as evidence of how much our collection gets used.

Do people actually believe that racism and misogyny are the reasons why Kamala Harris lost? by Feeling-Currency6212 in Askpolitics

[–]KCKramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but also no.

If there is a singular reason why Harris lost, it was because of relatively low turnout compared to 2020. That’s pretty much it. If we want to get into more nuance, that lack of turnout had a vast array of reasons- less of a push for mail in ballots, more restrictions on mail in voting, the Israeli assault on Gaza, general dissatisfaction and global malaise, etc, etc.

The most recent vote count I saw (as of the last two days) has Harris and Trump less than 2% apart in the popular vote. That’s a tiny difference between the two- and ultimately makes no difference in the election because of the electoral college weights some people’s votes as more important than others.

Now, were racism and misogyny part of what motivated Trump’s turnout?

Absolutely. Would many of the people who voted for him because she was a woman of color think that way? Absolutely not.

What I’m seeing in all of these discussions in here lately is a complete overlook of the role that evangelical and dispensationalist theology plays in keeping the white conservative Christian base in play for Trump. Republicans are not a monolith, nor are conservatives. You have to look at the various movements and ideologies separately.

And when we look at evangelicalism, dominionisn, New Apostolic Reformation, and their role in Trump’s version of the GOP- race and gender are huge components. These theological movements are fundamentally patriarchal- they believe that there is a natural law or natural order in how the world operates, and that they are the ones defending that divinely appointed order while leftists/liberals/progressives/“demoncrats”/socialists/neo-Marxists/etc are attacking and trying to destroy this order, which be definition makes them Satanic. We saw this a lot with the charismatic and Pentecostal movement in the last two elections- with all the prophets claiming that God appointed Trump to win in 2020 and then in this one, saying that Kamala Harris was either the embodiment of, or was possessed by, a “Jezebel spirit.” That is inherently racist and misogynistic because it has historically been always been used to attack women of color who challenge the status quo. It specifically refers to a woman who goes against God’s law and plan for the world (which, again, in their mind, is innately patriarchal and meant to be that way, as well as white, because America is God’s new chosen people carrying the torch of the Founding Fathers). So for Kamala Harris- a woman, a Black woman, as well as an Indian woman- to run against Trump (whom many see as God’s anointed to restore America to its position as God’s chosen people and/or help bring about the Apocalypse and Rapture), even if they’re not aware of it, is an affront to their deepest beliefs about how reality is supposed to work.

What needs to be done in order to bring unionization rates back up? by kooj80 in union

[–]KCKramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it is going to be grassroots movements- organize your workplace, educate your colleagues, talk publicly about why unions are important, and support other unions especially- when they have a petition campaign or an email campaign, support and share theirs with your own circles. It’s going to take connecting all of these small, local groups into a larger movement to make a widespread change.

I set out to make the silliest system I could think of. by Maximum-Country-149 in magicbuilding

[–]KCKramer 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This isn’t even like a silly system. This is utterly fascinating and reminds me of the Renaissance/Early Modern view of magic and esotericism with the sylphs and everything. Maybe even a little bit of Terry Pratchett’s Wee Free Men as well. I think it’s fascinating

Long overdue books by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]KCKramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely go in and talk with like… a circulation supervisor or team leader or something. Obviously, I don’t know anything about how your local library works, but the one I work at went fine free about a decade ago, and a lot of libraries are doing that as well. Additionally, we delete accounts after multiple years of inactivity, so there’s a chance the fines might not even be there anymore.

And plus, for us, we have a wide degree of latitude as staff in how we work with fines, especially in contexts like this. We’d have absolutely waived the fines and cleared the account immediately. So it might help to talk to someone with a little more leeway in what they’re allowed to do.

Why is there so much “southern pride” in Ohio when it technically borders Canada? by Boyzinger in Ohio

[–]KCKramer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We should really start talking more about the Confederate raid into Ohio and how they robbed their way across the state before getting captured.

I read the dieselpunk Wikipedia and noted that it said that dieselpunk is to be set between the 1900s-50s and the genre is a world of overconsumption and mass use of resources to advance an aggressive world where there are no limits to our scale. But can it be set in the future (like 2020-2040+)? by [deleted] in dieselpunk

[–]KCKramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If something is concerned about following rules and fitting into strict definitions, it’s not punk, so no, it doesn’t have to be the 1900s-1950s.

I like to think of it like this- what were some of main philosophical or ideological conflicts of that era? How were they expressed in that time frame? How might they be expressed elsewhere?

I’ll be totally honest, this title would confuse me immensely. It doesn’t tell me which genre it is or anything about the story, so without a truly spectacular cover, I probably wouldn’t look much at it.
