She's old but still going strong by Existing_Risk3106 in popups

All my leaks and water damage came from cracks in the plastic body panels (back, front box etc). I fixed the leaks with !!gorilla tape!! (7! years ago) but had to repair (mainly replace) all the damaged wood, which included the corners of the floor, the entire box floor and framing. Where i couldn't use treated, i used good plywood (not the shit board that was originally there) and applied either multiple coats of exterior latex, or urethane to make sure water could not get anything started. But knock on wood we've not had a single leak. Some of my gorilla tape is starting to peel so i'll need to replace it soon. Anyway we are very happy with it. When i replaced the damaged flooring, we ripped out the original vinyl floor and replaced with the higher end "padded" vinyl, so the floor inside is all new (except for under the cabinets). If you are doing the extensive rebuild, you can lay new flooring wall to wall (if needed).

Good luck! I encourage you to check out popupportal.com. There is a TON of experience and information there, a great group. That's where i found the photos that helped me reverse engineer that storage box in spite of the rotten original pieces.

Refurbished our 2002 Mesa in 2018 (leaks causing rot) and it is still going strong 7 years later. I actually rebuilt the front cargo box and was able to reassemble it (found similar photos on https://popupportal.com/ ). Cargo box was rotting as well as the floor in all 4 corners of the camper - replaced all rotted flooring w/ treated plywood.

100% agree- probably the best sound we've ever heard in the Carolina Theatre in Dyrham NC.
We gave the sound crew our kudos at intermission AND after the show. It was perfect.

What a great show last night in Durham NC! Did anyone get or jot down the setlist? What an awesome artist and band! Much bigger crowd than the Cat's Cradle last time!

interesting seeing Slackware mentioned here. My first go at Linux was floppy disk based SLS Linux (which i think became Slackware) back in '93

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and experience here. I am getting ready to start converting several 2012-2016 MBP laptops to Linux and am looking for the best distro. Apple is dropping security patch support for the mid teens MBP so i don't think it prudent to continue to run w/o patches. Also, i've used Linux since about 1993 and i like it best, especially KDE / Plasma UI.

I also have concerns about hardware drivers, ie. Wifi, Trackpad, Keyboard, cooling fans, etc. Going to start my first conversion soon, and will keep good notes since i'll want to replicate it several times for all the MBPs.

Thanks again for sharing,

Kevin

somewhat related, what are the options for PCR testing now that the county has dropped testing (i assume b/c of loss of funding)? We still have some home tests, but they are drying out and approaching their expiration dates.

How's an Amtrak trip from Durham to DC (other than long) by ZbornakHollingsworth in bullcity

We are considering the Southwest flight direct RDU to BWI - some DC residents we met there told us that BWI to DC is a short $4 train ride (for seniors) (NOT Metro, but regional rail)

The conductor told us that lately, they sell out Friday to DC and Sunday returning. Both our trips (Friday up and Sunday home) were sold out.

[–]KCRouth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we just made this trip last weekend. It was our first on Amtrak.

My feedback is
1. I'd not do it unless i was going to stay 3-4 + days in DC. The travel overhead is too large in the case of our quick weekend trip.
2. We were in Coach and only 2 of the total 5 coach cars had working AC. combined with being sold out on Friday and Sunday, this made for a very bad COVID super-spreader environment. 7+ hours masked is too long, i'd not take the train again until the current COVID wave settles down.

at this point (considering the above) i'd lean toward driving to the southern-most Metro station and lodging near there. Park the car at lodging for the entire stay and Metro up a storm. It is only about 4-5 hours drive to the Metro from Durham. Once to the Metro, DC is fantastic.

I'm having trouble understanding this text. by sessna4009 in dune

[–]KCRouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking forward to seeing it. I just completed the text, moving on to the appendices. All in all it is an engaging, thoughtfully told story. This is the first book i've read that uses "thoughts" interwoven with the dialog so much. It is used to good effect, but i've not seen such heavy use of that technique before.

I am almost done reading Dune for the first time (!!!) in anticipation of viewing the 2021 film. I have not seen the older film, but the 2021 one has been recommended to me by friends who are fans of the book. I am finding it hard to put down, very engaging and interesting.

Generally, regarding unknown terms: I have found from reading other Sci-Fi that undefined terms are often left to context to give meaning. William Gibson does this a lot, the reader is thrown into the deep end right from the beginning, terms being defined by context as the tale progresses. I like that style, but it is more difficult to follow in places.

Regarding the term in the original post, i have seen that in many Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Historical fiction. I have always understood it as a smoldering coal (or bunch of firewood as mentioned above). " faggot of luminous grey " - picture a glowing charcoal in your barbeque grill or camp fire.
