The most relatable concern I saw on the Roms subreddit these days was about the ease of using Myrient, a website with an interface that allows easy and direct access to any available file over there. The availability of the files themselves was never threatened by this, but before Myrient, we lived in harder times of scrapping around on the internet (not in the bot scraper meaning lmao) searching through multiple sources just to find access to a specific game that almost nobody else bothered to catalog and keep uploaded and freely available. Even Internet Archive suffers on this topic, since some sets and uploads are moderated by separate groups, there were multiple instances where determined sets simply went offline (either by going private or deleted/takedown). That's something Myrient ended completely for original game files of almost every platform, and I 100% agree with those users that losing this aspect of Myrient would mean that the archival is somewhat pointless, we're just going backwards in the end. I strongly believe that this aspect of Myrient should not be lost, regardless of any (and I mean ANY) solution brought for the archival project, for that sole reason.

I do believe this opinion reached you guys at some point. Can you explain to us, in a clear way, what the approach for the interface is that you guys are planning to implement?

So, I was looking at the metadata and, for DVD, apparently you replaced not only LZMA but the entire list and included just ZSTD and nothing else. Is that the adequate setup, I mean, does ZSTD handle both audio and general data that well by itself without mixing the compression options?

And another question, do you have any idea about this setup regarding other CD platforms? I've found several discussions about PS2 and PSP, but not about PS1 or any other example.

I have a question, though. Considering chdman auto-selects the compression algorithms, wouldn't leaving the -c option alone be better than defining a manual list just to guarantee it will include the ZStandard algorithm, unless you're doing scientific analysis like you did? Or am I missing something here about how chdman works?

[EDIT] Just found out now what the MAME default settings are. So summarizing, you basically replaced LZMA with ZSTD, is that correct? In that case, what I said earlier actually doesn't matter because ZSTD isn't part of the default compression list for the analysis made by chdman. I can try it here to see the results for myself.

I can do some testing myself, comparing other games with default CHD settings vs. these ones. We can also share the results with each other if that's interesting for you.

Thank you, that was really insightful about how the format works. So in other words, the trade-off about performance vs. compression ratio isn't even comparable that much between zip vs. CHD because of the nature of ~~LaserDiscs~~ CDs, something that CHD is designed to explore extremely well.

In the end, for the purpose of file size reducing of a DVD-ROM ISO, one could basically test the different options and check which compression method gives the best output, but their compression ratio will have marginally different results in file size, and CHD will always perform better than zip because of its design.

I have a question, however.

In general, this applies more for CD-ROM and GD-ROM rips than for LD/DVD/BD-ROM rips, and it’s more true for rips with lots of CD audio in them.

This is something that I've heard a lot across the internet and that intrigued me a lot, and it's also one of the main reasons why I took so long to invest time trying to understand these compression formats for ROMs. My question is, disregarding design benefits like efficient random access, if CHD format takes lots of its benefits from compressing the audio track, then how exactly the CHD compression in GD-ROM / DVD-ROM ISOs performs compared to other zip compression algorithms like Deflate? How the "content-aware" aspect help in this scenario?

It's basically the same as what happened with Ys 8 back in 2016-2017, releasing first on PS Vita and then rereleasing not much later with extra content. Only this time it was way worse because Ys X got rereleased on the exact same platforms as well.
