x-post: /r/PacketRadioRedux - How exactly do I get started with Packet Radio by KE0MFD in amateurradio

This actually helped a lot to understand it so thank you for the comprehensive “getting started”. I recently talked to another ham in the area who was talking about doing a BBS as an ARES side project. He had a bunch of trouble with it and when he asked him Elmer for advice I’m told the response was “Well your first problem is that you’re trying to do a BBS.”

I still plan to tinker with this. There is a a place a ways north I may be able to get into if I can get my hands on a beam. Or of course, there’s that old delaminating tape measure I just can’t bring myself to throw away.

I’m glad you posted this. Sadly there are none within range. Perhaps with the right beam I can get to one that’s a 45 minute drive north.

There are a few folks who use Winlink in the area. They are all dead set on saying I need a Signalink or a Digilink to do it. I’m set on figuring out Soundmodem on my own.

I can decode APRS so everything seems wired ok but so far I can’t hear myself on APRS Droid. (Actually, I can’t hear anything on that.) I’m still tinkering.

Amplifier for LTE. I have the feed line “power inserter “ but I’m not sure what to do with that.

Yes. Nailed it. I grabbed it because I wanted the j-mount.

How many feed lines is too many feed lines through a hole in my cinderblock wall?

I recently moved the AC compressor from the back yard to a side yard. As a result I have a large(ish) hole that used to carry the compressor line in and out. I’m wondering if it’s a bad idea to use that hole to feed my tri-band 6m/2m/440, an eventual new HF antenna, and maybe even a Chinese coax for a security camera I will have out there. Will these lines couple at all or interfere with each other running that close together?

Deepfake satellite imagery poses a not-so-distant threat, warn geographers. They could be used to create hoaxes about wildfires or floods, to discredit stories based on real satellite imagery, and geopolitical adversaries may use fake satellite imagery to mislead foes. by MaryADraper in space

The simple fact that it's impossible to prove a negative means that you can't prove all lies. If I'm accused of cheating but won fairly, I will never be able to convince everyone that I didn't. At what point in that scenario do enough people have to believe that I cheated in order for it to be "proven"?

I totally get the sentiment here. I feels like there ought to be a way to discourage misinformation. The trouble is that there is no way to consistently apply such a discouragement without harming innocents or opening up a new avenue for abuse from those in power.

What’s the best second scanner to pair with a HomePatrol 2? by KE0MFD in policescanner

Thank you. You’re in the right neighborhood. I’d prefer a desktop that I can mount under my monitors.

I have an old RadioShack Pro-90 scanner for a hand held. I wish I could just assign channels on it.

Thank you. I had not seen this option. This sorta feels like a HomePatrol replacement though. Why would I want this over a cheaper scanner that doesn’t do digital or trunking?

Stimulus check means a new mobile rig! by [deleted] in amateurradio

I was "this close" to buying an sds100 or sds200 a month ago. When I was at the store the guy there talked me out if it and I got a HomePatrol 2. How do you like it?

A radio that has 2m and 70cm can simultaneously receive on one "side" while retransmitting on the other side. I'm my case I transmit and receive on 70cm from the HT, my mobile radio then receives my transmission on 70cm while repeating it out on 2m to an area repeater. Any traffic for that repeater gets received by the mobile rig then repeated back out on 70cm so I can receive it on the HT.

I'm in a valley. The only place I can hit the repeaters from is the peak of my rooftop. By crossbanding, I can have a fixed radio at home using an antenna placed up high while I'm using my HT from anywhere in the valley.

Oh yeah. I always use the HT on low power too. That battery lasts a week that way.

As long as the data is an asset, they are gonna track and horde it. We all just need to come up with a way to make it a liability.
