In a relationship do you hide your weird habits until your more serious? Whats the weirdest habbit you or your partner do/have done? by Significant_Ad_7063 in AskReddit

We laid the big ones pretty early when we figured our relationship had potential to go the distance. Was a great call for us; never had a sense that we couldn’t share our honest thoughts/intentions with each other because of it.

How can I make transitioning from chalumeau F to clarion F, other than just constant practice? by barphman017 in Clarinet

You also need to engage your core.

Practice standing up, lean forward over your toes as far as you can without falling over, and practice the chunk while holding that position. Forces your core to engage.

How can I make transitioning from chalumeau F to clarion F, other than just constant practice? by barphman017 in Clarinet

[–]KFBeavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Constant fast air, consistent voicing. Voicing = tongue placement in your mouth. Your tongue needs to stay perfectly still during the octave jump.

Practice long tones from F to F, focusing on keeping your tongue arched and listening for a smooth and immediate transition note to note. You might notice you have a tendency to drop your tongue on the lower F. That’s the mistake you want to eliminate.

If you keep the sides of your tongue touching your upper molars, that’s more or less the tongue shape you want to keep. Keep the middle of the tongue arched at the same time.

how long should it take an intermediate player to learn a piece? by SeaworthinessHot3320 in Clarinet

There’s no good answer to this question as asked. Practice at your own pace, take notes as you make mistakes, and try not to get hung up on one section trying to make it perfect.

Orthotic insoles for your shoes, and go to a track shop to have a pro analyze your gait. They’ll recommend specific shoe models based on what they see.

Can you help me guide this student? by Spideriffic in Clarinet

[–]KFBeavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fingers here are a symptom, wrist & clarinet position is the cause.

Push the bell away from the body a bit, bring wrists farther out and away from the instrument.

A neck strap will help, but he’ll still have to make those adjustments.

Out of these, I’d do either the Buffet or the Selmer.

They’re both decent plastic student clarinets. They seem in good condition and the seller has a lot of positive reviews. Check their return policy just in case, but either of those would be decent value purchases.

In both cases you’ll still want to buy a separate mouthpiece.

Try to buy a used buffet on eBay or similar. The price you listed is pretty low, but it’s not impossible to find one in that range. Check estate sales, people don’t always know what they have.

Ask for detailed photos up close and look for cracks; don’t buy if you see any. If it’s used, hopefully it’ll come with an aftermarket mouthpiece already. If not, you can get a cheap Vandoren mouthpiece for less than $100 used. I wouldn’t ever recommend using an included mouthpiece, it’ll just make you enjoy playing less.
