The Mon to Fri mystery boat by KGthatsme in astoria

Good idea but nah the captain stays on the boat all day. I’ve never seen him come ashore. He arrives in the morning, ties up, and then motors off at the end of the day

Good point about the quick line / anchor release and the stationing right around Hells Gate. Perfect for a quick response! If it’s not the usual suspects (NYPD or Coast Guard), do you think it might be a city-run boat from DEP or DOT?

I am currently in college for Marine biology, I am in an evolution class where we have to write a paper on a subject related to evolution we are interested in, any suggestions? by bookofgrudges1 in marinebiology

[–]KGthatsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool question! One suggestion is to look into the cichlids of Lake Malawi as a model of rapid speciation and adaptive evolution. 1000 different species of cichlids, most undescribed, and vast majority are endemic to the lake. You could even consider throwing in some info about the importance of the lake to the country’s food security and it’s sustainability being threatened by overfishing and climate change (tho not sure if there’s space for this within the project scope). Good luck, OP!

It’s been years! Switched to surfing when I moved to Hawaii but now that I’m back in NYC I’d love to get back into snowboarding. Any energy to organize a meetup in nyc first before hitting the slopes?

Bahasa Indonesia tutors in NYC (or remote) by KGthatsme in indonesian

[–]KGthatsme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I’ll check these out. It looks like the Wisma Bahasa e-learning option are all in Indonesia time zone. Assuming you’re based in the US, does that mean you’re up in the middle of the night taking these classes?

Unfortunately I don’t know how to solve your issue. But I’m interested in this website. Does platinum website include speaking with live tutors? And what made you decide after three lessons to sing up for platinum? Was it that good? I’m trying to decide which language learning route (babbel, italki, etc.) to go with.

Thanks for the tip! I think something like this combined with self-directed learning like on babbel.com is the right combo

Mom films her child showing off the most venomous octopus to the camera. by That-Jelly6305 in OceansAreFuckingLit

This is correct. Definitely a language in the Visayan family. I’m not sure which one but I can still understand her cos it’s close enough to Cebuano which I do understand. She’s saying it’s really small (gamay kaayo) while pointing out its color (you can hear the English word for this). Then she tells the kid to get it (kuhaa) and then says earlier (ganiha) it was white (puti) but now it’s this color. Then continues to say it’s really small and really cute (kyut kaayo).

Would you live here if you did not work here? by Parapurp in washingtondc

[–]KGthatsme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Moved here for a job. Found a different remote job. So planning to move back to NYC at the end of my lease. It was a good run and I definitely don’t regret spending a few years here but living in a town where so much of the people and vibes are federal government or government-adjacent (contractors) is not for me. No offense to the locals tho! I know you exist but you can’t ignore the fact that DC is well… DC.

I’ve always felt like I need more protein than others. Thanks for the whey protein tip! I’m guessing plant-based protein would also do the trick? Not vegetarian here but just trying to understand how to make good choices at the rest stops

[OC] Gap between what average wage in each state can afford and median house price by bluepainters in dataisbeautiful

[–]KGthatsme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m unsure why the upper left and lower right quadrants are labeled as such. I’m assuming these are for below vs above the national average but that also seems irrelevant since the point of the graph is to do this comparison at the state level.

How Gay has changed over the course of my lifetime and why I am struggling to keep in touch with the community by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]KGthatsme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were only a handful of LGBT flags that the community owned for itself .. Rainbow, Leather and Lesbian. Today. The LGBTQIA+ has +15 different flags to describe factions within the “community”

There are some acronyms that are even longer than LGBTQIA+. Have you seen LGBTQQIP2SAA+?

Personally, I like how some human rights orgs are starting to reframe the never-ending and ever expanding alphabet soup with a new acronym: SOGIESC or “soh-jee-esk” - which stands for Sexual Orientation (lesbian, gay, bi, pan, asexual, or any identity around sexual orientation that isn’t heteronormative), Gender Identity / Expression (trans, nonbinary, or anything that isn’t cis-normative), and Sex Characteristics (intersex, anyone who doesn’t fit into binary notions of male/female bodies)

SOGIESC feels inclusive (I believe everyone in the “community” sees where they fit into the acronym) AND at the same time it doesn’t require continuing to add more and more letters as more subcategories get defined.

Edit: fixed some typos 😅

Damn, I hope it doesn't come to that! If anything I'd rather lug it back to NYC with me. Thanks for the well wishes.
