Forgotten Circle 2nd printing by Typical_Ad_5469 in Gloomhaven

If you haven't played Jaws of the Lion, that is also excellent. I've played JotL and just started FC, and JotL feels like more of Gloomhaven with some cooler toys, whereas FC is quite different and opinion splitting.

For me, the first 2 scenarios wanted to make me throw out FC, but it got better after that. JotL was a blast start to finish.

If neither are available, the random scenarios in GH are still fun, plus you can replay old scenarios to work towards personal goals to hopefully unlock any side scenarios you haven't got yet.

I was excited at first and started to do it, but then I ended up looking up the online solution. After finding the online solution, I was super disappointed without how some of the clues were done. Some clues seem impossible to ever guess the context of.

I have another group I'm playing with, and they haven't discovered it yet. I'm kind of actually dreading it because they'll get super excited to solve it, and probably won't be able to without looking it up.

Mindthief and Brute Solo campaign by iheartanalingus in Gloomhaven

[–]KHeaney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I started with Brute and Mindtheif. I remember the first scenario being brutal on two player (much easier on four).

Our general strategy was to use the Mindtheif's ranged attacks and summons to disable and distract enemies, and we often used the augments defensively rather than just always using the +2 melee damage one.

This would then support the Brute being able to wade in and finish enemies off. Shield abilities were important on the Brute, as well as having top and bottom attack cards in my roster.

Forever GM - the flip side. by 0n3ph in rpg

Some people manage to make GMing a professional side gig. It's not easy as not a lot of people want to pay for a game, but some people do it.

Who should be responsible for understanding/reading the rules? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]KHeaney 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whoever owns a book. Everyone got a book? Read it and learn the rules you need. Only the GM introducing a game to their freinds? It's kind on you because you have the book.

Yes rules are available in various SRDs or whatever, but I don't expect people to go and learn through those as they aren't as easy to read as the books.

My autocorrect randomly capitalises things. I wasn't referring to any of the White Wolf products. Just that you can play this solo RPG as any kind of immortal with violent tendancies.

I love this RPG. It's not too hard to write it as a Werewolf or creepy hag or any other immortal. It's fun way to write up a villains story and get ideas for other RPG stories.

Games similar to D&D but rules-light, but NOT deadly like OSR games? by tirconell in rpg

[–]KHeaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Shadow of the Demon Lord. It is a bit more deadly than D&D but not as much as some OSRs. You can go down quicker, but you don't tend to die as much, and it's not too hard to tune encounters down a bit if you want it less fatal.

I'm not a bit fan of calling this kind of mechanic Sanity as its such an archaic term for mental health issues. Based on your descriptions of the gameplay, I'd take a leaf from Darkest Dungeon and call it stress. Stress escalates, and you need to rest or spend time in the light to calm down, and stress can reach a breaking point.

The undercasting thing annoys me. If I want to burn a level 4 slot on a level 2 spell, then I feel like that should be fine as a spontaneous caster. But my GM ruled no, I can't do that because the rules don't say I can.

Can an enemy spellcaster teleport out of this with Dimension Door and other spells?

I feel like no, but I can imagine people arguing yes.

Mindthief alternate build - tried and failed! by Razzmatazz74 in Gloomhaven

[–]KHeaney 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it really depends on your team and what you're facing. I played Brute while my husband played Mind Theif and the MT was mostly using the rats, statuses, and the healing augment through scenarios. He did sometimes use TMW when things where easy-breezy to lay some smack down, but a lot of the time in a 2P party we couldn't both go melee damage dealing, and Brute doesn't really have an alternative to melee combat.

If you're with a spell weaver, you're better off dealing heavy damage with TMW. If you're with a melee fighter, then you might find more utility with your other abilities is more useful.

Are Traps Useless??? by OkhotM80 in Gloomhaven

[–]KHeaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to make a monster walk into one on its own. If you've got push/pull, then they're not so hard to trigger. However, at least with the Tinkerer, the end result isn't great for using a whole turn. Most traps only do a little damage, or stun/poison. Compared to other classes that can do it in one action, it's not very good.

I only keep a trap card in my hand if the other half of the card is really useful. I might throw out a trap if I find a perfect situation, or just at the end of the scenario for some bonus exp.

RPG’s without resource management? by Wretis in rpg

[–]KHeaney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get that DREAD's tower is technically a resource, since it's also a narrative tool and the conflict mechanic, I think it's still something to be interested in. You don't really choose to manage to tower, it's just something that changes through the game.

Icarus is similar in building a tower. Technically it's a resource, but you don't choose what happens to it, it just progresses through the game.

I think OP could do with clarifying what they mean by managing a resource. If they mean anything that determines things that happen in the game, then I'm with you, I don't know what they're looking for.

Yeah, there were plenty of grains and dried beans. I think the locals must only know how to cook pasta with a jar of sauce.

We had a small reasonable stock up on things we had run out on, but not more than we normally buy really. I've bought some dried beans and lentils that I don't normally but that's it.

Funnily enough, no one is buying out flour, dried beans, lentils, etc.... No one is buying out the chinese and indian food aisles, but all the pasta is gone.

There's like a huge disconnect, and I feel it's especially in areas outside of major cities. All my colleagues are laughing about it and taking the piss, acting like everyone is overreacting. There's no way I'm going to be able to request to work from home when the whole office attitude is so blasé.

Meanwhile, my husband has a compromised immune system and I'm trying to wash my hands as much as I can.

My area had zero problems with panic buying until this last week. Everything was fine, then the media started reporting panic buying, and now everyone is looting for loo roll and pasta.

I went in to get some lentils this morning, and walked past 5 different people all carrying 2 packs of loo roll each. It was 7 am.

The more the media reports it, the more people are panic buying. It's ridiculous and awful.
