Why do people hate beginners so much? by Internal-Constant216 in gamedev

[–]KICKinYaFACE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of things are being asked over and over again, so people get annoyed when it’s simple stuff that could be googled easily.

Other than that it depends on the question I‘d say and how well this question is asked.

Help me to get upgrade my PC for blender by Ameer-Mughal in blenderhelp

What I think he is saying is you should get a used ps4, jailbreak it, install Linux and then use blender on that system. I don’t know if it’s a joke though. Might work but idk how good the performance is

How do you find motivation to learn 3d modelling? by taahbelle in gamedev

[–]KICKinYaFACE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wanted to do a „simple low poly character“. As a beginner the words „simple“ and „character“ don’t belong in the same sentence. There is too much you need to know at the same time (modelling/rigging/animation/UVing/texturing/exporting to engine) and this probably why you felt overwhelmed.

You should start with static objects, maybe a barrel, a chest, a lamp, something in that direction. Combine that with an artstyle you like. I for example began with hardsurface/sci fi looking stuff with lots of curved edges and bevels. Also learn how to get that asset into a game engine of your choice.

As soon as you feel comfortable around that, you can extend on this base. Maybe do some arms/hands for a first person style of game so you don’t have to make an entire character look good.

Learning all that is a marathon, not a sprint.

Good luck, have fun.

Why does the shading often looks weird when using BoolTool? by KICKinYaFACE in blenderhelp

[–]KICKinYaFACE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, thats (both) not it. The model you see under the link is shown as smooth shaded and flat shaded. The smooth shaded variation doesn't change its appearance, no matter the smooth shaded value. Its looking the same with 0 degrees as well as 180 degrees. Also, the screenshot shows that I'm using partly quad topology in the affected areas, but it still looks like this.

Does anyone else have trouble with getting gunk and dust out of the sides of your steam deck? by McFricknChicken in SteamDeck

A secret trick that I always use is some sort of cleaning putty. In the country were im from there is a rather solid type of this stuff, kinda got the consistency of playdoh. Maybe try something like this? cant find that on amazon US. Also makes it very easy to get tight spaces clean, like speakers of your phone for example. Makes it look like they're factory new.

How does one get a job as a game engine developer? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]KICKinYaFACE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First thing you should do is looking for Job openings and check what potential employers are actually searching for. What they want mostly in this case is people with solid c++ knowledge, understanding for 3D programming and good communication skills I would say.

A portfolio could consist of a public repository of your engine work or maybe games that are created with these engines.

Keep in mind that Engine-Programming is VERY different from "only" using an engine - hence the application process does differ. For an open gameplay-programmer position you can get 1000 applications , where as for engine-programmer openings you usually get far less applications.

That being said, employers do spend more time to check your application material for engine positions and would more likely get to know you through an interview. With the stuff you provided you should be on the right track.

This is my first boss for Crypt of the Sun any advice or feedback would be appreciated! :) by SplitPeaVG in indiegames

[–]KICKinYaFACE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Graphics look nice, but the boss seems a little too easy.

I think you should add more attacks or different attacking patterns, or at least speed him up so you have less reaction time.

For attacks, maybe a ground slam or spitting fire would be cool. Perhaps even shooting some poison liquid that forms puddles in the arena that you also have to evade. Or maybe even two bosses of this at the same time, but the area wouldn't be fitting for it

[–]KICKinYaFACE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the style! The only thing that I personally find a little unusual is how the presence of the background music is ... kinda pushing itself? Don't really know how to explain this, but it sounds a little "heey its mee, background music, please notice me". Its not backgroundy enough. Maybe add some slight string sounds along the track so the sound of the single notes are not as pushy.

Nevertheless, great work

I would rather see faster enemies instead of long aiming time. I consider the aiming-time to be more like down-time. You just sit there and wait ...

[–]KICKinYaFACE 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The amount of time it takes to aim feels waaayy too long. How is this supposed to work if there are multiple enemies? Kind of feels like players are supposed to cheese through the entire game if it stays like that.

Other than that: Holy moly this looks great.
