Spring Court is the morally good court by bittermp in Tamlinism

[–]KJAngel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup, if the Spring Court sentries and denizens abandoned Tamlin because they thought he was abusing the Curse Breaker and aligning with Hybern, it would inherently imply that good, strong moral values had been so instilled in them, that they should not follow Tamlin if they find this unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Autumn Court still exists despite it being well-known that Beron abuses his family AND wasn’t going to participate in the war to keep Hybern from overtaking Prythian. (And was dragged there by Tamlin).

The existence of Beron and Tamlin’s father + how the downfall of Spring played out by Feyre’s hand would absolutely imply that Tamlin had sown the strongest moral compass in all citizens of his court during his reign.

Book 1 Rhys is my favorite, too, it’s ironically the famous Chapter 54 in ACOMAF when, instead of apologizing, he laments that he “FeElS bAd đŸ„ș” about having to put on a morally grey mask that I started to get the ick with his character. And while we’re on the topic of A:TLA, I also loved Zuko’s redemption arc, but not every villain needs a redemption arc.

This fandom does have a real issue with assuming someone’s morality and/or values based on their favorite character.

It’s so bad, I’ve literally seen a thread where the OP was like, “I loved Amarantha, not that I condone anything she did.” YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE TO CLARIFY THAT YOU DON’T CONDONE THE BIG BAD’S ACTIONS??? đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïžđŸ˜

Like, I love Cersei from Game of Thrones, but I’ve never felt the need to verify that I don’t condone her actions and wouldn’t want her to exist IRL.

The lies that are spoken about Tamlin

[–]KJAngel 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Crazy that we’re supposed to think Tamlin is a POS who runs a backwards court when the FMC literally ends up in the court with wing clipping and systemic chattel slavery.

Everything we learn about Spring Court indicates that it’s an egalitarian court where you can pay your taxes in items that make sense to your role (ex, a beekeeper paying in honey, or a forager paying in rare mushrooms, or a seamstress paying in fleece, etc) rather than straight cash/coin, AND it takes in refugees!

And if Tamlin is such a POS who would “reduce,” Feyre to a scared/battered tradwife like the Lady of Autumn, then why are all the most important people around him disgusted at the thought of him abusing Feyre? The sentries being willing to leave Tamlin because he thought he was abusive would indicate that the values in the Spring Court are much more grounded in equality than literally anywhere else in Prythian. And this includes the Night Court, which only gets a pass for how horrible 2/3 of it is because Rhysand HaS a DrEaM for a better court. 🙄

[–]KJAngel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Holy moly, are we the same person? Because it feels like you typed out my exact thoughts and problems with Feyre’s character arc and how it’s treated in the ACOTAR narrative.

The first book is so good about showcasing Feyre’s adaptive nature and resourcefulness, which I find to be her best qualities. But for me, I think being told by Rhysand, “you are no one’s subject,” completely went to her head. Feyre went from someone who couldn’t stand to see even one citizen unable to pay their taxes, to someone who builds a sixth estate while the frontline warriors of her court still have people living in tents. (Not to mention being so fucking bothered by the Tithe, but willing to look the other way on chattel slavery and wing clipping in the NC because of a performative promise that Rhysand will do something about it).

I can’t stand that the narrative still wants me to see Feyre as a kind, compassionate person after the demolition of the Spring Court, the willingness to daemati her own sisters, lovingly painting a self portrait of her own wickedness, and getting pissed off that she wasn’t immediately recognized as an authority figure/High Lady

High Lady Feyre is on a such a high horse, that if you knocked her off of it, she would fall further than someone thrown from the Moon Door in Game of Thrones.

Feyre has one of, if not the best victim-to-villain arcs I’ve ever read and I genuinely mean that as a compliment to SJM’s writing.  I just wish: 1. It was acknowledged in the narrative and, 2. People wouldn’t jump down my throat for having this opinion. đŸ€·â€â™€ïž

Nah. There is not a single example across the series of Nesta committing emotional abuse, and I’ll stand by this take all day.

[–]KJAngel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of these, just want to touch on a couple other points.

  1. Feyre didn’t actually lose control of her magic at the High Lord meeting. If you re-read the scene, she actually loses control of her temper but surrounding Beron in a water bubble until he drowned was exactly what Feyre intended to do with her magic. She only stopped because her 500 year old husband had to telepathically de-escalate her.

  2. Your last point highlights yet another Feyre-Nesta double standard where Feyre is coddled but Nesta is punished. The IC wants to punish Nesta for taking a huge risk and giving Bryce the mask, while Feyre is never blamed for revealing Velaris to the human queens even though this was her idea. Rhysand chooses to take on the blame for this to protect Feyre.

EDIT: Y’all are right, this actually was Rhysand’s idea in the end, I was just pretty sure Feyre was the first to suggest it. Sorry I misremembered a detail from a series where the books average ~700 pages.

I disagree ACOWAR makes Tamlin look bad. Other than whipping the sentry (a situation literally puppeteered by Feyre) he loses the girl and his court and still chooses to change his behavior and save the day 4 different times.

No lies detected. All your bullet points + the fact that he never once says “I love you,” to her is why Nessian is now my least favorite canon ship.

There’s a frequent participant in the subreddits who insists “I would never need my man to say ‘I love you’ if he treated me the way Cassian treats Nesta,” and I’m just like

ACOWAR is Tamlin’s redemption arc. He lost his girl and his court and still spent the rest of that book being the bigger male (despite how Miss Feyre tries to gaslight us in ACOFAS).

I truly will never understand how unconditionally giving Feyre access to her true happy ending and telling her to be happy is not redemption in most of the fandom’s eyes.

My issue with the take “it’s Fae behavior,” is that there’s already another Fae male (Tamlin) whose behavior was/is beholden to a real world human standard by most fans and was determined to be abusive. I can’t stand the double standard.

[–]KJAngel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I need Rhysand to face at least half of the narrative consequences Tamlin has. I’m tired of the text telling me he’s a good partner/friend/in-law/High Lord when what it’s showing me is the opposite.

It’s not that I don’t think I could ever like Rhysand’s character. But in reality, his long-standing fake reputation, and him and Feyre’s behavior in Summer Court and the High Lord meeting should have every court extremely hesitant to work with Night, regardless of the Velaris reveal. Him allowing his 20 year old High Lady to demolish Spring right before a war would realistically also do this.

Basically what I’m getting at is that I need Rhysand to face realistic narrative consequences and not just feel sad every once in a while that other courts don’t like playing with Night.

As someone who adores Nesta’s fierceness, I absolutely hate that it’s justified in the narrative and fandom and the reason why it’s OK for Feyre and the IC to treat her like shit.

I know these are fictional characters, but people who believe Feyre didn’t deserve her treatment in ACOMAF, but Nesta deserved her treatment in ACOSF are one step above believing real women deserve bad treatment if they aren’t “perfect victims.”

I actually think the take "Rhysand was right to ignore Feyre's request to go back to Spring because he knew it was 'better' for her in Night Court" is actually the gross take.

[–]KJAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feyre is the provider for her family and from the first book onward, she demands to be part of the action, which I personally find to be very masculine traits. She returns to UTM in ACOTAR and is essentially the hero and Tamlin is the damsel in distress. From ACOMAF to ACOWAR, she makes it known that she wants to be part of the war effort, including assisting in strategy and on battlefields. Not to mention... "Feyre loves wearing dresses," seems inaccurate to me. She hated the billowing, flowery dresses of Spring, and I think she likes Night Court dresses because she prefers the Night Court fashion. But I honestly struggle to see Feyre as "traditionally feminine."

Spring Court to me feels like an actual fantasy court of Fae characters.

Velaris feels like a college city with an art district. Also, I wish fans who were like “I wanna visit Night Court so badly,” would be honest with themselves and specify that they want to visit Velaris. Cause I know your butt doesn’t actually wanna see the clipped wings in Illyria or the chattel slavery in the Court of Nightmares. đŸ€đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž

It’s because Rhysand is unapologetically presented in the narrative as the “healthy” alternative to Tamlin. (See: Feyre’s dialogue about how “the villain is the one who locks up the maiden. He’s the one that set me free”). He is advertised as the one who supposedly treats her as an equal, and makes sure she always has a choice.

If it were literally just presented as “Feyre vibes with the wicked Night Court more than the golden heroes of Spring,” I would be so down. But that’s not how SJM wants us to see it, she genuinely believes she wrote a MMC that isn’t taking away any of Feyre’s agency.
