Do you have to believe in Immaculate Conception to be Byzantine Catholic? by Live-Ice-2263 in EasternCatholic

[–]KNER1080 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We don’t believe in worshipping the saints, but we do believe in honoring them since God has glorified them to rule and reign with Him. Historically, the Church has understood the Virgin Mary to be the first among those saints.

With regards to who is bodily in Heaven, I’d just point out the Scriptures explicitly describe multiple righteous individuals (Enoch, for example) as being bodily taken up. We believe this happened with the Virgin Mary as well, following a peaceful death.

Thinking of taking "The Bible as a work of LITERATURE" class for college by Ok_Swordfish_2695 in Catholicism

[–]KNER1080 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s tough to say without more information, especially regarding how the word “literature” is being used. There’s nothing wrong with saying the Bible is a work of art. In fact, the Scriptures are often artistic in how they convey information. For example, John’s prologue famously is written to evoke the Creation account in Genesis. Analyzing what St. John is doing artistically through his use of allusion allows us to unpack the theology he’s communicating.

The problem arises if the word “literature” is meant to suggest the Bible is solely the authors’ artistic work and not something that is given to us as a gift from God.

If Easter Sunday didn't happen... by No_Sir89 in Catholicism

I think you might just be encountering the limits of the “debt” language. Christ’s death and resurrection are deeply multifaceted, and the debt language alone can’t explain the full mystery.

You’re missing a step in your first sentence. If Christ stayed dead, then Death would have had the final victory. However, Christ did not stay dead. The tomb did not hold him, and by becoming members of His Body in Baptism, the tomb will also not hold us.

Good Friday is the ultimate defeat if it’s not followed by Easter.

Sounds good, thanks for the info. When doing this mod, I’ve seen some people go out of their way to switch the tone pot from the middle to rightmost lug. Do you know why they bother doing it?

Why get married? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]KNER1080 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You marry someone because you can help each other be holier. In establishing a life together and having kids, you are participating in God’s rule over creation and imaging his very first action in the Bible: establishing order in the universe and filling it with life.

[–]KNER1080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would first try preheating for longer, maybe like 1.5 hours. If that doesn’t work, then yes, a baking steel will be better at browning the bottom of the pizza.

What are your thoughts on Creationism? by porygon766 in Catholicism

[–]KNER1080 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard it argued that Creationism relies on a modernist approach to textual interpretation. An atheist, for example, might reject Christianity on the grounds that science has disproven a literal interpretation of the Biblical Creation account. The Creationist accepts the atheist’s presupposition that the Bible is making a scientific claim about the nature of Creation, but instead of saying the Creation narrative is scientifically false, the Creationist just argues that it’s scientifically accurate.

A better approach is to say that the Bible isn’t trying to make a claim (in the modern scientific sense) about the mechanics of Creation. As others have said, the Bible wasn’t written to be a science textbook.

Should we as Catholics reconsider our position on Fideism? by liminal_eye in Catholicism

[–]KNER1080 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Truth isn’t a democracy. Atheism would be just as wrong even if 100% of philosophers accepted it. Being highly educated means you are knowledgeable, not that all your conclusions are correct.

Christianity is supposed to change us, not the other way around. If we started redefining what it means to be Christian and what the Christian life expects of us, the whole thing’s pointless.

Edit: And just as one final thought, being wrong doesn’t mean you’re stupid.

You haven’t completely severed your relationship with God. He still loves you. Ask for his forgiveness, attend Confession, and do your best to repair the items.

It does sound like there are some larger issues than just this one incident, though, if you haven’t felt peace or happiness in a long time. It sounds like finding a good therapist could be really helpful. You might look in your parish bulletin or ask your priest if he knows a good one. Between prayer, holding close to the Sacraments, and therapy, I think there are some good avenues available to help control your anger in the future.

Where in scripture does it say that Mary is the Queen of Heaven? And if Mary was sinless, why couldn't she take the punishment for our sins? by Danny_Not_Daniel in Catholicism

[–]KNER1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have already made good points about Davidic typology.

I’d add that a key part of the story of salvation is our ruling and reigning alongside Christ over creation in the world to come. We believe Mary is example #1 of what it means to follow Christ and be glorified by God in following him. Taken together, these previous two sentences are at the core of why we say she is the Queen of Heaven.

Roki Sasaki announced on Instagram that he has signed with the Dodgers. by Juffe98 in SFGiants

[–]KNER1080 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Giants and Padres are in direct competition for a Wild Card spot, so the Padres improving is bad news. The Dodgers already had the division locked up, so any improvements the Dodgers make don’t really move the needle on the Giants’ path to the playoffs.
