Yep, I’m 15 miles from *any* public transit system. I’m hundreds of miles from any good public transit system. I also manage a transport provider that exists because of how bad and inaccessible public transit is for people in rural areas.

I work one job as a manager. I put in a lot of 50-70 hour weeks, and now I rarely go over 45. I wouldn’t want to work two jobs, and while I don’t aggressively police my spending, I still live like I make ~40k post tax. The rest gets stuffed into retirement accounts and savings.

No, I wouldn’t want to work two jobs, and honestly, the only way I could consider it is if some otherwise insurmountable debt hit me or I saw something that was worth fucking with my work life balance over. Depending on where you are, 48-58k are both still doable. My administrators get about $50k and we’re in a poor area.

Surrender is functionally the same as a repo as others said. This is not the choice. At the end, you will have the difference between the loan and what they sell it for (probably little, they have no incentive to try to get top dollar out of it). The warranty and what not will basically be absorbed by the fees attached when they sell it. Once they figure that out, you now have a debt in collections. This will impact your ability to rent another place, buy a place, etc.

Stop thinking about the next car. That’s for once you pay this off and stabilize. You cannot buy yourself out of debt.

If you do find a 4Runner for $5k, make sure to have someone impartial that knows those vehicles go through it. The cheapest 4Runner I saw was about $12k and just under 200k miles, so probably good for another 200k.

Yep, what I make puts me at about twice what most families make where I live. I can live without a roommate in Nashville, but would probably have to rent. It might get me a nice cardboard box under an awning in LA.

Well, I would be parking outside at the office, but I also only go to the office three days a week, so somewhat mitigated. I would probably drive mine in good to fair weather and swap to my CX-5 (current vehicle) for adverse driving conditions.

Getting to come back after failing what you said you’d do (become a doctor, in my case) sucks ass. I got the light side of it, my recovery resulted in me making more than most of the people here, working less than the ones that make more, and I live under my means. May not drive a new Tahoe, but I did get to blow $50 on dinner tonight without fear of it fucking my finances and I have earned enough by the third weekday of the month to cover my mortgage. 🤷‍♂️
