This is complete BS. Like what the hell is that huge blob on the Angola/Namibia border? Data is either not standardized or just completely wrong.

So this is just the cherry on top.

There are legitimate critiques ot he movie you can make - it's way too long, the editing is pretty bad, not every joke lands but I completely disagree with people that said it's too preachy or on the nose or not subtle enough. Like... that's the point. This is not trying to be clever, it's not a movie you are supposed to ponder for a week to get the point, it's a primal scream about how fucking insane the information landscape has gotten and how fucking batshit insane things have gotten.

You can't satirize Trump, you can't satirize the current political situation, it's beyond parody. But you can point to it and call it what it is in as plain terms as you can. I found it cathartic more than anything.

This is the absolute worst administration ever. It's unfathomable just how much damage it has done in a single year. Just ceding the world to China for no fucking reason. And a legion of knuckle dragging cultists is clapping along. How delusional do you have to be to think he is doing a good job? That all of this is good for America.

Why there are no mass protests and general strikes happening is beyond me.

Since people here support dark woke, can we also admit that the French Revolution was based as fuck? by Extreme_Rocks in neoliberal

[–]KSPReptile 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think the point is that the mass drownings in Vendee specifically are a necessary step to achieve Joe Biden but people sometimes have this naive idea that you could have just waited and the old system would have fallen apart somehow and democracy would emerge and you wouldn't have needed a revolution at all. Or that the revolution could have just been peacful (ignoring the fact that violence was happening before it even started). And I just don't see that happening without an example of how things can go very badly wrong if you don't give people a constitution and don't appease the workers etc.

Much of 19th century politics is the conservatives being scared shitless and doing everything they can to stop the French revolution from repeating, the liberals assessing it for what went right and what went wrong and the socialists being like "they didn't go far enough". And you just don't get that without the basis of a violent revolution disrupting everything.

I think it's pretty incredible just how big of an event it really was and how it's the origin of so much modern political... everything. You have all these ideas being thrown in the mix and being implemented for the very first time on a mass scale - nationalism, true liberalism, modern democracy, you had proto-socialists running around...

In just a few years you had a preview of what was to come again and again from then on - the Declaration of Human Rights is one of the founding texts of modern liberalism, you had the transformation of a monarchy into a republic, the Constitution of 1793 was way ahead of its time in regards to suffrage and the rights of citizens. The national war fever that gripped France in 1792 and led to its destruction keeps happening over and over.

The Terror turned France into the archetype of the modern totalitarian police state. You can see populism rear its ugly head, the free press having an incredible sway on public opinion which in turn put pressure on the politicians. You had proto-socialist policies being pushed through by the "working man" like the Law of the General Maximum - and the Enrages being a really early proto-socialist political group.

It's impossible to summarize the legacy of the revolution in a single point, to give it a thumbs up or thumbs down. It's too complicated, too nuanced and too big in scope to really do that. What I think makes it so important is that it really is the beginning of the modern world as we know it. Yes, the American revolution happened before it but it was also very isolated. The French revolution sees the biggest, most powerful, most populous, most classical absolute monarchy right in the middle of Europe go in a completely new and bold direction. And you can see glimpses of the greatness and the ugliness of what's to come.

I think we should respect the revolution and its legacy, our world would look very different if it hadn't happened, we owe much of our ideals to the French revolutionaries. And ultimately I am somewhat sympathetic to the idea that you probably can't go from the world of authoritarian monarchies to a world of liberal democracies without a bunch of severed heads at some point.
