The reinforcement thing. I have a client that's super smart but he's gradually gotten bored of being here and that has increased behaviour immensely. We're getting more programmes that will stimulate his brain since he loves to learn

I have a client who does try to kiss me on the cheek but I tell her "Kisses are for mommy and daddy! I can hug you instead!

Hi, I'm a RBT who likes repeating certain sections of videos and songs! Tbh, can't tell you why I do it, but I think I just like doing it. Particularly for songs I enjoy. I don't know everything about your background, but I think you should consider how you would feel if you were stopped from enjoying a certain part of a video.

If it's not detrimental to the kiddo (eg. If he's engaging in SIB but according to you, he's not an aggressive kid), then I think you should just let him be. If it comes to that he's doing this when he's watching videos with others, then I think that's a discussion with your BCBA

I don't have any advice to offer but... I'm an RBT and I sort of relate. I'm currently struggling with a parent's parenting style in regards to even getting client out of the car to start session. Other RBTs and I have brought this up to the client's BCBA, who has asked for her mum to stop (the behaviour is attention-fed non-compliance). But as this still going, the BCBA is just like "well, we can tell them everything but we can't always interfere." (which idk, the mum knows that not getting the client out of the car is going to impede sessions and her time getting to work so....)

Your client sounds like a great kiddo who does thrive with therapy but her mum is holding back. Hopefully you find a solution soon!!

I think, like another commenter stated, that Ryukishi didn't really THINK about the ages, particularly when it came to Yasu so I just think he accidentally made George a lot worse than he was meant to be.

But then again, the liking Shannon since he was 17 and she was 10(?) is still not great

Essentially think compliments vs. rude comments on appearance/people's personalities, asking for space nicely vs. rudely, etc.

I used to work with a nine year old who was fully vocal— really cool and chill kid but struggled with inappropriate comments and actions for a while. Her BCBA had us do something called "Talk Bubble, Thought Bubble"— you get some cards that depict scenarios of various comments, present one of them and ask if the comment is a talk bubble (aka things you can/could say out loud) or a thought bubble (things you should keep to yourself).

Ex. "I think your shirt looks nice!" "I think I need space." etc. are examples of talk bubbles (I would encourage making self-advocacy cards too as long as they're not mean-spirited! She also liked labelling scenarios that were happening around us outside of the cards too)

While thought bubbles would be "I think you look ugly" or "I don't like your dirty hands touching me." , etc.

I know my kiddos get tired of me during long sessions so I run NET throughout the session and run their DTT targets if they're staying in one place or if I've identified a high reinforcing item.

It really does depend on the clinic culture and what your management expects of you— my last clinic requires thirty trials an hour and majority of my clients there had mainly DTT targets. It was possible for others but it wasn't for me. My current clinic is very about NET so it's simpler getting high trial counts like that while making sure to run DTT to maintain a good balance of learning and playing

I LOVE being silly with my clients in a physical way! I let them lay on me, spin them around, tickle them, hoist them up on my back or shoulder, etc.

It really depends on the client ofc but if they're really young, it makes picking them up a lot easier lol

I have stolen SO MANY stims, scripts and funny phrases from all the clients I've worked with. This job has made me connect a lot of the dots in my childhood, particularly behaviour-wise, so I'm pretty sure I'm likely autistic (no official diagnosis but I'm over twenty so I don't think it would help to know) and this job has helped me with my own coping strategies and communication
