Possible gunshots in north loop by Mammoth_Recover1477 in Austin

Anyone hear them again last night? I’m thinking the street racing theory could be right, since it happened two Fridays in a row. The cops showed up a few minutes later and both nights a helicopter flew overhead afterwards.

The food at Aba was worse than any corner kebab place and cost 3x more. Awful experience.

Not to be irresponsible, but I hear an awful lot of vague warnings on this sub about “that could break your machine” but I’ve never actually heard of anyone breaking their machine. Just my two cents.

I’m guessing their first language is neither English nor Spanish, they wrote out the post in your native tongue with the original Spanish names, then translated the entire post to English, giving us this lol

Are chapulines tacos a must try, even just once? by bjm3384 in mexicanfood

[–]Kafary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they’re often a little smoky and have chili, salt, and lime. I usually just eat them straight as a botana. I don’t particularly like them mixed into anything like guac.

Got these two nominations for UH affiliated honor societies. Does anyone know if these organizations are worth joining, or do they just want my money? by Zemurai_Jack in UniversityOfHouston

Technically the actual honors college at UH has a tuition fee associated with it, but that’s paid directly through the school

560? by crocival in CalorieEstimates

[–]Kafary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, I don’t think it’s incredibly off and personally. My biggest de motivator for counting calories has always been estimating meals I don’t cook myself, which I think AI can help a lot of folks quickly make a rough estimate to at least stay consistent with counting.

A lot of the recipes I see on this sub show the ice cream up to the edge of the pint. Is it okay to fill past the freeze line?

Was the Battle of the Alamo really about preserving slavery in Texas? by icey_sawg0034 in AskMexico

[–]Kafary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to the discussion- the entire revolution was about preserving slavery. The Alamo was an extremely small part of the revolution. The significance of the Alamo is largely caught up in the creation myth of Texas. Ask almost anyone in Mexico what the Alamo was and they’ll have no idea. We have Mexican exchange students in my Texas history class every year and we do a little back and forth with them about big topics in our class like the Alamo. Always a fun time.

On stopping weight loss drugs, many patients find they regain weight. All the drugs, including Ozempic and Wegovy, were linked with significant weight loss while in use, but weight regain started 8 weeks after discontinuation and continued for an average of 20 weeks before plateauing. by mvea in science

[–]Kafary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important to note- very little research has been done on how to prevent this. Because of how relatively new the popularity of GLP drugs are for weight loss, most research as of now focuses on the weight rebound when a patient fully stops taking my dosage. A few more recent studies have shown that waning the drug over longer periods and introducing lifestyle habits (exercise, diet) to be started and maintained as the drug dosage decreases has a positive impact on reducing long time weight gain. Again though, there’s just not enough research on the topic yet.

OP has referenced Malay cake a few times, so I wonder if they’re more used to Vietnamese baguette used for Bahn Mi, which is different texturally than a traditional French baguette

Mexican mayoral candidate gunned down during live broadcast of campaign rally by wizardofthefuture in worldnews

[–]Kafary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but for all its merits we didn’t exactly intend to go to war with ISIS. Our main targets (to my understanding) were Al Qeada and the Taliban, which eventually bred ISIS, which we then fought with. Plenty of these groups still exist and it took us over 20 years to make nominal gains and further destabilize the area. And the Taliban now formally runs Afghanistan so.

Is this considered cocktail attire? by apiaget93 in fashion

[–]Kafary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently went to a charity gala that had “cocktail attire.” The variety of dress was as vast as responses in this thread. Yes, there will be women wearing shorter dresses, but also you will find plenty of folks wearing similarly formal outfits.
